MERCY CORNER

The heart of the Gospel is mercy. The truth of the incarnation is that God sends His own into the world to save us. It's what St. Paul is talking about, magnified infinitely. It's what Jesus is talking about in terms of the heart of the Law is mercy. It's what Pope Francis has been talking about since day one in his papacy. Pope Francis isn't talking about: Let's throw out the rules of the Catholic Church. Let's throw out our dogma. That's not the point. The point is, the rules have to be applied with mer-cy. What Jesus is calling us to is this compassion and mercy; to see the other as our self. The great Saints are those who realize this: That the other is my brother...that the other is my sister. What's re-vealed through our Christian faith is that the heart of our faith is mercy...mercy...mercy. Let's pray that our own hearts might move to this deeper truth of what Jesus came to reveal.

September 1, 2019 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary

Time

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor,

the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will

you be because of their inability to repay you."

(Luke 14:13-14)

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving

without expecting something in return. Even when we

give to charity we often want something in return – a

raffle ticket, a dinner, a chance to play golf or our

name in print. Yet, as Christian stewards, we need to

remember that the true reward for our giving awaits

us in heaven.

Theme: Give as God gives - in humility and love.

Breaking Open the Word

Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel

Step One: Listen to the Word

As you listen to the reading today, what did you hear God

saying? What word or phrase touched your own heart and

is memorable for you?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: Jesus tells us that we should treat

everyone as a guest. Who do you tend to shun or not be

nice to?

Question for Youth: God asks us to do for others without

hope of repayment. This past week, what did you do for

someone else for which you won’t be repaid? Who are the

people most in need of your generosity?

Question for Adults: Who are the people living near you

that you would find it most difficult to invite to a meal in

your home? Or to invite to be part of your life?

CCD Registration Forms for the Fall, 2019

Weekly Reflection September 1, 2019

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

St. Francis of Assisi and his famous follower Claire are probably the

best known, but our own American ladies Elizabeth Ann Seton and

Katherine Drexel also make the list. “What list?” you ask. The list of

saints who were born into great wealth, but who deliberately chose to

live under vows of poverty. Underneath their decisions, their main bol-

ster of support was the often forgotten virtue of humility. In our brash

culture, often loudly touting an aggressive grab for fame and fortune,

humility is often equated with weakness or worse. It’s George Bailey

vs. Mr. Potter– both of whom we meet each Christmas as we watch “It’s

a Wonderful Life.”

Only a God who took on our nature and was born in a stable could ever

tell the parable He did at a banquet of the rich and famous of His

day. Ever the prophet, He did not cling to being the guest of honor but

instead He told the truth even at the risk of offending the other in-

vitees. Just as His advice on where to sit was likely not well-received

then, so it is now. And don’t we secretly still admire most of the limou-

sine riders of our day?

Now, about this elusive virtue called humility: what is its essence? The

word itself gives us a clue. It comes from the Latin “humus” meaning

“dirt.” A stark reminder of our penultimate origins, just before God’s

decision to create us. Humility is aligned with that Ash Wednesday

reminder, which is also helpful for the other 364. In this context of

having a humble heart, Jesus instructs His host on who to invite for his

next banquet. It turns out to be the very people whom the Jews and

Greeks of His time despised and avoided, and who were believed to be

banned from heaven: those who were “poor, crippled, lame and

blind.” Today we might call them “the marginalized.”

Note that those very types Jesus honors form a major component of our

present Holy Father Pope Francis’ agenda. He even made the papal

“almoner”, his representative caretaker of the poor, a cardinal of the

Church, to emphasize the new importance of this formerly forgotten

office at the Vatican. This is the cardinal who oversaw construction of

restrooms and shower facilities available near St. Peter’s square for the

homeless at the pope’s direction. The pope himself has turned his own

birthday celebrations into dinners where a number of Rome’s homeless

people are invited guests. Recently I read where this same cardinal

almoner jumped into a manhole to reconnect electric lines to a shelter

that had been cut off for not paying their bill. (The Vatican had picked

up the tab.)

Returning to the subject of humility. I’ve been happily surprised by

certain segments on mainstream news or magazine shows that have

featured stories of humble people willing to put others first. That is so

notably good to see. So the evidence is in: choosing to be humble is a

good way of life that inevitably leads to service of others. And service

of others is nothing less than the second part of Our Lord’s great com-

mandment. And obeying that command leads us to the doors of heaven

where Christ is there to welcome us. Admittedly, there are times when

God seems to intervene in our lives to teach us humility. We run into it,

so to speak, or it runs into us. My favorite example of this comes from

a story told by our late President George H. W. Bush. He was visiting

elderly patients in a nursing home one day. With the requisite Secret

Service for company, and hospital personnel all around, it must have

been a bit of a spectacle. One elderly occupant was in his room, seated

contentedly in his wheelchair when the president walked in, greeted

him, and then asked, “Do you know who I am?” With a clear voice the

old man replied, “No, but just ask the nurse and she can tell you.”

September 1, 2019 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)

The genius of St. Bernard expresses itself to the full in

his eighty-six Sermons on the Song of Songs. Nowhere

else does his spiritual doctrine and experience display

self with such depth, vitality and spontaneity as in these

conferences which are the fruit of is most mature years.

Bernard’s doctrine as found in the Sermons on the Song

of Songs can be said to be a synthesis of the whole of

his spiritual teaching. One passage sums up his entire

teaching: “What a great thing is love, provided always

that it returns to its origin; … flowing back again into

it’s source it acquires fresh strength to pour itself forth

once again.” (SSS83). These tow lines contain his en-

tire spiritual program: “To direct man’s love to God; to

restore with the help of God’s grace a twisted power

which clings duly to creatures, in order that once freed

it may find again the dignity of its origin.” Bernard

found in the Bible an inspired book, Solomon’s Song of

Songs, which depicts this drama of the soul’s relation

with God in terms of the love which unites a bride to

her bridegroom. This love was like a “spiritual mar-

riage,” which Bernard conceived as the love of the soul

for God. In this, of course, he was a predecessor of Te-

resa of Avila and John of the Cross. With the coming

of Christianity, the relations between God and Israel

had become the relations between Christ and His

Church. St. Paul had seen this union as the supernatu-

ral exemplar of the union between a husband and wife.

Catholic commentators have always held to this inter-

pretation. Human love is only a roughcast of true love,

the love of God for us and of a human soul for its God.

There is no truer love than God’s love for our souls and

the love of our souls for God. Bernard states: “Indeed,

I am convinced that if the invisible God has willed to

reveal Himself in the flesh, and to converse as a Man

with men, it was in order to win first of all for His flesh

and affections of carnal souls, that knew only how to

love the flesh, and lead them in this way, without their

realizing it, to spiritual love.” (SSS20). We can be cer-

tain that Bernard’s only ambition for his monks, as well

as for himself, was to lead them to this “spiritual love”.

For this is the supreme goal of all holiness, of every

Christian life, and therefore in a super eminent way of

the monastic life, whose ideal is the very ideal of the

Christian life.

to.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

AN OFFER OF HOSPITALITY

Jesus came to show us that God has a way of accept-

ing the humbled: the beggars, the crippled, the lame

and the blind. We, Jesus' disciples, are challenged to

identify the humbled in our own lives. Who do we

know who are begging for Truth, for Understanding,

for spiritual growth? Who are crippled because they

do not know Jesus? Who are lame because they do

not have a Faith Family to walk with them on their

spiritual journey? Who are blind because they cannot

see God? Jesus challenges each of us with a less-than-

polite message: We must offer our hospitality to the

humblest of persons, no matter how much we might

wish to avoid them. Invite someone you know who is

seeking spiritual growth to join us at an Inquiry Ses-

sion. Inquiry sessions DO NOT assume a commitment

to join the Catholic Faith family. Inquiry sessions are

opportunities to ask questions about God, Jesus, the

Catholic Faith. All who are unbaptized, baptized into

another faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but

have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, are invit-

ed. Inquiry sessions are for those who wish to inquire,

explore, and search for ways to grow in relationship

with God.
