I t’s a funny thing how year after year the High Holy

Days are always early or late, but they are never, “on time.” Of course, the truth is the High Holy Days are on time, it’s just we who might not be ready for them.

Like the young yeshivah student in a huff, rushing by his Talmud professor who is taking a long, leisurely walk.

“Where are you running to?” the professor asks the young man.

“I’m rushing home to look over the High Holy Day prayer book before I have to lead services at my congregation,” the student replies, trying to catch his breath.

“The prayer book hasn’t changed since last year,” says the old sage, “but perhaps you have. Slow down. Take a long walk. Then go home and look over yourself.”

Slow down. Take a long, quiet, careful look at yourself. That’s really what the High Holy Days are about.

Our tradition calls it cheshbone hanefesh—an accounting of our souls. That’s what our prayers are meant to accomplish; a long, quiet, careful look.

This year when you come to Temple, relax. Don’t worry so much about keeping up with the pages of the prayer book. If a prayer moves you, dwell on it a while. When you are sitting in the magnificent Sanctuary take the chip off your

shoulder, whether against God or other people, against Judaism, the Torah, the Temple, whatever.

Don’t worry about whether or not you are “enjoying” the services, if you are being inspired, moved or stimulated. Sit back and just let the words, the melodies, and your own imagination take hold of you. Let them wash over you and carry you away. And then, when you are truly ready, take a long, quiet, careful look….

The month of Elul begins on August 30. Once again, we are excited to bring our congregants

and friends the digital, “Daily Reflections of Elul.” Simply click the Elul link on our homepage or visit our Facebook or Twitter accounts any day of Elul to see the daily message and inspiration. Or read all of them on our website. Engage with us on Facebook and tell us what you think. Retweet our message to share Elul wisdom with your friends. Or simply enjoy reading a daily reflection. We hope you’ll read them and let us know what you think.

Surely this instruction which I enjoin upon you this day is not too baffling for you, nor is it beyond reach. It is not

in the heavens, that you should say, ‘who among us can go up to the heavens and impart it to us, that we may observe it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who among us can cross to the other side of the sea and get it for us and impart it to us that we may observe it.” No, the thing is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart to observe it.”

The Book of Deuteronomy in the Torah is set in the time immediately preceding Moses’ death. The Israelites anticipate entering the Promised Land; they are encamped at Moab, across the River Jordan. Moses is aware that death awaits him and conveys his final message, his hope, his

blessing to the assembled people.

After guiding the people for forty years even though the Israelites may not be ready, Moses is ready to let go. Although Moses will die, the Eternal’s instruction, guidance and blessings are not distant from the people. The key messages, values and hopes have been expressed; the essential resources are already in their hands. Moses faces his death with all his papers in order, acknowledging the upcoming transitions. He has even appointed Joshua as his successor.

May we learn to be so wise—to write and speak the truth of our hearts to our children, grandchildren, students and community at life’s key transitions. May the blessings that we have taught over decades be accessible, meaningful and eternal in your lives. With Moses we say, Amen, Amen.

Did you know that almost every home in South Korea has a translated Talmud? Not only that, but Korean mothers

read it to their children, and Talmud study is required as part of the Korean school curriculum. It’s true. While less and less Jews in the U.S. and Israel are studying the most influential book in the canon of Jewish writings, 50 million Koreans, who are mainly Christian and Buddhist, are embracing it!

“Jews have a high percentage of Nobel Laureates in all fields,” said South Korean Ambassador to Israel, Young Sam Ma. “This is a remarkable achievement. We tried to understand the secret of the Jewish people. How do they–more than any other nation–achieve such accomplishments? Why are Jews such geniuses? The conclusion we’ve reached is that they study Talmud. And we believe that if we teach our children Talmud, they too will become geniuses.”

We have a lot in common with the South Koreans. We both value education, family, and culture. But for some strange reason, we’ve stopped valuing Jewish learning whereas the Koreans seem to cherish it, and that doesn’t seem quite right. Have you ever studied Talmud? Or Torah? The Prophets? Jewish history or literature? This fall, we will be offering a series of Jewish courses where you can join friends and delve into 2,500 years of Jewish wisdom. I truly hope you will embrace this opportunity. After all, we have an obligation to uphold our reputation.

Brawerman Elementary School

In the Old West, schools began with the ringing of a school bell. At Brawerman we start the new school year in a way

that is meaningful to our Jewish traditions and values. Here, parents join their children in the classrooms to participate in the honey-aleph (the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet) ceremony—a Talmud inspired ritual where students taste the sweetness of honey along with the sweetness of learning, as they begin their studies.

This year, beginnings are especially sweet. We not only celebrate our Brawerman Elementary School bar mitzvah year, but also the opening of the new Brawerman East, at the historic Temple Campus. Outstanding educators are joining our staff, new programs are being implemented, and we are coming together focused and ready to begin.

We welcome new teachers and assistant teachers new to Brawerman. Teacher Amy Carson and assistant Rachel Utley will guide the Brawerman East kindergarten. Ariella Young is the newest Brawerman West kindergarten teacher. DeLeT Fellow Mia Pardo will work with the first grade. Teacher

Andrea Weinstein and assistant Betsy Gerstenzang join the third grade team. Nate Bankirer is our sixth grade assistant, and Ben Kamer will coach in the Physical Education Department.

With backpacks brimming with supplies, new shoes readied for running and old and new friends gathering together in classrooms, the theme for this school year, Yad B’Yad (Hand in Hand) is beautifully reflected in our opening tradition. We celebrate the burgeoning spirit of our community.

May it be a good and sweet beginning!

Picnic in the Sukkah with Us!

Goodbye... Hello... Thank You

The Mann Family and Erika J.Glazer Early Childhood Centers have a fun family tradition. We celebrate the

holiday of Sukkot by gathering under the sukkah that the children have elaboratly decorated. It is a lovely evening when families bring a picnic dinner and dessert is provided by our Parent Association. Music is an important part of our celebrations, as is the scent of the etrog, shaking the lulav and saying our blessings—truly an evening for all our senses. Sukkot is one of the three pilgrimage festivals; like Passover and Shavuot, Sukkot has a double meaning for us, both historical and agricultural. Historically, Sukkot commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters. Agriculturally, Sukkot is a harvest festival. Historians believe Sukkot may have inspired America’s favorite, “Turkey Day.” The pilgrims based their customs on the Bible; and learning that Sukkot was an autumn harvest festival, there is evidence that they fashioned the first Thanksgiving after the Jewish custom of celebrating the harvest.

We find that some families enjoy the evening in the sukkah so much, they build their own. You can buy a do-it-yourself sukkah from various sources online. It is immense fun for all the children, they love being part of the holiday. What could be more fun than to build a tent or fort for the whole family to observe the commandment, and eating a meal in the sukkah? Everyone can spend time decorating the sukkah and making it beautiful. Covering the top must be something that grew from the ground and was cut off, such as tree branches, corn stalks, bamboo reeds, sticks, or two-by-fours layed across the top allowing space to view the stars. This year, enjoy a fun and inspiring sukkot in our Temple sukkah and your own sukkah too.

A committee of the Temple Board,

the Camp Committee, is responsible for contributing to the success of our Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps by assisting in identifying and

fulfilling long-term strategic objectives for the Camps; acting as ambassadors in the community; supporting our fundraising efforts and participating in the development of camp policies and communication. Members of the Camp Committee serve on at least one subcommittee in addition to the Camp Committee at large.

At our July meeting we said goodbye and thank you to three members of the Camp Committee: camp parent Judy Zweig, and alumni Barbara Grushow and Jeff Kaplan. All

three have been long-time supporters and ambassadors for our camps, and we are grateful for their time and commitment.

At the same July meeting we welcomed two new members on to the Camp Committee, both of whom are camp alumni. As chair of our Master Plan committee, Alberto Valner brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his professional background in the building and construction industry. Howard Weinberg joins the Camp Committee after being extraordinarily helpful in our master planning process, bringing his expertise as a land-use attorney to the committee.

Chaired for the third year by Susan Adler Jannol, we are fortunate to have 20 members on our Camp Committee who are passionate advocates for our camps.

During services in the Magnin Sanctuary these High Holy Days, take special notice of your surroundings–the

sound of the audio system, the height of the bimah, the wear and tear on the carpets, the chipped paint, the faded colors, the heat, the tenting installed to catch the falling plaster from the 100 foot dome. It will be one final look at the Sanctuary of old, before its renewal and reopening in 2013. The day after Yom Kippur is the first day of the physical transformation that will restore, redevelop, and revitalize our beloved, historic Sanctuary and Temple Campus—fulfilling the dreams of our past and securing our future.

As construction begins, we will capture each moment with our hearts and our cameras. Look forward to monthly eblasts containing photos and updates. Through them you will witness our Temple transforming into a vital Jewish village for all of us in the heart of our City. We have already completed the demolition of the retail building along 6th Street to make way for a temporary parking lot, as well as the construction of new classrooms for the first kindergarten class at Brawerman Elementary School East. Watch us renew and grow with pride.
