    ING Orange Days of Giving

    As part of ING DIRECTs Orange Days of giving,

    Communities In Schools of Delaware received $20,000

    to provide teachers across the state with Teacher

    Appreciation Totes filled with school supplies for the

    new school year. On August 16th

    , more than 50 ING

    DIRECT associates assembled 1500 totes at the Orange

    Caf on Delaware Avenue in Wilmington. CIS staff

    then delivered and distributed the

    totes to their schools and severalothers with their districts.

    Microsoft Grand Opening Event

    On Saturday, September 29th

    , the CIS students attended the grand opening of t

    new Microsoft store in Christiana Mall where staff from Microsoft presented CIS

    President, Jim Purcell, with a check of $250,000 worth of software. Software

    donations were also given to one of our partners, Junior Achievement, and the

    YMCA. Senator Carper and Governor Markell were also in attendance.

    Back to School Events: Katie and Trish helped to welcome over 150 new families to McKean during the

    Freshman Orientation on August 22nd.

    Student Leaders helped welcome the freshmen to McKean during their first daschool by participating in activities that allowed for them to get to know each

    other.

    The CIS School Store is now open providing students with the necessary schoolsupplies to be successful!

    Spotlight On Service Learning McKeans Food Closet coming soon!

    Christine Evans from the Food Bank of Delaware came out to speak with Stude

    Leaders about the Food Bank and the services/programs that are offered on

    Tuesday, September 25th. The Student Leaders will then visit the Food Bank on

    Monday, October 15th to see in person how the organization operates before

    opening their own mini-food closet for McKean students and their families. In

    addition, the leaders are working with Healthcorps coordinator, Morgan Dorse

    for what foods they should be collecting and how to distribute well-balanced

    servings of food. The closet should be up and running by November 1st!

    Mentoring Works On Friday, September 21st Joyce

    Fangman from Creative Mentoring

    came to McKean to facilitate a

    workshop on mentoring to this years

    Student Leaders. She will return in

    the winter and spring for follow-up

    training sessions on how the Student

    Leaders can best serve the freshmen.

    Student SpotlightEdwin Zavala

    This is Edwins second year participating in CIS and has already been a stand-out stude

    among his peers. Edwin Zavala, senior represents McKean in 3 varsity sports,

    volunteering, Best Buddies, Student Leaders and the On Track program. Not only does

    commit most of his time to helping others, he also works almost every night to save

    money for college and help out his family.

    Edwin commented on his participation with Communities In Schools. He said, its fun

    get to volunteer with friends and spread my happiness. Ive become a better person bbeing involved, being a better leader. He is looking forward to volunteering, achieving

    better grades, applying for college and having fun the 2012-2013 school year.

    Community Partner SpotlighOn Wednesday, September 12th McKean High School held a Back-to-School Open Hous

    for students and their families. At this time, CIS coordinated a Family Resource Center

    the cafeteria for families to visit for information and assistance. Partners included: Fo

    Bank of Delaware, Contact Lifeline, DE Hospice, Goodwill, Delmarva Power.

    o Cancer Federation Drop-off donations accepted Saturday, October 27from 9:00 am to noon at McKean High School

    On Tuesday, October 16th 11th and 12th graders will be heading to JuniorAchievement to participate in a career readiness workshop by ING Direct.

    Beginning Friday, October 26th, juniors and seniors will be starting On Track 1 &a college readiness program, at Del Tech for an introduction to college life and

    receive a college credit.
