From the Church wardens:-

September is upon us. The children are back at school on Monday 6th

September, a number of children will be starting at their new schools

which must be daunting for some but exciting for others. We will

remember them in our prayers.

The Flower Festival ladies will be hard at work preparing the Church

for the Flower Festival weekend. Bryan and his helpers will be

spending time ensuring the Church yard is in first class order. Ladies

and friends of the Church will be busy baking cakes for the

refreshment tent. All we need is good weather. But we must not

forget that we will also be celebrating, at the same time, the

anniversary of the dedication of our Church on Holy Cross Day, 600

plus year ago. Holy Cross day celebrates the recovery of the true

cross by the Empress Helen in AD 332 and its recovery from the

Persians.

St Matthew has a feast day on September 21st. He was originally a

tax man from Capernaum when he was called to be one of Jesus’

disciples. After Jesus’ death he preached the gospel for 15 years in

Hebrew to the Jewish community in Judea. Later he took the gospel

to the Ethiopians, Macedonians, Persians and Pathians.

It is thought he died a natural death.

While we are enjoying our festivities in September let us not forget

the appalling floods in Pakistan and the dreadful conditions which the

people in the countryside have battled with to survive and will still be

suffering from the effects.. Thank you to all who contributed to the

Emergency Appeal by World Vision on Sunday 8th August. The total

will be printed in the magazine. Father Jim took our services that day

and as he had spent 8 years in Pakistan he was able to recount the

time he was cut off by floods in that country. Although the floods

were serious they were in a different area and on a lesser scale.

Thank you to the kind people who have donated the new floodlights.

We have had a set back by Neil’s fall from a ladder. I am sure he

thanks you all for good wishes for a speedy recovery. I understand he

Page 4: SEPT2010

may need more treatment in the future but he is back in action in a

supervisory role. We hope to have the new floodlights working by the

Flower Festival all being well although the temporary lights are still

working and doing a good job.

Hope to see you for ‘Songs of Praise’ on the Green with the Chapel,

Sunday 12th September at 6.00 pm. This is one of the Churches

together events in Finedon. Anyone who would like a lift speak to

Neil / or Jane please.

Please note the changes for Evensong for September in the magazine.

Hope to see you all during the Flower Festival weekend, at one of the

services, the concert or just to say ‘Hello’ or at all three.

Ride & Stride

The annual sponsored Ride and Stride takes place on Saturday 11th September between 10 am and 6 pm. Sponsor forms are available from Gill Foster (tel 680364). Sponsorship money is shared equally between our Church and the Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust, and as we can make application to the Trust for renovation grants, the Church benefits in both ways. Volunteers are also needed to act as recorders, so if you can spare an hour or two on that day please add your name to the rota on the Church notice board. Let’s hope it’s a fine day!

Betty Maile

There will be a Requiem Mass for Betty and her sister Doris on Sunday 5th September at 6pm. From Christian Aid News Summer edition

The village Of Baz Girha lies in remote western Afghanistan. There are no roads nearby and it takes an hour to drive over the rough, desert terrain. It is a harsh environment – the winter brings snow and ice, and the locals describe the summertime as “120 days of wind”. The people of Baz Girha and its neighbouring villages are isolated and poor, relying on the income they can make from trading their animals, goats and sheep’s milk, cheese and butter, or manual labour. Christian Aid partner the Rehabilitation Association and Agriculture, (RAADA) supports the community, providing people with technology and skills to help them increase their income and work their way to a better future. Local people have harnessed the power of the harsh desert wind using a wind –powered well to transform the “120 days of wind” into water. The well, designed and installed by RAADA, pumps water from deep underground without anyone having to lift a finger. “The wind is wonderful”, says Golah Nutzei, head of the women’s village council in Baz Girha. “Before, we used to have to bring water up in a bucket. It took a long time and a lot of hard work and it was still difficult to get enough to for all the animals to have a proper drink. But now the wind powers a mechanism that draws the water up for us. We can water 2,000 animals here now”.

In My DayIn My DayIn My DayIn My Day the ramblings of Hubert James

In my day it was about this time of year that the long lazy days of summer would glide to an end and a new school year would begin. And inevitably the first piece of work everyone had to do was; write an essay about what you did this summer. In them days I used to sit next to Penny Sullivan. What an exciting life she led. I’d be lucky to have gone on a day trip to Hunstanton, but Penny well she’d have been all over. Mablethorpe, Caister, even as far away as Bourton-on-the-Water one year. And when she got to these exotic places it wasn’t just making sand-castles and donkey rides. No, she’d be visiting stuff. Places where they had model railways or Lidos or zoos. It wasn’t as if her parents were rich but they did have Uncle Gilbert. Gilbert was her dad’s brother and not only did he have a car to get

Page 13: SEPT2010

them to these places, but he also courted a girl who bred tropical birds and supplied various parks and zoos, places with parrots and the like. She could get money off the tickets to loads of Bird Lands and Bird Worlds. They never got into a flap over a bill. In particular, she made a tidy living out of breeding and selling macaws. They don’t go cheap. In fact she spent time teaching them to talk because then she could charge more. Gilbert delivered birds all over the place and would take Penny with him for the ride. When the Mrs Green, our teacher read Penny’s essay about that summer’s travels with her aunt, she arranged for Gilbert to bring three of his wife’s parrots in for us to see. These were very special birds. Not only could they talk, but they could sing as well. He got them to sing; ‘Yellow Bird’. And then he got us to all join in. None of us will ever forget the day we all sang along with Gilbert Sullivan and the Parrots of Pen’s aunt.

Church Chuckles

A kindergarten teacher was walking around observing her classroom of children while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending;

and to have the two as close together as possible. -- George Burns
