WESTMINSTER DRESSES UP FOR THE GAMESHanging baskets have been attached to lamp posts around cen-tral London by Westminster Council as the city dresses up forLondon 2012.

A total of 275 of the suspended floral decorations have put up inthe Olympic colours of red, green, black, yellow and blue acrossfive locations of Westminster, from Harrow Road to Pimlico.

The baskets were chosen over banners following a consultationwith councillors, as the GLA is already funding a large number ofbanners to cover much of central Westminster.

Nearly twice as many baskets than banners could be funded andwill be in place for six months, rather than the three monthGames period.

The baskets can be found hanging on lamp columns alongPimlico Road and Tachbrook market, Pimlico.

The council also used some of the money to fund the Showtimeand Bandstand Marathon community events at PaddingtonRecreation Ground, which take place on Tuesday July 24th andSunday September 9th.

WILLIAM SMITHwas born on 22 September 1756 at Clapham. He was educated atthe dissenting academy at Daventry where he began to come underthe influence of Unitarians. He went into the family grocery businessand become a partner.

On 12 September 1781 he married Frances Coape. William andFrances had four other daughters: Frances, Joanna Maria, Julia,Anne and Patty and had five sons. Frances Smith, was the mother ofFlorence Nightingale.

William Smith was elected in 1784 as M.P for Sudbury, but lost hisseat in 1790 only to be elected as M.P. for Camelford. In 1796 hewas once again returned for Sudbury. In 1802 accepted the invitationof radicals to stand for Norwich, although he was defeated in theelection of 1806. The Whig party formed the next government under

Lord Grenville. Smith wasreturned again in 1807 and

1812.

William Smith heldstrong dissentingChristian convictions -he was a Unitarian, and was thus prevent-

ed from attaining theGreat Offices of State.

He, however, played aleading role in most of the

great contemporary parliamentaryissues, including the Dissenters' demands for the repeal of the Testand Corporation Acts. Smith supported the Unitarian Society, andbecame one of the founding members of the Friends of the PeopleSociety. In 1813 Smith championing the Doctrine of the Trinity Act1813, which, for the first time, made it legal to practice Unitarianism.

In June 1787, Smith campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade, and supported William Wilberforce. Once the trade had been halted,he turned his attention to freeing those who were already slaves. Hehelped found the London Society for the Abolition of Slavery in ourColonies.

In April 1791 he publicly supported the aims and principles of thenewly formed Unitarian Society, including support for the recentlywon liberty of the French. Smith was swiftly gaining a reputation as aradical, even a Jacobin. Because he had business contacts andfriends in Paris, he was more than once asked to act as a go-between for the government. In 1792 he arranged several meetingsbetween William Pitt and Maret, Napoleon's foreign minister, in adesperate attempt to avoid war.

Wiliam Smith died in 1835, and the blue plaque pictured can befound at 16 Queen Anne’s Street, SW1

For the sixthyear in a row they have been awarded the prestigious GreenFlag Award, a sign to visitors that the park has excellent facilitiesand is well-managed. CityWest Homes continues to be the onlysocial housing provider in the UK to wave the Green Flag.

Lillington and Longmoore estate is one of a record number of1,424 parks and green spaces who were awarded the GreenFlag and Community Award this year. This is indication that thevalue of green spaces is widely acknowledged as being vital tocommunities.

Alison Weller, green spaces manager, CityWest Homes, said:“It’s a fantastic achievement to win this award for the sixth year ina row. It’s recognition that our green spaces continue to beamongst the best in the UK and I am proud of the work theGreen Spaces team has put in over the years to achieve this. Nick Richards, head of CityWest Direct central area, said: "We'vecreated many green spaces at Lisson Green over the last threeyears, which include wildlife gardens and allotments. We've beenable to do this through additional works budgets, aerial fundingand ward budgets. I feel we are very close to achieving theaward and we will definitely be applying in 2013.Congratulations to Lillington and Longmoore estate and wehope that Lisson Green estate will soon join them as thecountry's second social housing estate to attain the GreenFlag."

In these recessionary times many people are experiencing the effect of ever rising costs. One firm to benefit from this isUptown Reservations. For the past 24 years Uptown has been accommodating visitors to London in private homes in thecentral areas, roughly Zone 1 on the Underground system. It’s a good time to offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation.Besides tax advantages, the 2012 Olympics games will produce a huge surge in demand for accommodation in the centreof town. And it is to be hoped that the site will continue to attract visitor long after the games have finished.Recent additions to Uptown’s property portfolio have included an apartment in Warwick Square, Pimlico and Ebury Street;Smith Street, Chelsea. Do you have a spare room with bathroom, and enjoy meeting interesting people, then find out moreby calling Monica Barrington at Uptown Reservations on 020 7937 2001.
