News from Security
This summer Security was kept busy with calls regarding alligators, snakes, turtles, and underage children on
golf carts. With the summer coming to an end Security is looking forward to the fall season and a change in the
weather. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Meeting, as always it will be great time! We will
continue to provide Harbor Island Owners and Guests with a welcoming, enjoyable and safe environment.
Safety Tips:
1. With Turtle Season here Security asks everyone to remember Lights Out on Beachfront properties at night.
2. If you are walking on the beach and see a Turtle please call Security with the location.
3. When heading to the beach remember to check the weather report or call us for current conditions and always
swim with a buddy.
4. When leaving the Island for an extended period of time, as a reminder, Security offers “House Watch” for your
convenience.
5. Please don’t feed the wildlife.

FALL MIGRATION CELEBRATION II OCTOBER 4 & 5, 2014
The Fripp Audubon Club invites you to join with us in celebrating the Fall Migration on the Beaufort Barrier Islands Important Bird Area The Beaufort Barrier Islands IBA consists of a unique chain of six barrier islands that start at the southern tip of the Saint Helena Sound and extends south to the north entrance of Port Royal Sound. These barrier islands include Harbor, Hunting, Fripp, Pritchard's Capers and Old Islands. These islands are separated from the mainland by extensive salt marsh with miles of tidal creeks and rivers dotted with a large number of small hammock islands. The Beaufort Barrier Islands IBA represents some of the richest diversity of habitat on the South Carolina coast. Many species of birds are permanent residents here as well as many species that winter, breed or migrate through. The beach and inlets provide nesting and foraging grounds for a great number of shorebirds and seabirds. These islands serve as a staging area for thousands of migratory birds each fall. The celebration will feature programs and bird walks by outstanding bird experts such as Felicia Sanders, Ken Scott and Melissa Bimbi. On Saturday programs and bird walks will be held on Harbor, Hunting and Fripp islands. Sunday morning will focus on “Barrier Island Exploration” to allow our participants to tour and explore these unique islands and habitats. On Fripp Island there will be a bird walk on Fripp Island led by Collins Strickland, Fripp Island Naturalist at 9 am. There are many opportunities to see the beauty and importance of the Beaufort Barrier Islands IBA. Suggestions: The Fripp Audubon Nature Trail on Porpoise Drive and the many trails on Hunting Island offer good birding in a mature maritime forest. Tickets and registration for the events may be completed at this website. A general ticket covers events; day passes to the inhabited islands, Hunting Island State Park and a box lunch. Online tickets cost $30.00. Tickets will be $45.00 at the door. An optional 3 hour cruise to the uninhabited islands of the IBA on the Fripper II a pontoon boat that carries 45 persons will available for an additional $15.00 per person.

News from Maintenance
Hello Harbor, this is Mike McElveen. I was recently promoted to Maintenance Supervisor, and
would like to start out by saying thank you for giving me the opportunity to take care of
Maintenance on “Your Island”. I have a few goals and ideas I think will provide for a better
maintained Island. As of now we are doing a lot of grass mowing, edging and grounds
maintenance by trimming back board walks and side roads, etc. We recently acquired a new
team member for the department by hiring Mike Miller. With the extra hand onboard we’ll be
able to catch up and keep on schedule. Any questions or ideas feel free to call or stop me on the
road. Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to take care of Harbor Island; I look forward
to meeting you at the Annual Meeting.
News from Beach and Racquet Club
Hello, I’m Melodye Van Volkinburg, your new BRC Manager. Some of you might remember me; I used to be
with the Security Department, before coming to the BRC. With the summer season winding down we are now
preparing for the Annual Owners Meeting, which is always a great time! Our preparation includes marking
down several things such as flip-flops, shirts, hats, towels and other items. While visiting, stop by the gift shop
and take home a souvenir. If you haven’t been on Island for a while you’ll notice we have some new work-out
equipment and more will be purchased next year. Also, we have a new 48”flat screen television in the River
Room and new outdoor space heaters are on their way. I look forward to meeting you!
Craig Butterfield & Bert Ligon, Jazz at Fripp
Versatile and celebrated jazz duo.
Jazz as it was meant to be played!
Fripp Island Friends of Music opens its 31st season of bringing music to the Sea
Islands with an impressive jazz duo. The very best of the uniquely American
musical idiom we call “jazz” is exemplified in spades by Bert Ligon and Craig
Butterfield.
Craig Butterfield makes his double bass dance and sing as seldom seen or heard.
He’s as much magician, as musician. Craig shares the stage with Bert Ligon,
celebrated not only for his remarkable piano skills but as the authoritative writer of
several standard references on jazz theory and technique; we can truthfully say “he
wrote the book on jazz”! This means the lucky Fripp audience will experience jazz
as it was meant to be played!
Sunday, October 26
Performance at 5 pm at the Fripp Island Community Center. 205
Tarpon Blvd. Fripp Island SC 29920
Tickets at the door: Adults $25 per person/$10 for students. All
attendees get a free pass at the Fripp Gate and are invited to join
the artists at an included catered event following the performance.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MANAGER
The summer season has come to an end and we’re now preparing for the Annual Homeowners Meeting which
will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014. Back to summer, our Fourth of July golf cart parade was a great
success and we had numerous participants. Every year it gets bigger and the golf carts are so well decorated
we’re beginning to look like a small “Tournament of Roses Parade!” Five winners were presented gift cards for
the Beach and Racquet Club. If you haven’t participated or watched the parade then you need to place it on
your calendar for next year, you won’t be disappointed. For a second year, Turtle Volunteers and the
Environmental Stewardship Committee put on weekly programs for owners and guests and they were a BIG
success. The presentations included Logger Head Turtles, Sharks, and Snakes of the Low Country.
We had an unfortunate beach drowning at the end of the summer season. We would like everyone to remind
your family and guests of the rip currents and tide changes we experience here on the beaches of Harbor Island.
Now, the Annual Meeting; as mentioned will be held on November 1, 2014 and we hope to see all of you on
Island. We have a great weekend planned which includes a Pig BBQ with all the sides. The tentative schedule
is;
1) 9/19/14 The annual mail out packet which includes, the Presidents Letter, financial reports, ballots,
candidate applications and bios.

5) 11/01/14 Annual Homeowners Meeting at Beaufort High School auditorium beginning at 1:00pm.

Association. Ballot count is held in the Community Center after the Annual Meeting concludes; owners
are welcome to watch the count.

Officers.
8) 11/01/14 The Pork Bar-B-Que begins with cocktails at 6:00pm and dinner at 7:00pm. Music provided

three vacancies to be filled;
