Daniel Dove: Remains of the FutureSeptember 7 30
Members only Artist Talk Friday, September 7, 5:30 pm, followed by a public Opening Reception, 6 9 pm, in conjunctionwith Art After Dark.
San Luis Obispo-based artist Daniel Dove creates large-scale paintings that defy categorization. At once realistic andabstract, some of the paintings hint at airplane explosions and other tragic events. Other paintings delve into mundaneeveryday life, depicting quirky, entirely imagined built environments devoid of any life forms. Mr. Dove intentionally keeps usguessing on the narrative content of his paintings, and he encourages viewers to come up with their own stories.
My paintings typically depict complex structures such as playscapes, reconstructed plane fuselages, and junk piles, all owhich are conglomerations of distinct parts. They are also artifacts of imagined events that range from the melancholic tothe calamitous, obliquely referring to global conicts, national crises, and the vernacular of American city life.
My process usually begins with a chance encounter with a place or image. After photographing and sketching it, I inventnew sources that range from virtual 3D computer models to physical dioramas and still lifes. While painting, I use a varietyof opposing techniques. This helps to foster my subjective, intuitive, and painterly response to technologically fabricatedsources, and pushes my paintings closer to multi-styled collage. Daniel Dove
Daniel Dove is an associate professor in the Art Department at Cal Poly and has exhibited his work extensively throughouthe United States.

Randy Strong: Finding Balance
September 7 30
Members only Artist Talk Friday, September 7, 5 pm, followedby a public Opening Reception, 6 9 pm, in conjunction with
Art After Dark.
Randy Strongs glass appears to be blowing in the wind,
stretching like taffy, and sweeping toward a distant shore.
Through the last four decades, Mr. Strongs work has beencharacterized by the use of difcult, dening techniques, materials, colors and forms. His newest sculptural workchallenges the concept of solid form in glass by expressing itspersonality in lightness and movement.
Mr. Strong is known for his distinctive crystal and gold goblets, his ground-breaking work with dichroic glass, imposingcast sculptures, and his newest gravity defying, color saturated, multi-piece sculptures. His artwork has been acquired bycollectors internationally and is a part of collections ranging from The Corning Museum in New York to the Louvre in Paris.
A master glass artist, Randy Strong is one of a handful of the early pioneering American Glass Artists that helped to deneAmerican Studio Art Glass. In 1970, he was present when Dale Chihuly and the Haubergs selected the location for the
now renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington. That same year, he established his own studio and gallery inNorthern California, where he continues to create, design and teach.
Mr. Strong will be giving a glassblowing demonstration on Saturday, September 8, 11:30 am at George Jercichs studio.$10 per ticket must be purchased in advance at the Museum, studio location on ticket, limited to 30 people.
