Facts Hard to Comprehend By Arnie Humphrey

Judgement day is coming, And it’s sooner than you think.

Step out on the dance floor, And someone will make a stink.

If he’s really disabled, Shouldn’t he be down and out? Before displaying an opinion, See what the case is all about. In my case, this was started, By someone other than me.

My peripheral vision, And my balance specifically.

When dancing, I’ve no problem, Circular momentum takes control.

When the music stops, My clumsiness is on a roll.

I can dance, but I can’t walk, Facts hard to comprehend.

No, I’m not a phony, But that’s the message that I send.

A TITLE THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT: SERGEANT STUBBY by: Ann Bausum By: Patti Blount – Durand Public Library: Director

If you like history and dogs, then Sergeant Stubby is a book you will thoroughly enjoy, by award winning author Ann Bausum. Bausum introduces us to a soldier, Private J. Robert “Bob” Conroy who befriends a stray dog, a little stump-tailed terrier mutt at a military training camp on Yale University Campus. It was not love at first sight for Conroy, but Stubby won him over and they became best friends, inseparable friends. Stubby’s heartwarming story begins in 1917 when America is about to enter the war. The 102nd infantry division was called into action and Conroy would not leave Stubby behind, so this little dog became a stowaway aboard a troop transport ship bound for Europe. Of course Stubby was soon discovered and won over not only the hearts of the entire in-fantry, but also the commanding officer. On the battlefield, Stubby was a source of comfort in the trenches, and to the wounded, and even captured a German soldier. He helped soldiers cope with stress on and off the battlefield by offering comfort to those soldiers suffering from PTSD, which during WWI was called “shell shock.” He could easily be the Father of all therapy dogs. In addition to offering his heart and love to the soldiers, he was on the front lines. He would alert soldiers to the scent of gas and had his own gas mask, and pointed medics toward wounded allies on the battlefield. Stubby proudly wore a mili-tary coat specially made for him that included well deserved victory medals. This fearless, devoted dog became the mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment Yankee Division in WWI, and the most famous dog of WWI. He was the first dog to be giv-en rank in the U.S. Armed Forces. Stubby’s talents continued after the war, continuing on as the Yankee Division’s beloved mascot, and became a star of the vaudeville stage. After his death, he was stuffed and now resides in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Sergeant Stubby is available for checkout in regular print. There is a juvenile edition which is great for anyone to read. If you would like to reserve or checkout this book, please stop by the Library during regular business hours, or contact the Library InfoLine at 715-672-8730. With school now in session, the Durand Library is now in its School Schedule for the months of September/October/November: Monday-Friday: 8am-7pm, Saturday: 9am-12pm, Sunday: CLOSED.

PEPIN COUNTY AGING WISHES TO THANK OUR RECENT DONORS:

Loretta Hofacker

RIVERVIEW COMMUNITY and SENIOR CENTER SAYS

THANK YOU!

Donations: Irene Schuh Joyce Grochowski Carol K. Bauer (2 donations)

Riverview Community and Senior Center

Pepin County Council of Senior Citizens held their July meeting in Durand at the Riverview Community Center. President Floyd Briggs called the meeting to order at 10:00am. All board mem-bers were present except Galen Radle. I apologize for the error in the June Golden Age article about the site of our next meeting, and for any confusion it may have caused members.

Discussion included the updates to the Center with the area now called the Golden Room where the pool table was stored for many years. A group of volunteers got together to clean the win-dows and the floor, move the bookcase and game center cabinet into the room, and a new rug was laid. It makes a very cozy room for bible study, reading, game playing and private meet-ings. The view of the river is love-ly at this time of year and will be even prettier in the fall. The over-hanging tree limbs were trimmed and the trees themselves were deemed very healthy. The outside faucet issue has been fixed and the rock garden was cleared of the overgrown weeds and trees.

Pastor Cole and Brenda have been very busy with trimming of the shrubs and mowing. They have also been painting inside, now that we have removed the large quilt rack and cabinets from the alcove. They were also able to move the large hutch to the back wall, and it can be seen as you enter the building. This area will now be a “Craft Corner” to display the hand-crafted items which have been donated for sale.

A joint decision with the Pastor was made to provide a large screen television for the main wall, making it more accessible for use and viewing by groups using the Center for presentations, or wish to display pictorial memories at special events.

Our computer has limited capabilities and we currently have a local expert working on updates. This will enable us to keep more current records of rentals, events and correspondence.

Our long-time treasurer, Kathy Swanson, wishes to “retire” from her many duties at the Center, and a member of the Council has agreed to take the position of treasurer as of Sept. 1st, 2018. Kathy was recruited by Jane Pittman, and accepted this position in January of 2009. She has served as site manager and treasur-er ever since, and deserves a break.

Rita McDonnell is working on presentations for Seniors, and hopefully will have great events this fall for everyone to attend.

Thanks to those who have responded to our re-

quest for volunteers to fill in for office staff. We

appreciate your cooperation and will be setting

up a call schedule and meeting for all those inter-

ested. Please feel free to drop into the Center to

participate in the Farkle games or card games,

and to visit during our open hours. Marge Briggs

Preparation Pays Off

During the years I worked as a Caregiver Coordinator, I talked with caregivers about home safety, caregiver burnout, self-care for the caregiver, and also ways to prepare for the future. Throughout that time, I also watched my father’s health decline, and in turn watched my mother become a full-time caregiver.

As I visited with my mother about various things related to caregiving, I slowly realized that I too had become a care-giver. Once I accepted this role, I decided it was time to start paying attention to the many things I had encouraged other caregivers to do, mainly getting legal paperwork in order. I had never actually talked to my parents about their healthcare wishes, whether they have a will or powers of attorney, where they stand financially in case someone needs nursing home care, or what type of insurance they have. I decided to start addressing these issues with my mom when-ever we would visit my parents in South Dakota.

When I was only a “daughter”, a trip to visit my parents was like a mini-vacation. Mom would have a pan of caramel rolls waiting along with other favorite foods. I would kick back on the couch and let the grandparents play with my kids and just enjoy the visit. When I added “caregiver” to my role, the visits began to have more of a purpose than just a relaxing time. I began to talk with my mother about the not-so-fun topics of estate planning, advance directives, and long-term care. I discovered that it is a lot easier to encourage other people to do these things than to do them your-self. I returned from these visits tired, frustrated, and a bit sad. Caregiving truly is a stressful thing.

During that year I learned a lot about my parents. I learned that they have POA papers in place. I learned the names and locations of all their insurance policies. I understood their feelings regarding healthcare and end-of-life issues and I helped them start inquiring about financial assistance in case there is a need for long term care. Discussing these top-ics was not fun and there were many times I wondered if I was making a big deal out of nothing. I thought it might be easier to just wait and see if we would really need that information and if so, figure things out at that time.

And then I got that dreaded call - my dad was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and chronic heart failure. I made an emergency trip to South Dakota to help my worried mother. As I drove across southern Minnesota I thought about the things we would need – POA papers, insurance policies and answers to questions about resuscitation. I was so relieved that I had taken the time and effort to go over these things earlier with my parents. Dealing with the deci-sions and emotions of Dad’s current situation was stressful enough by itself. I could not imagine the added stress of hav-ing to fumble through files searching for legal documents or not knowing anything about how to finance a nursing home placement.

As it turned out, all those unpleasant conversations and planning for the future really did pay off! Regardless of how uncomfortable it was to talk to my mom about advance directives, end-of-life decisions and personal finances, I was glad I was bold enough to do so before the crisis literally hit home.

My dad survived the pneumonia but was too weak to return home to mom. We placed him in a nursing home for reha-bilitation with hopes of moving him back home. Watching my mom say goodbye that first night was hard, but my dad adjusted beautifully to life in the local nursing home, and my mother fought her struggles with loneliness and guilt with dignity, and continued to move forward. Ahh, the life of a caregiver.

Mark Your Calendar Submitted by Judy Norrish

If you have a Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan, mark your calendar for a review of your plan between October 15 and December 7.

Every year, insurance companies can change their list of covered drugs and their pricing structure, known as the plan formulary. This means that even if you are taking the same medications, the amount you pay for your medications, the plan premiums, deductibles, and copays may also change in 2019.

All Medicare beneficiaries should review their current coverage during Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7th. Find out if your current plan is still the best option to meet your medica-tion or health needs. Nothing is more frustrating then to go to the pharmacy in January and find out your 2018 plan will not pay for one of your expensive medications in 2019. Or you receive your premium bill in 2019 and the premium is $20 higher than last year.

Free, unbiased assistance with plan comparisons is available from Judy Norrish, the Elder Benefit Specialist to insure you will have the best coverage in 2019. Call her to set up an appointment between October 15 and December 7 at 715-672-8941 Ext. 169. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

Refresh your driving skills with the AARP SMART DRIVER™ COURSE!

You will learn: * Defensive driving techniques * Proven safety strategies * New traffic laws and rules of the road Plus, there are no tests to pass. You simply sign up and learn. Upon completion you could receive a multi-year discount on your car insurance.*

When: Tuesday, October 30, 2018— 1:00pm to 5:00pm

Location: Village Hall in Pepin, WI

To Register: Call Cammi at 715-672-8941 Ext 115, or email [email protected]

Classroom Course: $15 for AARP members • $20 for non-members.
