Dear dot readers,

This issue of the dot spans the end of a year and the beginning of another. In keepingwith ABA's dynamism and pace, the first quarter of 2014 has reflected the same rhythm ofactivity as the final quarter of the 2013. This edition brings you the buzz from our variousdivisions. The activities you will find mentioned within these pages show how our Grouphas embraced the New Year wholeheartedly and how we have unfolded agendas ofaccomplishment.

Incidentally, this year has brought about a milestone worth celebrating for the dot.Together with all of you, our valued readers, we have now completed three years in print!That’s three years of keeping each other updated on news, celebrating successes, talking toeach other through these pages and keeping the ABA family connected. Thank you fortaking ownership of the dot and making it what it is.

As editor, I would like to extend a special invitation to those among us who haven’t yetjoined in the fun of the dot games and quizzes. It’s your time, to win the next set ofprizes, so go for it! The Dot is happy to report that the Hamadbin Khalifa University (HBKU) held a receptionon October 9th to honor the Ali Bin Ali Groupfor their ongoing contribution and patronage.The reception, held at the HBKU StudentCenter, was attended by several high profileguests from the Ali Bin Ali Group includingMr. Adel Ali Bin Ali, Chairman and President,other distinguished guests, faculty and stafffrom HBKU, and its partner universities.

As part of our CSR activities, the Ali Bin AliGroup sponsors six students from various HBKUpartner universities through the Ali Bin AliExcellence Sponsorship Award. After theconclusion of the reception, it was announcedthat our Group would be sponsoring morestudents for the next academic year.

Mr. Peter McElwaine, the Advisor to the Boardof Partners at the Ali Bin Ali Group, spoke at thereception on behalf of the Group and said:“Education is one of the key ways with whichwe can empower individuals, and the Ali Bin AliGroup believes that this starts with the youth oftoday. Through formal educational programssuch as this one we can equip young peoplewith the necessary skills and motivation thatthey will need to succeed.”

The final speech of the evening was byMahdiyeh Mahmoodzadeh, a journalismstudent at NU-Q, who spoke on behalf of all ofthe scholarship recipients and said: “Withoutthis generous scholarship from the Ali Bin AliGroup and the HBKU Scholarship team, I wouldnever have been able to turn my dreams ofstudying journalism into a reality.”

The Ministry of Labour in the State of Qatarpublished the first edition of the ‘Labour & WorkerGuide 2013-2014.’ Supporting the Ministry in its endeavours to bringclarity to the regulations, the Ali Bin Ali Group cameforward as the official sponsor for the guide.The ‘Labour & Worker Guide 2013-2014’ is designedas a directory that will provide an informativecommunication list of all forms of business in theregion. Printed in both Arabic and English, the guidecovers labour laws, government services and all theevents and conferences in Qatar.

The Ali Bin Ali Group supported this worthy cause by becoming theSilver Sponsor of the ‘Seeing is Believing’ event 10th Anniversarysouvenir. ‘Seeing is Believing’ is a global fundraising initiative taken bythe Standard Chartered Bank to tackle avoidable blindness. The fundraising event, which took place at Katara on 23rd September2013, was graced by the presence of Sophie, Countess of Wessex andseveral dignitaries. Over QR 300,000 was raised during the auction. Established in 2003, the aim of this project is to raise USD 100 Millionby 2020 for projects that raise awareness, and help eliminate avoidableblindness.The Ali Bin Ali Group is pleased to take part in this project to make adifference as there are 39 million blind people in the world and 80% ofblindness is preventable or treatable.

ABA’s Internal Audit Department was happyto be a participant at a key Accounting andTax Seminar organised by PWC Qatar. Theconference focussed on formulating aContinuing Strategy to Address Qatari andMiddle East business community. The eventtook place on the 23rd of September 2013at the W hotel at West Bay Doha. Expanding knowledge on tax implication onthe domestic entities existing in Qatar was acrucial benefit gathered by the ABA InternalAudit team members who participated. The team confirmed that learning about Taximplications, Risks and Opportunities fordomestic entities looking for expansion inInternational Market and studying IFRSAccounting Developments over the recentpast enabled them to bring back valuableknowledge to the department.

The Poppy Ball is held each year by QBBFto support the Royal British Legion PoppyAppeal by raising funds. The event tookplace on 14th November 2013 in theMirqab ballroom at Four Seasons Hotel,West Bay. More than 450 guestsattended this prestigious event. The generousdonation was a result of proceedings from apercentage of sales made by the ABA Watchesand Jewelry during Ramadan 2013. The ABA Logistics team welcomed the arrival of theyear 2014 with a fun team get-together on theJanuary 2, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the office premises.Teams from DC Conference Room, DC Warehouse, LVQWarehouse, St. 24 Warehouse and Nestle Warehousetook part in the new year celebrations. The Management team Headed by the GeneralManager Jon Mayson, Finance Manager MosharrafHossain, Asst. Manager C&F Nesser Al Shraideh,Distribution Manager Ahmed Mahmoud and theManagement team as well as the Warehouses Headedby the Asst. Warehouse Managers AbdulrhmanSoukieh and Ismail Valiparambil, Supervisor SitaramThapa, Team Leaders Til Bikram Subedi and JonathanAntuerfia and Warehouse staff were present at theoccasion. The event brought a positive vibe to the team andstrengthened the team spirit while giving a fresh startto the on coming year. The Logistics team looksforward to face new challenges and rise to newheights in this year.

As the year 2014 dawned with newchallenges, the ABA Group HumanResources team took the initiative toundergo a strategic transformation.During the HR Conference 2014 thatwas held at the Torch Hotel on 22ndJanuary 2014, the team discussed thenew HR agenda and the roadmap thatwill span over the next 3 years. The HR Conference 2014, which wasthe first of its kind, was led by Mr.Ahmad Ali Zia - Group Head of HRwho introduced an innovative newstructure to the team. The fresh rolesand responsibilities are designed to

maximize the HR team’sperformance to be in parwith the global industrystandards.

During its second phase, the HR teamintroduced the new structure and itsimplementation methodologies to theABA higher management. As a vitalpoint within the core of theorganization, the strategictransformation of the HR team willenhance the competitive edge of theABA Group to reach its full potential. Fortified with novel ideas anddirection, the ABA Group HR team isamped up to face new challenges andis looking forward to contribute to theGroup to reach new heights in themarket.

2nd Jan - 2014

The Ali Bin Ali Group held its Seven-a-side FootballTournament at Al Arabi Sports Club on the 4th and 5th ofDecember 2013. The fun-filled event, which went on from8.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. was immensely enjoyed by theparticipants in a festive atmosphere. This year the Football Tournament saw the highest number ofparticipants with 14 teams representing various divisions ofthe Ali Bin Ali Group. During the finals between the PepsiTeam Vs ABA Friends, after an excellent display ofsportsmanship and a fiercely competitive game, the PepsiTeam emerged triumphant. Senior Division ManagerMohammed Imran gave away the trophy to Pepsi TeamCaptain Hussein Al Shafei.Mohammed Imran, who is also the Head of OrganizingCommittee, thanked the teams for their participation for thisexciting and very competitively played game. He further saidthat many exciting sports events such as Basket Ball andCricket Inter Division tournaments will be held soon alongwith the eagerly awaited Olympic Day.

The IA/Mars division participated inQatar’s biggest event of the year 2013,Red Bull Flugtag as the exclusivechocolate and ice cream supplier.Attracting thousands of spectators, theevent was held in November 2013 at theMuseum of Islamic Art (MIA).The legendary Red Bull Flugtag, whichwas first took place in Vienna, Austria in1992, challenges the extreme sportsenthusiasts to design build and pilothuman-powered flying machines off a 6meters high flight deck. It was indeed a privilege for the IA/ Marsteam to be able to contribute as anofficial supplier and become a part ofone of the best events in Doha.

The Ali Bin Ali Group extended its support to theQatar Squash Federation by coming forward asthe main sponsor of the 13th Qatar ClassicSquash Championship. The event took place atthe Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex from10th – 15th November 2013.

Egypt’s Mohamed El Shorbagy beat England’sNick Matthew to clinch the 2013 Qatar Classictitle. The final lived up to expectations, withboth players trying out all the tricks of the trade.The winners received their prizes from the ViceChairman of the Ali Bin Ali Group Mr. Nabeel AliBin Ali.

“Last year, when I picked up the runners-uptrophy, I promised Qatar Squash FederationPresident Mr. Nabeel Ali bin Ali that I wouldcome back next year and win the tournament –so I’m glad that I kept my promise,” Shorbagysaid while accepting his trophy.

The IA & PCP Finance team got together to embark on an afternoonof desert safari with their family members on the 6th December2013. The day of fun and excitement started from 2 p.m. whichwent on till 9 p.m.The desert safari, which is also the team’s annual gathering for 2013started from sea line beach to Khor Al Udaid desert which offered amagnificent desert drive to the team. Everyone had an enjoyabletime driving through the sand dunes, posing for a beautiful photoshoot and engaging in other games such as volleyball, sandboarding, kids’ games and many more. The team enjoyed a delicious Arabic barbeque dinner and the eventwas concluded after having a prize giving to all the participants. It was a great occasion for the team to have some fun timestogether with their families once in a year in a unique and non-traditional manner.

The Ali Bin Ali Family yet againcelebrated the ABA Olympic Day2014 with great success. It was anevening to remember where over1,800 of our members gottogether to celebrate the NationalSports Day on the 11th February2014 at the Al Arabi Ground. The theme for the Olympic Day2014 was “Together we work,Together we play”. After thesenior management officiallydeclared the commencement ofthe Olympic Day by lighting theOlympic lamp, we saw manyenergetic sports enthusiasts takingpart various sports activities. The Red, Blue, Orange and Greenteams competed with each otherwith much zest while the crowdcheered on. The ABA membersand their families had a gala time

winning prices and surprises atvarious fun events. Events of the day included 100Meter Dash and 400 Meter Dashfor Men, 800 Meter Walking Racefor Women, 50 Meter Dash forWomen, Tug of War for Men andWomen and Fancy DressCompetition, Potato Race, Lemonand Spoon, Sack Race, Blowing theBalloon, Picking the Straw, Passingthe Parcel and Score a Goal for thechildren. The day came to a close with theTeam Red as the overall winner ofthe Olympic Day with a total of 780points. Team Blue scored 420 points,Team Orange scored 330 points andTeam Green scored 300 points.

The ABA Medical division took part inExcellence in Diabetes (EiD) Qatar2014 which was held at the QatarNational Convention Centre from28th February – 2nd March 2014.

The event consisted of seminars,workshops and an exhibition raisingawareness about preventing theepidemic of diabetes and obesity,appropriate use of insulin, diabetesservices in Qatar, diabetesmanagement and last but not least ishow to treat diabetics.

The ABA Medical division participatedin the event with co-ordination withtheir business partner in Diabetes,Medtronic.

More than 100 people attended theevent which offered a greatopportunity for sharing the latestscientific data in diabetes with theleading physicians and dialectologistsfrom all around the world.

"Why, with thisknowledge and thesegadgets," you may ask,"do I still feel like I can'tget everything done Ineed to?"The answer issimple.everythingyou everlearnedaboutmanagingtime is acomplete waste of timebecause it doesn't work.Practice the followingtechniques to becomethe master of yourown time:

1. - Carry a schedule andrecord all your thoughts,conversations andactivities for a week. Thiswill help you understandhow much you can get doneduring the course of a day andwhere your precious momentsare going. You'll see how muchtime is actually spent producing

results and how much time iswasted on unproductivethoughts, conversations andactions.

2. - Any activity or conversationthat's important to your successshould have a time assigned toit. To-do lists get longer andlonger to the point wherethey're unworkable.

Appointmentbooks work.Scheduleappointmentswith yourself

and create time blocks for high-priority thoughts, conversations,and actions. Schedule when theywill begin and end. Have the

discipline to keep theseappointments.

3. - Plan to spend at least 50percent of your time engaged inthe thoughts, activities andconversations that produce mostof your results.

4. - Schedule time forinterruptions. Plan time to bepulled away from what you're

doing. Take, forinstance, theconcept of having"office hours." Isn't"office hours"another way ofsaying "plannedinterruptions?"

5. - Take thefirst 30minutes ofevery day toplan yourday. Don'tstart your day

until youcomplete your time plan. Themost important time of your dayis the time you schedule toschedule time.

6. - Take five minutes beforeevery call and task to decidewhat result you want to attain.This will help you know what

success looks like before youstart. And it will also slow timedown. Take five minutes aftereach call and activity todetermine whether your desiredresult was achieved. If not, whatwas missing? How do you putwhat's missing in your next callor activity?

7. - Put up a "Do not disturb"sign when you absolutely haveto get work done

8. - Practice not answering thephone just because it's ringingand e-mails just because theyshow up. Disconnect instantmessaging. Don't instantly give

people yourattention unlessit's absolutelycrucial in yourbusiness to offeran immediatehuman response.Instead, schedulea time to answeremail and return

phone calls.

9. - Block out other distractionslike Facebook and other forms ofsocial media unless you usethese tools to generate business.

10. - Remember that it'simpossible to get everythingdone. Also remember that oddsare good that 20 percent of yourthoughts, conversations andactivities produce 80 percent ofyour results.

I am excited to have completed my probationperiod from Sept 2013 to Dec 2013.If I had to recall my experience during this period, the first thing thatcomes to my mind is the first day on my job. When I met my bossand new colleagues, I saw that everyone sincerely working on theircomputers without breaking silence.Boss called me “we will start with some easy work, talk to Mohamedhe will fix and make necessary changes to your computer” I returnedto my seat and opened outlook with hundreds of Mohameds in theAddress Book! The confusion itself was enough to laugh with all mycoworkers when I share this story now. I was pleasantly surprised tosee that they didn’t make me feel that I am a new comer to thecompany. Everyone in the company was full of warmth and affection. This enabled me to quickly learn about the product lines, companyphilosophies and work culture with the able guidance from my bossand colleagues. I came with lot of energy and vigor from my previouswork experience and I enthusiastically applied this to my current job.

There were many challenges during this period but I was able tosuccessfully overcome them. Special thanks should be given to mycoworker who patiently helped me out whenever I panic trying toremember people’s names. We have such a great team in Ali Bin AliIn between my probation period FMCG organized the year end picnicto the desert safari in which I also took part.
