Town Walls & QuaysideRestoration Commences

By Christy ParkerYoughal Town Council has signed a contract Cobh-basedCornerstone Construction Ltd. to restore the collapsed section ofthe town walls near Raheen Park. Town Clerk Liam Ryan says the

work will commenceimmediately and“should be completedwithin two months.”The company has exten-sive experience in thearea of heritage restora-tion, including theCrawford Observatory,UCC, Dunboy CastleHotel, Castletownbere,Castle Hyde HouseFermoy (Flatley’s flat!)

and Carrig House, Cobh, for which it received an ArchitecturalExcellence Award from Cobh Chamber of Commerce. The Department of the Environment is effectively funding theproject through €120,000 grant aid to Youghal Walled Town’sNetwork via Heritage Council. The sum will also finance studiesinto the state andrequirements of thetown walls generally, which will be undertak-en by AbsolutePrecision Surveying,Glanmire. The wall initially col-lapsed in early 2008,followed by furtherdeterioration in recentmonths. “The secondfall was actually a bless-ing,” says Mr, Ryan, ‘as it removed a bridge over the original col-lapse that would have proved very difficult and more expensive tonegotiate.”

Quayside restoration also commences. The council has also entered contract for restoration work at the

Pier Head and Greens Quay. Theproject will address the problem ofwater infiltrating the structures."They are not actually dangerous atpresent but could become so unlesstreated," says the Town Clerk. Thework is being financed by €400,000from the Department of Transport -aconsiderable acquirement in thesebelt-fastening days. The project, being undertaken by L

&M Keating Ltd., Co Clare and is scheduled to begin in the firstweek of September. It will also include road re-surfacing at GreensQuay. Thank God!

By Michael TwomeyAfter 38 years of service to Kyle National School, Principal,Catherine Foley has officially retired. A life dedicated to educationwas celebrated at the Walter Raleigh Hotel last Saturday night. Before meeting family, colleagues and past pupils Catherine tooktime to reflect on her teaching career. That career, carried out withdignity and humility, has brought both rewards and challenges.Catherine started her career in teacher training at Blackrock,Dublin. She then taught for four years in Waterford before takingup her post at Kyle. “When I first came to kyle people said I wouldfind it difficult having 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes in the one roombut I had classes of 49 pupils in Waterford,” she said. School wasvery different when Catherine arrived in Kyle and she recalledanother time lomg before the school's 2008 renovations. “Mygoodness, there have been so many changes. The school had tworooms divided by a partition, no playground and an outside toilet. The children played in the glen and paddled in the stream,” sheadded. Society has changed at an extraordinary rate in Ireland andCatherine embraced the educational needs of her pupils withvigour. “My teaching methodologies have changed over the yearsand so has my approach to teaching. I was constantly trying tokeep abreast with education,” she said. And the changes in pupils?“I can honestly say I've been extremely lucky in Kyle, the childrenare so nice and I have not really seen that kind of change.” Fellowteacher and colleague of 30 years, Mary Rohan paid tribute toCatherine's ability to communicate effectively and with warmth topupils and staff. “She was always very caring and conscientiousand took an interest in every child. Any new staff that came to theschool she was always very helpful. She will be missed by thecommunity and I will miss her very much,” she said.

Tribute was also paid by past pupil, Barry O' Connell who was in6th class when Catherine arrived at the Kyle school. “She gave 38years of outstanding service. She was a brilliant teacher and did agreat job in the management of the school. She was at the fore-front of developing new ideas and kept up with the changes ineducation. She was very professional in the running of theschool,” he said. In one of those peculiar coincidences of fateBarry's youngest child starts 6th class this term. “She taught all myfamily, she is a gifted person,” he added. Catherine had been fight-ing for the school to be modernised for 30 years and in 2008 theschool was renovated with a staffroom and new office added.Barry said the work was a 'wonderful legacy to her'. It's difficultto evaluate the effect a good teacher can have on young peoples'lives. I asked Catherine if she felt she gad achieved some of thegoals she might have set herself when she started out 42 years ago.“I still think teaching is a vocation. I always wanted to teach. I dofeel I achieved the things I wanted to. The greatest satisfactionwas seeing the everyday little achievements of the children.” And

the highlights? “Seeing the new building to the school after 30years and the day Mark Landers brought back the Liam McCarthycup,” she said. Life moves on and Catherine, ever ready to acceptchange, will move with it. “I truly will miss it but I felt it was time.I'll miss the daily interaction with the pupils and parents,Confirmation and Communion days and the little chats in themorning,” she said. Kyle has lost an inspiration and an anchor tothe community. The new and improved Kyle National School is alegacy. The other legacy lasts longer than buildings, it's in thehearts and minds of past and present pupils where an indeliblemark has been left. It's up to other teachers to follow. DoesCatherine have any advice for them? What is the golden rule?“Always treat others as you would like them to treat you,” shereplied.

Gortroe Hall Ltd, thecompany established to satisfy funding acquirement has justreceived €49,000 grant aid from South and East Cork AreaDevelopment Ltd (SECAD). The money is the first instalment of€93,000 allocated by SECAD towards the restortation project."Without SECAD we simply could not have repaired the hall. Weare very grateful to them and indeed to all who supported us," saysGortroe Hall Ltd's chairman Kieran Mariga. The restoration is the latest chapter in a story of tremendousendurance and a commitment to a historic structure by a vibrant,self-assured community. The hall is owned by the Church, anddates back hundreds of years. It's previous, dilapidated roof was agalvanise structure apparently constructed from huts dismantled atPilmore during the Famine. Incredibly, it remained in fine fettleuntil about two years ago when "it began to leak and the hallbecame quite damp," explains Kieran. Church organisations cannot access government funding and soGortroe Hall Ltd was formed and acquired the structure on a 35-year lease from the Church. The 12-member company approachedSECAD with a roof repair problem but negotiations soon revolvedround a more complete structural renovation. The subsequentwork, undertaken through the summer by Michael Cronin contrac-tors, Ballymadog, has also seen new wiring, lighting, heating win-dows, doors and disability installed, along with other internal andexternal modifications. SECAD, whose Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 hasreceived €8.5m through the European Union and the NationalDevelopment Plan, funded 75% of the €130,000 total cost.Gortroe Hall Ltd acquired a loan for the remainder from YoughalCredit Union. The local community, its neighbours and friendsactively supported the campaign to meet the repayments. A race night at the Quality Hotel earned a massive €20,000. "Thefundraising committee were fantastic. They sold horses months inadvance @ €20 each, got sponsorship for races and on the night.People from everywhere rallied to the cause," Kieran say. Furtherfundraising and hall rental will, hopefully, meet the outstanding€10,000. The completed task has not merely renovated a hall but has re-assured a community. The hall is as relevant to Gortroe as the TajMahal is to India and has the added attraction that you don't haveto remove your shoes (or wellingtons) to enter it! It has been, stillis and is expected always to be, central to community activity."Everything from celebrations, theatre shows, card nights, aplayschool, Christmas parties and so on is held there," saysKieran, "and communities from as far as Clashmore, Ballymacodaand Inch avail of it." They'll be praising it to the new rafters now.

Placements Cut for SchoolLeavers with Disabilities

Many young people with disabilities in East Cork who finishedsecond level special education in June are being denied access toadult day services such as sheltered workshops, David Stanton TD,Fine Gael Disability Spokesperson, has discovered. “Normally, when young adults with disabilities finish school, they wouldsecure a place in a local day service provided by a local disabilityorganisation. These services offer further education and trainingor operate as a form of sheltered workshop and are essential to thedevelopment and wellbeing of these young people. “However, thisyear the HSE South have experienced a shortfall in funding. Thisshortfall has resulted in a cut in the number of new day serviceplacements. Parents of disabled school leavers are simply beingadvised that no new places are available and their child will haveto remain in their home. This is totally impractical for parents, many of whom are at work. “The HSE and the Government havebeen aware of this problem for some time. I highlighted the issueearlier in the year in the Dáil but unfortunately nothing it seemshas been done and these young people with disabilities and theirparents have been abandoned by the Government.

Christy Parker reviews the weekly Garda report.Provisional licence holders driving unaccompanied by a fully qualifieddriver can expect to be prosecuted in the coming weeks, according toYoughal gardai. Sergeant Orla Coughlan told listeners to CommunityRadio Youghal that young males continue to dominate car accident statis-tics, adding that the figures would also feature single females. Against thatbackground, she said, students returning to school would be on provision-al licences and that the busier roads and shortening days coinciding withthis time of year heralded increased danger on the roads. "We will stopunaccompanied drivers," she statedUninsured: The sergeant stressed that Provisional drivers must display L' plates andthat an accompanying driver should be qualified by at least two years, bebelow the legal alcohol limit and be drug-free. She said unaccompaniedProvisional licence holders are effectively not insured at all as, "it givesthe insurers an opt-out clause in the case of an accident." She also stressedthat "the speed limits are not a target" and that learner drivers should notaspire to reach them. Again in reference to the impending winter months, the garda asked that drivers be particularly alert for pedestrians andcyclists who, in turn, should wear reflective clothing. Drug driving: Sergeant Coughlan said that the current increase in random breath testingwill continue for some time yet. Beyond alcohol detection, they areintended to target criminals generally, she added. The sergeant explainedthat while breath tests do not detect drug usage, if a garda suspected adriver had used drugs he could demand a blood or urine sample. The min-imum disqualification for drink or drug/driving now is one year, raisedfrom three months. Tyres: The sergeant drew attention the high rate of un-roadworthy tyres beingdetected and warned that the winter weather will greatly exacerbate theirdanger. Non-display of NCT discs has become increasingly prevalentalso, she said and gardai will impound such cars. "Proof of having appliedfor the test should be carried with you," she added. Impounding is alsolikely to result where car tax has expired by over two months. Big increase in shoplifting: Off the road, the past week had been relatively quiet, Sergeant Coughlanreported, with a number of drug searches unearthing only a few minorinfringements. However, shoplifting has increased dramatically. Sheurged shopkeepers to report suspicious activity and to "follow a customerround the shop" if concerned enough. The sergeant said that CCTV is very effective both for detection anddeterrent and urged shopkeepers to install it. "Even the dummy ones arequite good at dissuading criminals," she added. Retired gardai Sergeant Coughlan concluded her report with several notices: 1) A retirement function for recently retired garda Pat Grace will be heldat the Walter Raleigh Hotel on Sunday Sept 13th. The night will include afour-course meal, dj and live band. Tickets, @ €26 are available fromYoughal garda station (024) 92200. The sergeant said Garda Pat O'Learyis also retiring but that both men are being replaced. "We are losing expe-rience but gaining youth," she promised, in wishing the retired membersthe very best. 2) Youghal Community Alert's monthly meetings will resume on TuesdaySeptember 1st, in the Walter Raleigh Hotel at 8pm.

GLENBOWER ROVERS QUALIFYFOR EAST CORK JUNIOR ‘A’

FOOTBALL FINALGaelic Football will be very much to the fore in KilleaghGAA Club over the next few weeks, as Glenbower Roverslook forward to taking their place in the final of the MichaelO’Connor Motor Factors Junior ‘A’ Grade FootballChampionship writes John Cashman.

Qualification was secured last week when Carrigtwohillwere overcome in a tight semi final contest played at PaddyWalshe Memorial Park in Castlemartyr. Now the locals willhave to adopt a “wait and see” policy whilst Lisgoold andCloyne contest the second semi final next week.

Originally this game was scheduled to be played onSaturday next but the match has now been re fixed forThursday September 10th, with the winners due back on theplaying pitch against Glenbower Rovers on Sunday weekSeptember 13th.

After making it to the divisional ‘A’ grade hurling final lastyear, Killeagh’s elimination from both the county seniorhurling championship and the local ‘A’ grade competitionhas led to more training time for the football panel, who willbe eager to bring the Jim Ryan Memorial Cup home for thefirst time and go forward to represent the Imokilly divisionin the county arena.

The domestic football championship in the East Cork hasoften very much played second fiddle to it’s hurling counter-part in recent years and the involvement of a number ofteams with the sliothar both locally and in the county fieldshas often led to the decider been played in late autumn. However, this season the competition which began back inmid March is scheduled for completion on time, thus mean-ing that there will no need for nomination and ultimatelymeaning that whichever team emerges victorious in the finalfixed for Youghal, will probably go forward with greaterintent in pursuit of county honours.

Glenbower’s campaign in the championship thus far has, tosay the least, been interesting. They have played four games– three of which have been against Erin’s Own. The localsstepped into the fray as early as Wednesday March 11,where the contest ended Glenbower Rovers 0-10 Erin’s Own1-7. Sean Long was the hero of the evening in Youghalkicking over a point with the last kick of the match to ensureanother sixty minutes of football between the sides.

Twelve days later the teams met again where another tightcontest followed, but in the end the spoils of victory went toGlenbower by 0-11 to 0-9.

Glenbower’s win gave them a bit of breathing space as theyby-passed a few rounds until the quarter final stage of thecompetition. Here once again it was Erin’s Own who await-ed. The Caherlag side came through the back door beatingDungourney 1-7 to 0-9 in round two and then edging out FrO’Neill’s 2-5 to 0-10 in the next phase to set up another rematch.

Glenbower Rovers who qualified for the East Cork Final

What transpired in that eventual contest at Midleton in midMay was in total contrast to what had gone before. Erin’sOwn who had recent experience in the county intermediategrade were swept aside on a 3-10 to 0-3 score line.

Substitute Andy Walshe found the Erin’s Own net justbefore half time, to set up a 1-5 to 0-2 lead, but the windwould be in the faces of the Killeagh team in the secondperiod. As it emerged the expected rally by the oppositionnever materialised as firstly Stephen Murphy and then MarkLanders found the net to leave the issue conclusive at theend of the hour.

Then it was to Castlemartyr last week and the 3-4 to 1-9 suc-cess over Carrigtwohill.

Glenbower Rovers selector Noel Long takes up the story.“It was a game that we could very easily have lost. We werenine points up at one stage and seemed to be coasting home, but our lads seemed to get tired and Carrig’ roared back intothe match. They had a few chances in the end but missedthem, so we were lucky to survive. As a result afterwards inthe dressing room, we were all conscious that a big step upis needed to win the final”.

Goals by Sean Long, Stephen Murphy and David Kelleherwere the decisive scores as Glenbower made it into the finalof a competition they have never won in their history.

“It would mean the world to us if we could come throughadmits Noel Long. “To win would be a great achievementand we would be determined to drive on to make a bid forcounty honours”.

Challenge games against Aglish and Nemo Rangers havebeen lined up for this week, but with there are also hurlingcommitments for a panel almost of which are involved inboth codes. A senior league fixture is on the agenda onThursday evening and the club is also taking part in the AllIreland ‘Sevens’ in Dublin over the coming weekend.

“We will train again probably twice next week and then waitand see who comes through form the other semi. Being hon-est I don’t think it will be any handicap for the ultimate win-ners to be playing just three days later. Their confidencewill be up and they will on a high going into the decider”,concluded Noel Long.

Glenbower Rovers are captained by Joe Deane, MarkLanders lines out at full forward, whilst West Cork nativesConor and Timmy Murphy and stalwart defender PadraigMcCarthy are amongst the other key players in the first fif-teen. Kevin O’Driscoll coaches the team with Liam Kelly,Denis Barry, James Fogarty and Declan Fogarty joiningNoel Long on the backroom team.

On the other side of the draw the record shows that Cloynescored an eye catching 0-19 in beating Bride Rovers firsttime out whilst Lisgoold were two point winners (0-11 to 1-6) over Cobh. Both sides then came out on the right side oftheir respective tight quarter final encounters. Cloyne beatMidleton 0-11 to 1-6, Lisgoold who haven’t played in thefootball championship since mid May ousted Castlemartyr1-9 to 0-10. Since then Lisgoold have been very muchfocused on the junior ‘A’ hurling championship, where theyreached the semi final before losing a replay to Sarsfield’s.

The outstanding semi final between Cloyne and Lisgoold isfixed for Thursday September 10th at 7.30pm in Ballynoewith the final in Youghal on Sunday evening September13th – 6pm.

Killeagh GAA News

There was no winner of the lotto. The numbers were 29,33,35. Thejackpot now stands at 3,600 euro.

Congratulations to our Junior A Footballers on reaching the JuniorA football final. We were probably labelled with the favourites tagbut to be fair to Carrigtohill they really put it up to us and therewas never much to separate the sides during the duration of thegame. But goals win games and we got 3. Midways through thesecond half we were in front by 8 points but Carrigtohill nevergave up and chipped away at our lead to leave a nail biting finishand 1 point the difference. The final score was Killeagh 3-5Carrigtohill 1-10. The final is now fixed for the 13th of Septemberin Youghal at 6pm.

Our 200 club membership is at an advanced stage. More newmembers are welcome and the new draws will start in the comingweeks.

We Killeagh GAA Club would like to express our deepest sympa-thies to the Crowley and McCarthy families on their recentbereavements. May they rest in peace.

Heritage WeekThis as you know is Heritage Week in County Waterford and anumber of interesting events are taking place throughout the coun-ty. Mention of the word 'heritage' immediately sends connotationsof historical events and buildings, but there is much more to ourheritage than that. Everything around us, from the various speciesof birds and animals, both domestic and wild, flora and fauna, ourtraditions, religion, cultures and even family heirlooms etc are allparts of our heritage. So also are many of our recipes and cookinghabits as is the custom of 'white-washing'.Some need preserving, some we need to be reminded of and somewe celebrate now and then - The Pattern Festival being a primeexample of rich heritage that many, many generations have givento our tradition steeped parish.Ardmore Heritage Day.The weather played spoilsport in a big way for Ardmore Heritageday and led to the cancellation of some of the guided walks -Sunday was hardly a day for The Cliff Walk. However, JamesQuain's lecture on Landlordism in Ardmore went ahead in AnTobar and where a fine crowd attended and were enthralled by thetales.Ardmore Whale Watch. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Groupconducted a whale watch at Ram Head on Sunday last as part ofthe Waterford Heritage Week. Approximately 50 people attendedthe watch over the 3 hour period but nothing was spotted. TheWhale Watch Group have a number of sites around the countrywhich they monitor on a regular, monthly basis. Fin Whales, thesecond biggest animal on the planet, have been the most commonspecies spotted from Ardmore, with sightings recorded severaltimes last year, but none so far this year. Porpoises too have beenspotted as have several species of Dolphin. So keep the eyes openwhen you're on the The Cliff Walk and if you do spot something, log on to The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group website.Local Derby Victory. Ardmore ground out victory in a close andvery sporting Intermediate hurling championship game againstneighbours, Clashmore on Friday last week. Then last Friday webeat Brickey Rangers to advance to the Western semi-finals.Despite clocking up 20 points this was not an impressive showingby our boys and they will have to improve the performance if theyare to advance. On Saturday at Fraher Field, 5 pm, our Senior Footballers take oncounty champions, Nire, in their final qualifier and we need adraw here to be sure of qualification for the quarter finals, although a narrow loss and other favourable results could also putus through.Wedding Bells.Congratulations to popular local building contractor, DamienLenane and his bride Therese McCarthy who were wed at theweekend and best wishes to Ardmore player, Paul Gleeson andJacqui Ferncombe, who tie the knot in Ardmore on Friday next.Busy Summer.Despite all the doom and gloom about the economy and the weath-er etc. Ardmore still managed to have a pretty good summer.Overall, the weather was mixed but we certainly got the best of itand escaped much of the rain. Visitor-wise, the village wasextremely busy, with huge crowds coming every weekend and theweekdays very busy as well. This was probably due to a combination of factors; The Cliff

Hotel is certainly a major attraction and the Pattern Festival drewhuge numbers and overall the resort maintains a very high profileacross the entire media, local, national and international profilingour assets from heritage to holidays, fine food and fair strands,céad mile fáilte agus ceoil. One must also add the profile ourIntercounty hurlers give Ardmore, as invariably all match com-mentators mention the 'beautiful sea-side resort'.Barbeque at Round Tower Hotel. Well done to the Tidy Townssub-committee who organised the barbeque at The Round TowerHotel on Friday night. It really was a brilliant night with 'Samson'providing the gig in the garden and entertaining all comers with

music and song, even after dark. Kids had a ball in the late nightbouncing castle and the food served was delicious. A lot of hardwork then by an enterprising crew of chefs, waiters and waitress-es and a few managers as well! Thomas Healy, Connie and GlynnMoloney, Gillian Dwyer, Paul Knight and Marion Power were themain organisers of an event that is sure to be repeated.Progressive 45. Last week, one of our newest players, TessMansfield, joined up with Pat O'Connor to head the poll and thisweek she teamed up with another veteran, Nell Foley, to againsweep the boards with 9 games. Nora May O'Neill and Ann Bakerkept the women in control with an 8 game second place and JohnKeevers and Gerry O'Brien, along with Willie and Brian Keaneshared third spot on 7 games. Then this week she made it three wins in a row, Tess Mansfieldhas swept the boards, this time with Nell Foley as partner again, they clocked up 9 games to share top spot with Anne McCarthyand Ann Halley. John Keevers and Gerry O'Brien were in thirdspot. The earlier 9 pm start worked well as it gave us time for areal rubber after the progressive, won again by James Foley,Thomas Troy and Brian Keane. In hindsight, we'd have been bet-ter off to go away home for ourselves!Players are reminded that we will start at the earlier time of 9 pmfrom now on.Breavement.We extend our sympathy to the Quain family on the death ofMarie Quain, who passed to her eternal reward last week. Marie, who was one of our oldest citizens, was a wonderful individualand was much loved by one and all. Ar dheis Dé go raimh sí.Last week we said farewell to that wonderful 'mother of theparish', Kitty Veale. Kitty, a native of Millstreet County Corkcame to Ardmore as District Nurse in 1956 and from then until herretirement served the whole area, Ardmore, Grange, Clashmore,Kinsalebeg and Aglish. She was held in the highest esteem byeverybody and was present through all the joys and tribulationswith every family. She was as her son Michael so aptly summedup, nurse, mother, nana, counsellor to everyone. She was also agreat friend to Ardmore GAA Club, whose players she lookedafter for years.Fittingly, present and former staff members of Ardmore Health

Centre formed a Guard of Honour at her funeral and the ArdmoreGAA Club lined both sides of the Main Street and carried her cof-fin shoulder high through the street. We offer our sincere sympathy to her family Michael, Seamus,Harry and Catherine and to their spouses and children. Ar dheisDé go raibh sí.Back to School. It's that time of year again when our young peo-ple pack away the summer fun and go about their various studies. This weekend some of our youngsters took a mighty first step tovarious universities throughout Ireland and indeed the UK. Manymay never really be resident in Ardmore again. For some more, it's back to secondary school and a massive stepfor those going away to Youghal or Dungarvan for the very firsttime to start secondary school. Then there's the small ones whotoddle off to Grange or Ardmore school for the very first time. Agiant step and for some families a giant wrench as its their firstexperience of separation. To them all we say best wishes and goodluck.Macra na Feirme. Best of luck to William Keane, Foxhall, whois off to Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar to represent Waterford inThe Young Farmer of the Year competition. William and the other25 competitors, will be grilled on the theories and practicalities ofthe whole range of modern farming, in this most prestigious ofevents. Of course we hope William goes all the way, but in sayingthat, we must be mindful of the fact that no Waterford representa-tive has ever even reached the last six.Camper Van Club. Ardmore GAA Club welcomed the MunsterCamper Van Club to it's grounds over the weekend and over 30families had a most enjoyable weekend at the Club grounds, where they were based. Group barbeques were the order of theweekend and , despite heavy rain on Sunday morning, they stillmanaged the barbeque and outdoor breakfast. The group used theClubhouse by night where they had some music and a sing-song.

Clashmore/Kinsalebeg Juvenile GAA. U-12 Football. The lads played Ardmore last Saturday week, inthe Semi Final. This was a great match with all the players andsubs playing their part. We finally overcame Ardmore and won bysix points in the end. The players looked really well in their new set of jerseys whichwere sponsored by Brendan O'Sullivan, Electrician. The clubwould like to thank Brendan and Jane for their very kind generos-ity U-16 Hurling. Our hurling season ended on a poor note lastSaturday when we were well beaten by St. Pats in the WesternFinal in Fraher Field. While playing without a full panel due to holidays, and while wehad players injured, who must be complimented for still playing,we held St. Pats well in the first half and were two points up at halftime. However, two unfortunate goals in the second half turned thetide in St. Pats favour and they then went on to add to their scoreto win well in the end. Congratulations to St. Pats on winning theWestern and County Finals . Although we have no silver ware to show for the year, the ladsshould be proud of contesting the two finals. This is a greatachievement for such a small club with very few lads in this groupand not many of them up on the age. Our thanks must go to all the mentors who have given of their timeand have worked very hard with this set of lads during the last sixmonths. U-16 Football. The championship is about to start and trainingtakes place every week from now on. U-12 Football. The final of the football was played in Fraher Fieldlast Saturday week . It was a great achievement to reach the finalfor our young lads and they put in a great effort throughout the fullmatch, but unfortunately we lost to a very strong physical Affaneside on the day. Thanks to Timmy O'Keeffe, who despite his busyschedule, put in a lot of work with this side, as did all the mentors. Our thanks also must go to all the parents for their support duringthe year. Lets hope next year will have a better result. Many of our players are taking part in different tournamentspresently so good luck to all. The Tony Forristal Tournament. This is being played in Mt SionWaterford , Offaly and Galway are in the same group. RyanO'Sullivan and Paul O'Connor are playing in this set of matches. The Sonny Walsh Tournament. This is being played at the new DeLa Salle grounds Limerick, Kilkenny, Clare and Waterford are inthis group. . All matches are of 40 minutes duration. EdmondO'Halloran is playing in this tournament. May he restin peace. The voices we loved to listen to are silent The choirs of angles must have been recruiting recently as twolocal gentlemen both of whom were blessed with wonderful voic-es were taken unexpectedly to their eternal reward, within hoursof each other. On Wednesday July 22nd with great sadness wereceived news that Con Ryan of Tallow had died, followed by sadnews next day that Micheal O Neill had died suddenly at his homein Muckridge Youghal. Both were men of exceptional talent andthroughout their lives performed at various events both locally andnationally. Con Ryan the butcher from Tallow was son of the great TenorFrank Ryan, Con was never afraid to sing a song or two as he wentabout his regular deliveries as the people around Clashmore andPiltown can fondly recall. Rose MotherwayLate of 7 Churchview, Ballymacoda

6th September 2006

God looked around his garden and saw an empty space,

He looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face,

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest,

God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.

God knew you were in pain and a cure was not to be,

So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered come to me.

With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away,

Although we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay.

It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone,

For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

Sadly missed by your husband Pat, sons, daughters, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, greatgrandchil-

Horgan Collection goes on display at Youghal LibraryAn important archive of historical photographs of Youghal andsurrounding areas has been donated to Cork County Library andArts Service and is being made accessible to the public for the firsttime in Youghal Library. This important collection of nearly nine hundred photographs wasmade by various members of the Horgan family who for manyyears ran a successful photographic business in Youghal and whoalso operated one of the cinemas in the town. Reaching back to the1890's, the Horgan Collection is a unique and invaluable collec-tion of photographs which records the landscape, streetscape andsocial history of Youghal into the twentieth centurySpeaking to a very large gathering of people in Youghal Library atthe launch of the collection on Thursday evening, Cork CountyLibrarian, Ruth Flanagan thanked the members of the Horganfamily for their generosity in making the entire collection avail-able to the public through the Library Service. She noted that theHorgan collection is a priceless historical document that depictsthe town of Youghal, the Blackwater river, Ardmore and manyother areas and its importance for its representation of the socialand commercial life in the area, through vivid images of maritime,

agricultural, leisure and tourism activities. Jim Horgan talked about the beginnings of the Horgan familyinvolvement in photography and film and showed a series ofimages giving an overview of the extent of the collection. FrankMills, Liam and Michael Coveney also spoke about the maritimeheritage of Youghal and the Blackwater using photographs fromthe collection to illustrate their talks. In accepting this donation Cork County Council have preservedand conserved all of the images in the collection. These imageshave now been digitally recorded and will in due course be avail-able for members of the public to view in Youghal Library The collection is launched as part of National Heritage week cel-ebrations. During the week a selection of photographic prints willbe on view as well as continuous slideshow of digitised images ona public access computer. For further information contact 021 546499 or email [email protected]
