The Rosary: A Powerful Weapon!

Pope Francis has asked all Catholics to pray the rosary daily during the month of October, asking Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel to intercede for the protection of the Church in a moment of “spiritual turbulence.” The Holy Father affirmed that prayer is the weapon against the Great Accuser who ‘goes around the world seeking to accuse.’ Only prayer can defeat him. The Russian mystics and the great saints of all the traditions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God.

According to pious tradition, the Rosary was given to Saint Dominic in an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the year 1214. From then onward, it became an established devotion for the Dominicans, the religious order founded by Saint Dominic with the title, "Order of Preachers."

The English word "rosary" comes from the Latin rosarium, meaning "crown of roses" or "garland of roses," named for the string of beads used to count the prayers which compose the Rosary. A standard fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, based on long-kept custom, was established by the Pope Pius V, a Dominican, in the 16th century, grouping the mysteries in 3 sets: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II suggested a new set of 5 mysteries which he named "Luminous," bringing the total number of mysteries to twenty.

The Rosary has been featured in the writings of many Roman Catholic Church figures from saints to popes and continues to be mentioned in reported Marian apparitions. In his book, Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort emphasized that the Rosary should be prayed with attention, devotion, and reverence, with reflective pauses between the prayers. During the early half of the 20th century, the Rosary became a mainstay of prayer for families, often gathering around the supper-table after a family meal to pray the Rosary as a family, on their knees, with the members of the family taking turns leading the prayers.

October is the "month of the Holy Rosary." In our Parish, the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 AM Mondays thru Saturdays each day of October, beginning Tuesday - October 1.

Will you pray the Rosary in your own home during October? What a great way to bring the family together in an easy prayer for all ages. What a great way to honor Our Blessed Mother who always leads us to her Son. What a great way to reflect on the greatest and most important mysteries of our Faith, strengthening what we believe and bringing us closer to the One we believe: Jesus Christ. What a grace-filled way to help heal the wounds of our Church and of our world. Pray the Rosary ... please! It's a powerful weapon. God bless you! Father Frank

First Friday Confessions ... will be heard in the confessionals located in Our Lady's Chapel on First Friday - October 1 from 6 PM to 7 PM. Two priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, celebrating the Lord's merciful forgiveness and setting souls free from the burden and bondage of sin.

First Friday - October 1: A Holy Hour

of Reparation …

will be held in our Church on First Friday - October 1 from 7 PM to 8 PM. The purpose of this Holy Hour in the presence of the Most Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed on our main Altar will

be to pray in reparation to the Lord Jesus for all sins committed against his Most Sacred Body and Blood; for all sacrileges; for all Holy Communions received unworthily; and for all the sins committed by priests throughout the

world. Every month, between 40 and 50 folks join Father Phillip in this most sacred, serious, and needed hour of prayer ... will you join this month? All are most welcome!

Saint Philip Parish Evangelization Initiative

Part 2: Lower the Nets

Do you have a family member, friend, co-worker, school-mate who is not Catholic? Do you have someone in your life who may have fallen away from the Church or may simply be open to learning more about our Catholic faith?

Who is God calling you to invite into his Church?

In the Gospel of Luke, Simon (Peter) and his fellow fishermen had worked hard all night at fishing but had caught nothing. After encountering Jesus and listening to his preaching, Jesus invites the experienced and probably exhausted fishermen to put out into deep water the "lower the nets for a catch." Skeptical but obedient, the nets are lowered and are filled to the breaking point with an abundance of fish. Obedience to the word of Jesus and following his command leads to abundance. This weekend, we will submit the names of those whom God is calling us to pray for, that the Holy Spirit will move their hearts and minds to enter into our Program of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) which begins on Wednesday - October 6 at 7 PM in Mercy Hall, located in the McNamara Building (next to the left side of our Church building). This weekend (September 25 and 26) parishioners will submit the names of all those we will be praying for particularly that God's grace will call them to "come and see" what our Catholic faith is all about and to enter into a deep and abiding friendship with God, as disciples of Jesus, animated and empowered by the Holy Spirit. And Jesus said to them: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men"

Saint Philip Parish Evangelization Initiative Part 3: Come and See!

Do you have a family member, friend, co-worker, school-mate who is not Catholic? Do you have someone in your life who may have fallen away from the Church or may simply be open to learning more about our Catholic faith?

Who is God calling you to invite into his Church?

The final phase of our Saint Philip Parish Evangelization Initiative is the invitation to attend a weekend Mass at Saint Philip's next weekend (Saturday or Sunday - October 2 or 3) and then to come to the introductory and informational session on Wednesday - October 6 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM in Mercy Hall, located on the first floor of the McNamara Building (the brick building on the left side of our Church building).

And Jesus said to them: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19).

A “Life Chain” … will be formed in front of our Church on Putnam Pike from 2 PM to 3 PM on Sunday - October 3. This is a peaceful and powerful demonstration of our commitment to the value and dignity of every human life … born and unborn … and the constant teaching and doctrine of our Church that every human life must be protected and respected … from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. All are welcome to participate in the

“life chain.” Gather at 1:45 PM under the canopy at the Church's front doors to pick up a sign, participate in an opening prayer, and receive some tips about keeping the demonstration peaceful and charitable. This is a great activity for the entire family! Join us in "chain for life" on Sunday - October 3. This event is entirely outdoors and participants will stand apart of one another, lining the sidewalks on Putnam Pike in front of our Church and School buildings.

Rest In Peace: Mrs. Rosalina Manicap

The mother of Sister Marizza Manicap, F.A.S., one of our Franciscan Sisters, has died in the Philippines after a brief illness. Sister's grief is compounded by the fact that she was not able to be present at her mother's bedside as she lay dying nor was the family able to have a traditional wake or even a Funeral Mass and proper burial due to COVID restrictions and lockdowns in place in the Philippines. Please lift up Sister Marizza in your prayers as together we pray for Sister's consolation and for her mother's eternal rest and peace. Should you wish to send a sympathy card or Spiritual Bouquet Mass card to Sister, please address it to: Sister Marizza Manicap, F.A.S., Saint Philip Convent, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville, Rhode Island 02828.

Traveling Rosary Congress

Our area will be hosting our second annual Diocesan Traveling Rosary Congress from October 2- 8, 2021. The Rosary Congress is a weeklong period of intense, around the clock prayer consisting of Perpetual Adoration and Hourly Rosary, offered in a spirit of reparation. We are joining with

other dioceses across the nation to pray for the healing of our Church, our families, and our nation (see rosarycongressusa.org). As the Church suffers from persecution from within and without, as family life is attacked more viciously than ever before, and as life continues to be

threatened in its most vulnerable stages, we need this unified prayer now more than ever. The Rosary Congress will travel to a different parish for each 24-hour period from October 2 - 8, 2021. Our parish will host on Friday, October 8th at 9 AM. Adoration begins after morning Mass and ends at 8 AM., Saturday, October 9th with the closing Mass. To sign up for an hour of adoration please use the link provided on

our parish’s website, or contact Joan Bessette at [email protected] .

A Blessing of Animals and All Pets ... in honor of the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi will take place at 5:30 PM on Monday - October 4. Gather on the lawn behind the Church near the statue of the Risen Christ. All animals and pets (on their best behavior, of course) are welcome for the ceremony which will last about 10 minutes, so please don't be late!
