Vancouver, B.C.: Will Hyundai ever drop the ball?

The problem with riding a winning streak – especially one this long – is that sooner or later it has to end.

The Korean manufacturer is now No. 1 in Canada for passenger car sales and in fourth spot overall, following 32 consecutive months of sales growth.

So where to from here?In its top-sellers – Accent, Elantra

and Sonata – Hyundai has showcased its “fluidic sculpture” design language, proving that upscale styling and what was once considered premium content need not break the bank.

So in the spirit of creating yet another example of affordable luxury, the company has released a vehicle that has pushed the boundaries even further –in both form and function.

The Hyundai Veloster is a compact, three-door blend of coupe and hatchback that first appeared at the 2007 Seoul Auto Show. The company is targeting 20-somethings with this vehicle – in other words “Generation Y,” who they believe will soon eclipse the spending power of their boomer parents, and by 2020 will command 40 per cent of the new car market.

That being said, I do appreciate of what this car brings to the market.

Hyundai VelosterContinued from Pg. B3

of standard content that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome dual center exhaust outlet, seven-inch high-res touchscreen with rearview camera, proximity key with pushbutton start and heated front seats.

Most of these are the kind of features I’d expect in a car costing $30K-plus, but Hyundai has lately been full of surprises. Like heated rear seats in a $20K Elantra.

Also part of the entry package are power windows, power heated mirrors, air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, Bluetooth, AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 six-speaker audio system with iPod, USB and auxiliary jacks, along with Gracenote Technologies (iPod album cover art and advanced voice recognition.

If you want an automatic, there’s a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission (DCT) available for another $1,400, bringing the price to $20,399.

The DCT comes with paddle shifters (and hill-start assist), and from my brief time with both manual and automatic versions, will admit that both are a pleasure to work. I typically favour a manual in smaller cars, but the DCT shifted smoothly and briskly, whether I chose my own gears or not.

The powerplant for all Velosters is the new Gamma four cylinder, a DOHC, 16-valve 1.6-litre engine with dual continuously variable valve timing and GDI (gasoline direct injection).

It delivers 138 hp and 123 lb/ft of torque, and in a car that weighs around 1,200 kilograms, provides a pretty good power-to-weight ratio.

CR-Z hybrid’s rating of 6.5/5.3/6.0.Inside, this car does not disappoint, with

nice mix of soft-touch materials, chrome accents, faux metallic finishes and, in Tech Package trim ($22,499), double-stitched faux leather in the seats, door inserts and armrest.

The standard seven-inch touchscreen can be personalized with your own welcome image and sounds, and the rearview display is of a useful size for those of us over 40 who have trouble with the postage-stamp displays that some manufacturers install in the rearview mirror.

Passenger volume is best-in-class among compact coupes, and the same could be said of its 440-litre cargo volume if not for the CR-Z at 711 litres. Keep in mind, however, that the Honda doesn’t have a rear seat. And you can drop the Veloster’s second row for enough room to throw in a mountain bike.

Standard safety includes vehicle stability management, electronic stability control/traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, six airbags, and with the DCT you get Hillstart assist.

If you still want more stuff, an extra $3,500 will get you the Tech Package which includes panoramic sunroof, navigation, an upgraded eight-speaker audio system with subwoofer, alloy pedals, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, automatic headlamps and 18-inch alloys with painted inserts.

The latter feature was a nice touch (I love the inserts), but I’m not a big fan of replacing 18-inch rubber when the time comes. As for the remaining content, it’s nice – and a good value if you had to price everything separately – but I could live quite happily with the base vehicle.

Hyundai has built a couple of halo cars in the $40K-$54K Genesis Sedan and the $63K-plus Equus. They move relatively few compared to their volume sellers, but demonstrate the company’s capability, and reposition the brand higher in the minds of today’s savvy carbuyer.

The Veloster takes this a step further, proving that a car manufacturer can deliver big on both content and style, without charging a fortune. And the quality – with its sturdy feel, hushed cabin and doors that close with a solid ‘thunk’ – appears to be top drawer.

I believe Hyundai will sell a pile of these cars, once buyers catch wind of the value proposition. Hyundai expects to bring in around 800 Velosters for the rest of 2011. I hope that’s enough.

Standard on all Velosters is a seven-inch, high-resolution touchscreen with rearview camera.

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster includes an abundance of soft-touch materials, chrome rings and faux-metallic finishes.

But the Veloster performs not unlike the Accent, which shares the same engine. First gear with the manual is a bit tall, so that you really have to milk it when accelerating hard. Still, that’s apparently not an issue for Gen Y’ers.

And probably not much of one many drivers when you consider the Veloster’s fuel economy, which at 7.2/4.9/6.2 litres/100 km (manual) approaches the

Got a cool ride?Be our next Driver of the Week! Email us at [email protected]

Many wonder what Santa does when he’s not delivering toys at the holidays or overseeing the elves’ tireless efforts at the North Pole.

This weekend, you’ll likely find him and Mrs. Claus (also known as Bob and Cherie) with their friends in the local collector car scene at the Vancouver Island Mustang Association’s Toy Run, this Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

When the warm weather simply won’t accommodate the sleigh, a 1956 Chevrolet Bel-Air convertible is their car of choice, offering both an excellent touring option to lead the Toy Run – from the University of Victoria to Beaver Lake Park – and plenty of cargo room for all those toys that will be collected for the Salvation Army’s holiday campaign.

The two purchased this classic ride after reading The Hot One, Chevrolet 1955 to 1957 and favourite memories in the car include Vancouver Island camping trips and “cruising the dub.”

The car’s “personality?” “She’s pretty and likes lots of attention,” says Bob, who most enjoys the Chevy’s convertible feature and the connections the two have made while pursuing their interest in classic cars. “We have made some really nice friends because of our involvement in the collector car hobby.”

For those who would like to join this Sunday’s festivities, all car enthusiasts are invited to meet at the University of Victoria’s parking lot #10 at 9:30 a.m. The Toy Run will depart at 10 a.m. for a one-hour cruise, then finishing at the Beaver Lake Picnic Site.

Salvation Army representatives will meet the drivers at the park to collect the toys and cash donations for their Christmas programs.

This year, the celebratory mood will get a little help from the 100.3 Q’s “Boom Box,” while a barbecue will offer post-drive hot dogs and juice by donation.

An open event, all vehicles are welcome as long as drivers have a new toy or cash donation to contribute.

The cruise route, about 30 km in all, travels through Gordon Head to Cordova Bay, then through West Saanich and back to Beaver Lake Park.

With a possible top speed of 200 km/h, the Ford Fiesta ST Concept shown at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show is part of Ford’s worldwide performance vehicle strategy.

Ford reveals Fiesta St concept at FrankfurtMetroland Media

Carguide Magazine

Ford won’t say if it is coming to Canada but it did reveal its vision for a future high-performance Fiesta ST at last week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Ford Fiesta ST Concept signals the next step in Ford Motor Company’s global performance vehicle strategy and hints at how a future Fiesta ST

performance model might look when it joins the Focus ST in the global Ford small car portfolio.

The Fiesta ST Concept combines eye-catching, muscular and sporty styling with a dynamic sports chassis and a high-performance powertrain capable of delivering impressive fuel economy with low CO2 emissions.

Like Ford’s World Rally Championship contender, the Fiesta RS

WRC, Fiesta ST Concept uses a 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine to deliver performance every bit as breathtaking as the vehicle’s striking design.

For the Fiesta ST Concept, the 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost engine achieves a target power output of around 180 hp enough to propel the concept vehicle from 0-100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

A top speed exceeding 220 km/h is possible.

Metroland MediaCarguide Magazine

Kia has set a new Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid gasoline vehicle after driving through all 48 adjoining U.S. states.

Drivers Wayne Gerdes and Chris Bernius successfully piloted a factory-standard 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid sedan through a 12,712 km route across America and achieved an incredible average fuel consumption of 3.64L/100 km, beating the car’s official EPA highway fuel consumption figure by 61.37 per cent.

Kia’s 48-state challenge was completed in 14 days driving an average of 907 kilometres per day.

The Optima Hybrid used just over 5.5 tanks of gasoline to complete the route,

recording an average distance of 2 282 kilometres between fill-ups.

The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car,” which is a new category created by

Guinness World Records. In order to qualify for a

new record, the Kia Optima Hybrid was required to achieve a minimum of 4.5L/100 km, which the fuel-sipping Optima Hybrid exceeded by 23 per cent.

Green InitiativeKia optima Hybrid sets new world record for fuel economy

The Morgan Motor Company and a consortium of British technology specialists are developing a new, high-performance electric sportscar prototype.

The Morgan+E program will deliver two engineering concept vehicles early in 2012.

Both will be based on a development of the proven Aero Supersport’s aluminum chassis with the 4.8-litre BMW V8 replaced by a new derivative of Zytek’s high power-density electric powertrain driving through a conventional manual gearbox.

Zytek’s first experience with a high-performance electric sportscar was back in 1997 when it converted a Lotus Elise to electric drive.

The prototype Morgan will use a new derivative of Zytek’s proven 70kW (94 hp) electric powertrain, which is already supplied to US vehicle manufacturers.

The compact, lightweight unit will be installed in the transmission tunnel and will require just three additional connections (cooling water, high voltage electrics and low voltage electrics).

Power will come from a Li-Ion battery pack integrated into the vehicle’s aluminum structure, offering a lightweight and powerful solution with safety systems already proven in production applications.

Kia recently set a new Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption of 3.64L/100 km.

many items left in the back like strollers, golf clubs, construction materials, tools, etc. can affect vehicle performance and make some repairs more difficult to do. Sometimes we have to remove these items to get to the failed part, perform a specific repair like a wheel alignment, or even put it on a lift!”

Save your mechanic valuable time by cleaning out your car before you visit the repair shop.

Mistake #4: Making yourself unavailable – Good repair shops are extremely busy and coordinating all the jobs to maximize the day can be difficult. If the mechanic or service writer is unable to contact you to authorize

a repair, the vehicle sits. Make sure the contact numbers you leave are correct and you respond promptly.

Remember, a cooperative, friendly and respectful attitude is usually reciprocated.

Mistake #5: Hovering over the mechanic – Virtually every mechanic interviewed by AutoMD.com expressed concern for customers hovering while they work. “I once had a customer who watched me like a hawk and

followed my every move,” said another 20-year mechanic. “If I bent down, he bent down, if I went right, he went right. Finally, I went to the other side of the car and when he peered over, I humorously said ‘peek-a-boo’.” I don’t mind customers watching, but it’s extremely distracting and can actually inhibit me from doing my job properly.”

While it’s appropriate to stand with your mechanic while explaining the problem, it’s inappropriate, distracting and sometimes downright dangerous to hover while he or she works. Stand back and let your mechanic do the job.

– PRNewswire

Service & Accessories5 mistakes to avoid on your next trip to the repair shop inmotion.vicnews.com

InMotionGreaterVICtOrIa

Wondering how to keep a good car repair experience from turning into a bad one? Consider these pointers from a recent AutoMD.com interview with independent repair shop mechanics and its team of in-house auto repair experts.

Mistake #1: Failing to communicate properly – The better you’re able to communicate your car’s symptoms, the easier it is for the mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem. Write down what you hear, feel, see, and smell before you arrive and keep a log of exactly when the symptoms occur (when braking or driving over a certain speed, for example). Also, note the location and frequency of the symptoms, and if any repairs were done on the vehicle recently. Many times a problem is related to the last repair.

Mistake #2: Setting unrealistic expectations – According to one mechanic with more than 20 years of experience, “I’ve had customers schedule a vehicle inspection on the same day they’re leaving on a family trip. If we find the car needs brakes, we try to accommodate them the best we can but some customers expect us to fix their car in an hour, not realizing how long the job actually takes or the other customers we’re also trying to accommodate.”

Even if it’s a relatively quick and easy repair job, understand your car may be at the end of a long list of cars needing repairs. Ask how long the job may take and be prepared to have a ride to and from the shop. Be mindful that your mechanic may need extra time to get the job done, and to get it done right.

Mistake #3: Dropping off a dirty or loaded vehicle – Contrary to popular belief, most mechanics like to work in a clean environment, and that includes the vehicle they’re working on. Clean your car before taking it to the shop. Your mechanic will appreciate it, and you never know, it may affect the service you receive. “Cars and trucks with

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1’s supercharged 6.2-litre engine is rated at 580 hp and 556 lb/ft of torque making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 surpasses the advertised power of the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1’s 427 cubic-inch big block by more than 150 hp while meeting modern emissions requirements.

And, the new ZL1 is backed by General Motors’ five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The all-aluminum LSA supercharged V-8 is part of GM’s legendary small-block engine family. For a solid foundation, the engine’s lower end uses six-bolt main bearing caps that clamp and lock in the forged steel crankshaft

to the deep-skirt block. Its 1.9-litre Roots-style blower uses an

efficient four-lob rotor set and compact intercooler to deliver boosted air into the high-flow cylinder heads.

The ZL1 will be offered with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The Tremec TR-6060 “MG9” manual features 30 percent more torque capacity than in the Camaro SS. The higher torque capacity results from a strengthened output shaft, high-strength rear housing, and additional roller bearing.

Similarly, the Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic has been strengthened to handle the torque and horsepower produced by the 6.2L supercharged small block.

The Camaro ZL1 will feature the third-generation of Magnetic Ride Control.
