As Jesus Did………So also AICUF did!AICUF Constitution Sec.7 in Preamble states that “As members of a Christian movement, we draw ourinspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, in our attempt to build, in solidarity with men andwomen of various faiths, a new society and university in tune with the needs and aspiration of oppressedmasses”. Have we lived up to this statement of purpose written some twenty five years ago? ‘Yes’ was thecall when I tried to capsule the activities of AICUF as presented by the States during the 25th National Council.Mt 12.33 ‘To have a good fruit you must have a healthy tree; if you have a poor tree, you will have a bad

Distinguished teachers, distinguished faculty members, my dearfriends, and the most respectable Reverend and the spirit behindthe AICUF movement! I would like to offer my humble respect andwarm greetings to all of you as I stand before you to deliver thiskeynote address. I was bit nervous when the NFT asked me todeliver the Key Note Address! I was very happy to come, standbefore you to talk, sit and reflect along with you on several socialconcerns. I always cherish the notion of coming and spendingtime with young leaders like you. It is with this spirit I have cometoday. Coming to AICUF is always a learning experience for me!

This is one of the most important reasons about my relationshipwith the AICUF and secondly regarding the keynote address, Iwould still be very happy to come as one of the panel members.May be you still have to find the better person to deliver a keynoteaddress and still needed to find a better person than me. Thereare many who are doing important work and deeply connectedwith the issues, working in the grassroots, working with realities. So this was the only difference about the delivering the keynoteaddress and not about coming to speak here.

In the keynote address, I have to connect the past with thefuture at the present context! When I was a student, people oftenasked us ‘why are you studying history?’ We were then not able togive a convincing answer. Past is something that has no relevancefor most of us, which has no meaning but if you talk about thepast, it is about relationship. That is the very beautiful answer Ireceived while visiting a place where indigenous people were living- Indigenous communities in the North America. A person asked‘how old are you’ to a very elderly man. This man said “if you wantto know my biological age, it is 78. If you want to know the age of

mine by the ties with thehumanity, then I am million yearsold and he said that he wascompletely rooted in the history. We can’t afford to uprootourselves from the past andhistory connects you to the past. The history of the world is thehistory of humanity not as thatof the history of India, history ofPakistan, history of Sri lanka, orhistory of another continent oranother country. So, when youhave this kind of perspectiveabout the past then we becomemore responsible.

We become moreresponsible and start looking athistory both creatively, positivelyand critically. By critically I meancritically we need to understandthe history and we have to lookat the enormity or magnitude ofwhat human beings canachieve. We find in our ownhistory how people wereexploited by vested interest, how people were made to suffer

due reasons like caste, class, religion, race and colour. The present is constructed by our understanding of our past.

But the future is developed by our actions of our present but thisseem like I have faith in the wrong side of the karma theory. In acountry like India, when a person is born disabled or with the certainkind of thing and it was very easy for people to say that it due tokarma.

People were discriminated on several basis. One such basiswas colour. It was rampant in the western world. For instance, noone would have imagined a Black President for the United States. But it has happened. History tells us how this happened. Historytells the success story of people’s movement in the annihilation ofdivisive forces like colour, race and caste. Rights movements haveplayed a bigger role in this regard.

Understanding the past, understand how you are living andunderstanding the land you live in, understanding the cultures, customs. This is an important part of our learning, and you haveto recognize the fact. There is an element of lack of creativity andlack of social responsibility in understanding of our past. A societythat does not read its past keeps repeating the mistakes of thepast. In a sense one of the biggest attribution is that once whoread history reads and planned future well, that is the very importantkey component to the social systems. One who understands anddevelops in fact is considered to be wiser. Therefore I would adviceI would always ask you and appeal to you never undermine thepast. This has both the good and the bad. How do you indentifythe bad, for instance? History will tell you exactly.

What are the hurdles and what are the constructive worksthat takes place in the society? When you are reading the past

which connected with the pastyou have to work with thepresent. You have to work withthe present then you can bringabout the change. That is therelationship between the past, present and future. The past, present and future is very deeplyconnected. You find the clock inthis room.

Look at the clock in theroom. It goes on ticking andticking. To know the time, thepresent, you need to refer backto ‘hand’ where it was, otherwise, you can’t tell thecurrent time. If the time is 11.30,what does it indicate? It ismeaningless. It becomesmeaning full only when thecurrent t ime is read inconjunction with the previoustime. Likewise, we need to readand reread history tounderstand the how injusticewas caused and how the samewas remedied by socialmovements like AICUF andother revolutionaries.

It takes up any other mattersthat might require attention withinthe framework of the Constitution. It meets at least once a yearpreferably in August. Its term ofoffice is one year.

The year 2013 is the 25th year ofNational Council of Before 1989,CCM meetings were commencedbut later in the year 1989 after the3rd National Convention when theNew Constitution was passed, therelevance of National council wasalso mentioned. Having a Council

gives the movement a federal setup; it makes it more democratic tofunction. The states functionautonomously and at the end of theyear during the council meetingstate leaders along with theaccompaniment of advisers cometo understand one another in themovement, to analyse itsinvolvement, activities and alsochallenges one another in theirideological clarity and experiments.Every council emerged as a uniqueexperience. All the 25 councils havevarious reasons, issues, motivesand orientations behind and withthem. All the states come together tolearn, share, understand and createnetwork of strong united force forthe movement to grow stronger.Council is like a platform that theNational level coordination provides

so that the states come and makethe proceedings possible. It

is like when we light a sparkthe fire will automaticallyburn to let the light spread. It is the united force of thestates that makes the

movement strong. National isnot a parallel movement, it is a place

10

Page 13: Sept 2013 rally

September 2013 Rally

where the unifying force of themovement is stored and preservedin form of documents, pictures, reports and sharing. With the members we rejoice andregister feelings and stories of theyear that went by. We leave ourpresence when we sign theregistration sheets. It gives aplatform to each one to DEBATEand also argue with open mind andheart for the sake of the movement. It provides a better clarity in theirstate activities in the coming future.

With new members it is tobe renewed of new experiences, ideas and creativity. Each year thecouncil sees new student memberswho go back to their states withrenewed mind-sets to challengethemselves and stand against theunjust society.

With the members, werepresent the oneness of all thestates during the councilproceedings, unity that themembers share, glorious historyand also it rejoices the studentcentrality of the movement which isthe most important pillar of .

With the members, wereplace the conventional thoughtprocess with a new one, traditionswith a new ones, conventionalmethods and practices withinnovation and creativity and theformer National Team with the newNational Team during the council.

With the members, werevisit and rebuild the past throughthe nourishment of the newmembers with the historicalimportance of and the betterunderstanding of the Constitution offor its democratic growth in the stateand national levels. We build astrong framework of through theNT members in their states whoform the pillar on which the Nationalis based. It rebuilds the networkingand collaborative spirit of themovement.

When the national teamstarted the preparation for thecouncil during the last two NTmeetings, the years’ experiencewas still fresh in our minds. Itnurtured the team members to beopen to the various changes that

could be brought about in . TheTeam, after a lot of discussion cameup with an idea that the themeshould be related to the presentscenario of both in the National andstates levels/ commissions. Afterthe successful completion of lasttwo meetings, the team came upwith the theme “New challenges to: Revisit the past, Rebuild thefuture”. This theme was chosen notonly keeping in mind the future ofthe student community but also themovement at large. We have cometo a stage when the burning firewithin us wants to question and finda solution to the stagnant status ofthe movement. THE 24th Nationalcouncil with the theme “Let’sChange Our Attitudes and BreakOur Bondages to Rise & Lead” wasa start to our thinking process as towhat could be done to drift back tothe age of student activism. Thusto break our bondages we need tohave the openness to freely revisitthe past strategies and rebuild thefuture plans for the betterment ofthe movement.

Challenges for the CommissionThe Commission has no proper structure (Membership)

The Commission is limited to conduct meetings except to Leadership Programme and the summer CampThere are no proper decision making and execution by commission as we do not have proper membership

The Commission is weak in few states. Few states do not represent the national Dalit Commission. The Leadership programme is attended by general AICUFers but not by the elected members or representatives

of the state.

My interaction with the National started with the National Convention in the year 2010 during which I was apart of the incoming National team. Like most of the AICUFers who enter National and without even knowingthe duties or relation which revolves around I too entered. Luckily I was not the only member who was not soaware, but my Convenor too was with me. We were told to organize the National Mid Council as a part of ourfirst activity. Slowly my involvement started and so did my development. Next year I again attended thecouncil as the SFT and outing NT.The year was a magical one I would say because of my one year as NT I learned a lot and could contribute too.Until I came to the council last year I was not aware of the fact that I will be the NFT the same year which Ithought would be my last year. This is the 4th Council that I will attend as a student member and probably it’smy last one too. Thus I would like to share my work for the year in brief along with some observations andreflections about the movement. This whole year has been a bundle of experience and self-awareness for me.I did realize that learning will never come to an end so will the thirst for knowledge.Advisors and Animators programme (ISI, Bangalore)

My observations about different states and areas of :a) The rich history that has and the Ideology which we follow is something to be cherishedb) Every state is unique with their issues and strategies to work with the studentsc) Activities like Post Card Campaign for Dalit rights, Flame of truth campaign, black day etc were

positively responded to by all the states and according to my calculations we have sent 2000 postcards in about 3 months. Kudos to all the states who made it successful

d) Some states have always willingly provided information as and when requirede) NTs have got a great exposure this year as they have been given the opportunity to organize

various programmes and were also a part of the exposure trips. They overcame all barriers likelanguage, distance, money, educational institutions, demotivation and mind frames to make theyear a successful one for all of us. The change I could notice was beyond my thoughts.

f) All the member states have helped to improve the Rally subscription list as well as helped us toupdate the address list too.

47

Page 50: Sept 2013 rally

September 2013 Rally

g) The quality and quantity of articles we received this year did not make us feel that we need to worryfor Rally. The themes were thought after a lot of debate and reasoning

h) Students have been an active support system individually for making all attempts successful.i) I have learned to stand up and answer for what is right and wrong. I deeply regret for all the

mistakes that I left unnoticed.j) Personally the amount of experience and knowledge I have gained will never be washed away from

me.k) There is no parallel movement or body called as Nationals but it is only the states and their initiative

that makes the National strong. Every NT is a pillar and the structure that unifies them is theNational Centre.

l) is a movement and not an organization. People from time to time did try to make it look like anorganization for whatever intentions have failed in their attempts.

m) Our commissions need to be thought for again. We are just restricted to 2 meetings in a year. Inthat case may I question how are we catering to the needs of having such commission? Clashes, misunderstanding between students and coordinators leading to wrong choice should be avoidedand fair chance should be given to all members regardless of any differentiation.

n) Why have we become so terrified to boldly stand and protest for some cause? Some areas dinteven respond when an opportunity was created to react.

o) It would be nice if people who have exposure for at least a year should only be given a chance tobe a part of the Nationals. As by the time people understand the movement half the year is almostover.

p) Some states are really facing serious issues between the advisor and student exco. Such issuesshould be taken care of immediately as and when it is noticed else like students of MP all states willget ready to revolt.

q) It does not take more than two years to shut down or kill a well-functioning movement in a stater) Politics and ganging up is unavoidable at all circumstances and bodies.

At the end I would like to thank each and every member in the house who have helped me build myconfidence and also made all my efforts successful. Truly “we are born into an unjust society” and abiding byit is the options AICUFers have taken for they are determined not to leave it as they have found it.
