Background on Sepsis in Children

Sepsis is a leading cause of death for children in the U.S., takingmore young lives than pediatric cancer. More than 18 children dieeach day in the U.S. and many of those lives could be saved withimproved public awareness of sepsis as a medical emergency andexpanded health provider education.

Some Facts:

Every day more than 200 children are diagnosed with severe sepsisand of those who survive 40% will suffer ongoing injuries which mayinclude amputations, and moderate to severe cognitive challenges.

Mortality rates are high; 6,800 children die from sepsis each year

Half of sepsis survivors are readmitted for additional care aftersurviving sepsis

38 percent of sepsis survivors will sustain a lifelong disability as aresult of sepsis with more than 500 patients requiring amputationseach year

Globally, sepsis is the leading cause of death of babies and smallchildren taking more than 3 million lives each year

The cost of caring for children with sepsis in hospitals is estimated tobe $4.8 billion in the US in 2005

Methodology

MethodologyThe survey was conducted online within the United States by Radius Global Market Research on behalf of Sepsis Alliance between June 19-22, among 1,010 adults 18+ in the United States with at least one child under 18 in the household. The results were weighted to the US census for age, gender and region. Surveys were conducted in English.

Executive Summary

With sepsis being so wide spread it is surprising that nearly 40% (38%) ofparents have never heard of sepsis or only just know the name.

While 77% of parents know the word sepsis, only 28% can actually identifythe common signs of sepsis.

Alarmingly, many parents are not adequately aware of the global scopeand potential complications of sepsis:

• 41% of parents think children can only get sepsis if they are already in thehospital.

• Nearly half (42%) of parents believe there are no long-term effects on childrenafter having sepsis.

• Only half of parents (51%) agree that sepsis is the number 1 killer of children inthe world.

The awareness level (never heard/just know the name) of sepsis is lowest amonglower income and lower educated parents:

• Nearly half (49%) of lower income parents (less than $50,000) have never heardof sepsis or just know the name, while the majority of high income parents (morethan $100,000) are at least very aware of sepsis (55%)

• The majority (55%) of those with a high school education or less are more likelyto have never heard or just know the name sepsis while nearly a majority (49%)with post grad degrees are at least very aware of sepsis.
