Towards a Greener Planet - Initiatives on Sustainable Green Power Generation

The growing energy crunch is a great risk & barrier for India's development. Clean & green technology is necessary to ensure India's energy security & environmental safety.

OGPL has been generating power by using renewable energy resources since 2007. However, increasing shortage of biomass is felt as competing industries use at rising pace the urban green matter as fuel. Hence OGPL has started exploring alternate energy crops with the aim of benefiting farmers as well and it chose annual/seasonal crops for better availability of biomass. We found Cumbu Napier (CN4) species as the most promising species in short term coppice under irrigated conditions and Leuceanaleucacephala under rain fed condition through contract farming in surplus/underutilised land with farmers in neighbouring areas.

OGPL plans to set up decentralized biomass banks in rural backward areas for sustainable supply chain of biomass to power plants and green environment through cultivation of short term High Density Coppicing Energy crops.

In short we would like to set up green power villages.

In this front, OGPL has realized that growing Biomass in a large scale is possible only

When the Society takes this concept forward.

When there is real time benefit to the farmers by growing trees.

When it is accepted as doable by the farmer community.

As a first step at Sempatty, Dindugul District Buy back agreement system has been introduced in 5 acres of farmers' field for the cultivation of Cumbu Napier.

Orient Green Power Company Limited

To promote organic farming and sustainability in agriculture, OGPL initiated the Farmer's awareness program at Sempatty on Application of Fly Ash to increase yield and in part of soil conservation with Reddiar Chatram Sustainable Agriculture Producer Company Ltd. (A Farmer's producer company) & M S Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Capacity Additions

We have successfully commissioned 12.8 MW (8X1.6 MW) WTG of GE make at Koodangulam, Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu in August 2012.

CDM Project Registration

The 10 MW Biomass based power plant by Orient Green Power Company Limited, at Narsinghpur District, Madhya Pradesh and 8 MW biomass based power plant by SM Environmental Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Orient Green Power Company Limited at Baran District, Rajasthan have been successfully registered with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as a Clean Development Mechanism Project.

Reaping the REC benefits

OGPL being an organisation caring for the environment, has started reaping benefits by way of revenue from Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) and Certified Emission Reduction (CERs).

In the Second Quarter 2012-13, so far OGPL has traded 62747 RECs from Wind and Biomass put together.

OGPL's subsidiaries - Shriram Powergen Limited, Dindigul and Shriram Non-Conventional Energy Limited, Pattukkottai - Bundled Clean Development Mechanism Project registered under UNFCCC has received 75627 CERs successfully for the first time.

Hamon Shriram Cottrell

Performance bettered

Hamon has introduced an ABS plastic formwork (framework)

at the Gail Pata Cooling Tower Work, for the first time ever. The

advantage of this is its ability to provide 100 pours as

compared to the average 8-10 pours obtained from a standard

timber shuttering. This introduction has been much

appreciated by EIL /GAIL.

Yet another feather in our hat

Hamon was awarded the contract of installing Pultruded

Cooling Towers at the 6x660MW Ultra Mega Power Project of

Reliance Infra, located in Sasan, Madhya Pradesh. The total

number of towers is 12, with 16 cells each and a capacity of

492800 cum of water per tower. The scope of work included

Design, Engineering, Manufacture, Supply, Civil Construction,

Erection, Commissioning & Performance Testing of the

Cooling Towers.

Successful completions

One of Hamon's most prestigious projects was with BHEL,

where the company was awarded a contract for Design,

Manufacturing, Detail Engineering, Supply, Civil Construction,

Installation, Commissioning & Performance Guarantee Testing

of one Induced Draft RCC Counter flow for the Captive Power

Plant at Bharat Oman Refinery Limited, Bina, Madhya Pradesh.

The total circulating water flow rate is 36,900 cu mtr/hr. The

total number of cells is 12, and the water flow rate for each cell

is 3075 cu mtr/hr.

The commissioning of the plant is completed and the plant has

been in operation from December 2010.

Hamon successfully completed an Induced Draft counter flow

cooling tower with film type fill of Hamon design for Aarti

Steels, Cuttack. The contract was successfully executed &

commissioned and handed over on 28 May 2010 and is

in operation.

A pioneering effort

M/s. Hinduja National Power Corporation Limited

(HNPCL) has awarded a contract to M/s. Shriram EPC

Limited for Supply and Erection of GRP (Glass Fibre

Reinforced Plastic) piping system for their Power Plant (2

x 520 MW - Sea Water Intake Outfall System) coming up at

Vizag. The manufacturing and installation of the 3.6 mtr

dia (3600 mm) GRP pipe for a total length of 3.2 Kms will

be carried out by M/s. Shriram SEPL Composites P Ltd.,

against a total order value of ̀ 22.50 Crores.

It is the first time in the Country that GRP pressure pipe of

this dimension has been manufactured. A pipe of this size

will require specialized equipments and machinery for

manufacturing, testing, handling and transportation. The

Company has already made pipes of up to 3 mtrs dia

(3000 mm), not only of Circular shape but also Non

Circular shapes like Oval and Horse Shoe shape pipes and

are amongst the very few in the country who are capable

of handling pressure pipes of such large diameters.
