As we head into Fall, we remember - and pay tribute to - those who have been most affected by the attack on our country. Two photo-journalists from San Francisco document their experience in New York City in In My View: Photo Memories of 9/11 (Sunday, September 11 at 8:00pm). We also look at the devastating effects of war on our most vulnerable - the children who live through it, and ways in which we can help them move forward in a positive way in September's Children (Sunday, September 11 at 8:30pm)Be sure to check out our highlights on pages 4 and 5. We have other great programming which cover immigration, healthcare, the labor movement and wrongful imprisonment.Happy watching!

Most people don't think about singing when they think about revolution. But song was the weapon of choice when Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation. Follow this inspiring account of one nation's dramatic rebirth. It is the story of humankind's irrepressible drive for freedom and self-determination. It is the story of David defeating Goliath without even a slingshot.

September 11, 2001 was the most tragic and bloodiest day on American soil since our Civil War. Two photo-journalists from San Francisco Bay Area newspapers are sent on assignment to NYC and tell their powerful stories of this tragic event through pictures from Ground Zero

Children who witness war and conflict grow up far too quickly and often with debilitating side effects. Discover the effect of war and terrorism on children, and get valuable insights into alleviating their emotional trauma. The searing events of 9/11 are brought to life the through the eyes of students at a NYC elementary school closest to Ground Zero on 9/11. Also travel to war zones including Afghanistan, Israel and Gaza, where teachers, parents and mental health workers are using innovative techniques to treat the emotional havoc war and violence inflict on children.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer John Kaplan was at the top of his world. Never before ill, he was used to documenting the life ordeals of others. But when suddenly diagnosed with a rare case of potentially deadly Lymphoma, he turned the lens on himself, and his remarkable imagery takes us beyond his despair and through his powerful belief that he can, and must, beat it.

In 1991, Rick Walker was wrongly convicted of murder and spent the next 12 years in prison. Follow the story of his exoneration and the political struggle to secure financial compensation for him from the state of California. Mr. Walker himself presents detailed conversations with key players in his case and the partisan budget battle over reimbursing him. Interviewees include Alison Tucher, the lawyer who proved his innocence; George Kennedy, the Santa Clara Country D.A. at the time and Joe Simitian, the state assemblyman who fought to pass the bill that gave Walker $100 for each day of his incarceration.

This focus on the critical healthcare disparity facing the Hispanic community shines a light on the day-to-day struggles of Latinos trying to navigate the healthcare system where language barriers, cultural misunder-standings and the lack of health insurance leave many feeling helpless. Includes interviews with medical experts and national leaders who stress the importance of preventive care, committing to personal lifestyle changes and taking an active role in family health care.

In Detroit Michigan during the great depression, Dave Moore was a hungry young black man without work. In 1932 when over three thouand people protested against the Ford Motor Company to appeal for jobs, Dave Moore marched with them and witnessed the brutality that caused five deaths. Dave Moore never forgot the Hunger March experiences that inspired him to help organize the workers of the auto industry. He held many positions in the UAW and other organizations, and at age 96, Mr. Moore continued to organize, educate and advocate for workers r ights until he died on November 1, 2009.

Follow the touching story of one family's experience gaining entry into the United States. Ramon and Aurora Chavez, an elderly couple living in Jalisco, Mexico, have not seen their children in 16 years. In order to visit, they must secure a tourist visa, an expensive and difficult proposition. Previous attempts proved unsuccessful but the Chavezes decide to try again after years of postponement. Representatives from the U.S. Consulate demystify the visa process and illuminate the reasons why they approve some applications - and deny others.

Bandleader and composer Paquito D’Rivera (pictured) guides us among the composers of his Cuban homeland – Mario Bauza, Arturo ‘Chico’ O’Farrill, Ernesto Duarte and more. He brings Latin percussion with Horacio Hernandez (drums), Richard Padron (guitar) and Pedro Martinez (percussion) with the five-beat rhythm to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Joey DeFrancesco pumps out the Philly sound on his Hammond B-3, propelled by guitarist Pat Martino and the legendary Heath Brothers. The players cover tunes from that city’s jazz icons: Benny Golson (I Remember Clifford), Lee Morgan (The Sidewinder) and John Coltrane (Naima).

Swinging and singing: both describe the unmistakable sound of Harry "Sweets" Edison (pictured), one of the most important stylists in the history of jazz trumpet. Sweets plays with a simplicity born of sophisticated artistry. It propelled him to the Count Basie Band, which he joined in 1937, thereafter becoming one of its most frequently featured soloists. This program, produced just before his death, celebrates Edison's spare style that blends subtle humor, impeccable timing, and the sweetly muted tone that gave him his nickname.

For nearly 50 years, Betty Carter (pictured) was an irrepressible and incomparable practitioner of jazz vocal tradition. She was a pure jazz singer whose strong musical style and instrument-like voice was keenly original and distinct. She was also a fiercely dedicated and demanding bandleader who helped hone the skills of gifted young musicians like Cyrus Chestnut and Jacky Terrasin. This program explores Carter's many sides and talents as a song stylist, composer, a bandleader, and teacher.

Burton's (pictured) longtime duet partner Chick Corea, his discovery Julian Lage, and a dozen other players celebrate with a golden anniversary concert for the "divine (as the College President calls him) vibraphonist. Also in September, JazzSet celebrates 10 years with its divine host, Dee Dee Bridgewater, who sings.

Warren Vache (pictured) is a remarkable horn player, with astounding chops and a warm tone whether he's playing trumpet, flugelhorn, or cornet. He has developed his own unique and thoroughly modern style, but Vache's sense of jazz heritage is strong. He's known as a master performer of traditional jazz. Drummer Glenn Davis and bassist Gary Mazzaroppi join McPartland and Vache on Basin Street Blues and Louisiana.

Jazz giant John Coltrane would have been 85 this week. His widow, Alice Coltrane (pictured) performed with her husband's band in his final years, and is also one of the few jazz harpistsand a composer in her own right. On this 1982 Piano Jazz, Alice Coltrane performs her tunes, Transfiguration and One for the Father, and joins McPartland for Giant Steps.

Five highly accomplished young players survived a year of ongoing competition. One will emerge with the Cole Porter Fellowship and $50,000. To conclude the rigorous finals, on this night at The Athenaeum in Indianapolis, each young man accompanies the great Dee Dee Bridgewater. High stakes produce spell-binding music.

The KCSM Fall Fund Drive begins on September 6th and we’re working like crazy to make it as fun, informative and happening as possible. To that end we’ve lined up some great programming. The highlights include a tribute to John Coltrane in honor of the 85th anniversary of his birth, and to Joni Mitchell on the 40th anniversary of the release of her historic album “Blue”.

The celebration of the life, artistry and music of John Coltrane takes place the weekend of September 10th. Born September 23rd in 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, John Coltrane was one of the leading tenor saxophonists of all time. His sound, his compositions, and his commitment to his art are unparalleled. Although he died in New York on July 17, 1967, Coltrane continues to be a major influence in the world of jazz.

To bring the Coltrane story to life, KCSM will feature the award-winning radio documentary, “How Long Has Trane Been Gone?”, by independent producer Steve Rowland. Rowland is also the producer of the amazing “Miles Davis Radio Project” – a Jazz 91 listener favorite. In addition to airing the documentary, we’ll be offering an array of Coltrane CD’s and even a cool black T-shirt with Coltrane’s image as thank you gifts for listeners who contribute during the Fund Drive.

The following weekend, on Sunday, September 18th, we’ll be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” album. Mitchell, one of the most influential songwriters of all time, has had an enormous impact on popular music. Her background as a painter and a lover of jazz infuses her music. Her musical style, whether she’s on the guitar or at the piano, is a unique blend of harmonic landscapes. She worked closely with jazz musicians including Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and on a 1979 record released after his death, Charles Mingus.

If that weren’t enough, we’ll be giving shouts out to B.B. King, Chick Corea, Tony Bennett, and more. It’s all a part of the fun in fun(d) drive. Don’t forget to tell your friends to get on board the Jazz 91 ColTrane!

11:30pIDEASINACTIONWITHJIMGLASSMANNet Neutrality: Who Should Control Access To The Internet?Over the past decade, the Internet has expanded enor-mously, changing the lives of Americans. Unlike other forms of communication, like telephones and television, the Internet has expanded largely without regula-tion. But that may be changing. As the use videos increases, the companies that provide the pipelines for Internet access may be running out of space. Many people and businesses worry that these companies will begin to limit their access to the Internet in a way it’s never been limited before. How to resolve this issue is a high-stakes Washington question, with billions of dollars and some very important principles – like free speech and free enterprise - at stake. (R 9/15 at 5:30a)
