Council of Catholic Women Ministry of Care for September

Queen of Peace

Dear members of Blessed Sacrament family;

Greetings of peace, joy and hope to each one of you!

On September 5th, we remembered Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Since she is a saint of our times and I had the privilege of meeting her on several occasions and working with the Sisters of her religious order, let me share with you a few thoughts on her life and spirituality.

Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the current capital of the Republic of Macedonia in Europe. At baptism she was given the name Agnes. Hers was a very devout catholic family. At the age of eight, Agnes lost her father. In the aftermath of her father’s death, Agnes became very close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity.

At the age of 12 she first felt a calling to a religious life. She became a religious sister a few years later. In 1946, she felt a ‘call within a call’ to dedicate herself totally to the poorest and sickest people in the slums of Calcutta, India. “Come, be my light”, with these words, the Lord Jesus drew Mother Teresa to Himself in a special way, immersing her deep into the mystery of His hidden and sacred presence in the poorest of the poor. Her spirituality can be summed up in her own words:

The fruit of Silence is Prayer – As each one of us experiences a deep longing for God in our heart, we will feel the need to create that atmosphere of silence in our life that will enable us to be one with Him and communicate intimately with Him in prayer.

The fruit of Prayer is Faith – Our faith is deepened in prayer and our heart is purified so that we are able to perceive God’s presence everywhere and in everyone, especially the poorest and the weakest.

The fruit of Faith is Love – By a daily encounter in faith with God, in our hearts, in the Eucharist, in our brothers and sisters, we come to experience more and more the depth of His love for us.

The fruit of Love is Service – Like Mary at the visitation, we go out in haste to serve and bring Jesus to others.

The fruit of Service is Peace – The deeper our commitment to reach out to the most vulnerable in society, the greater will be the peace we experience in our hearts.

Mother Teresa’s life has been a living proof of how a Christian life lived to the full can be a true light for all the world. Her smiling pres-ence has been a beacon of God’s light radiating to all corners of the earth, bringing Joy, Peace, Understanding and Unity among all peo-ple of the most different creeds and cultures, drawing them closer to God and to each other. In our troubled times, her life and spirituality continue to shine as an example of Christian discipleship.

In Christ, Fr. Simon Manjooran
