UM SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM NEWSLETTER Summer 2016 Issue: Summer 2016 Release Date: August 15, 2016 2016 UM SEP COHORT PAINTING THE ROCK IN THIS ISSUE Hello and happy summer SEP family and friends. Several newsworthy things have happened since we last wrote to you. Welcome Cohort 31, welcome to the SEP family! The 31 st Cohort was amazing and excelled at so many great things this summer. We welcomed Cohort 31 on May 31 st in the great SEP tradition – an evening reception at Pizza House. After six site visits, two community service events, 18 final presentations, one 400 meter race, and 70 one-on-one meetings, this cohort became another for the history books. First Cohort as Director First SEP summer complete! I was humbled every day by the passion our SEP students exhibited day in and out as they experienced health care and learned more about addressing health disparities. I want to thank the team for the teamwork. My arrival also marked the beginning of a full- time program director. Mr. Chris Clarke comes to us from Chicago, and is doing a great job carrying the operational weight of SEP. We brought in a great incoming HMP, Ms. Leslie Cerpa (SEP ’15, HMP ‘18), to support the residential component of the program. Also, I want to thank two more team members that carried the load up until the start of the summer. Shekinah Singletery (SEP ’13, HMP 16’) and Erin Lichtenstein did excellent work during the school year, and especially bringing us all to the finish line with the 30 th Anniversary events. Thank You Dr. L After 44 years at the University of Michigan as a student, faculty member, researcher, and SEP Director for 30 of those years, Dr. L retired with well-deserved fanfare. I cannot express how much his advice, mentorship, and availability meant to my career path. Now as a faculty member in HMP, I learn more and more each day about his efforts and legacy as a fixture in the department. Dr. Lichtenstein, thank you for being you since we met in 1998. Your branded personality helped to shape my career. It serves as an energizing foundation for my role as SEP Faculty Director. Your great career as a faculty member is also a shinning example of putting your research where your passion lies. I strive to be the change as well. UM SEP Cohort 31 This year, UM SEP invited 22 students to participate in the 2016 Summer Enrichment Program as the 31 st cohort. Page 2 SEP 2016 Farewell Dinner UM Vice Provost Robert Sellers provided a well-received address “A Student’s Call to Action” to our students, preceptors, and partners.
