groups causes often all of them to strand."

Tasmania is the only Australian state where mass stranding of whales and dolphins regu-

larly occur. But it is seen to be the biggest mass stranding in more than a decade. In

2009 around 200 whales beached themselves off the coast of Tasmania.

The regional manager north-west with Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service, Nic Deka,

told reporters on Tuesday "We've rescued about 25 at the present time and escorted

them out the channel and out to sea and crews are continuing to work, so that number

will increase before we get to the end of the day."

Welcome Solar Cycle 25

Written By : Dr.Anumeha Chaturvedi

CYCLE- the sequence of regularly occur-

ring events.Few known cycles-water cy-

cle, mineral cycles, etc. The uncommon

cycle with interesting facts is the SOLAR

CYCLE.

Sun is a bright shinning, huge gas ball

moving constantly. This movement of the

gases produces a magnetic field and the

sun behaves as an electromagnetic bar

with north and south poles. The magnetic field produced gets tangled or stretched and

causes switching of the poles i.e. north pole becomes south and vice versa in a span of

11 years (8-14years).

SUNSPOTS- The Magnetic field produced in sun results in the formation of dark spots on

the sun's surface, limiting the energy transfer and reduced surface temperature. Solar

activity is the measure of the sun's magnetic field. The SUNSPOTS helps in tracking the

solar cycle by alterations in the sun's activity.

The Solar cycle has two major stages- Solar Maximum (most sunspots) and Solar Mini-

mum (least sunspots) and the time from one minimum to the next is called a Solar Cycle.

The beginning of a solar cycle is called Solar Minimum, solar activity is less so there are

fewer sunspots but as the activity increases the number of sunspots also increases

called Solar Maximum. As the activities proceed the number of sunspots decreases,

reaching the stage Solar Minimum marking the beginning of a new cycle.

The numbering of the solar cycle started in 1755, and Today lets welcome the new solar

cycle 25. This 25th cycle started in December 2019 but the sun is a variable star, it

takes about 9-10 months to confirm the beginning of this new cycle- SOLAR CYCLE 25.

AFFECTS OF SOLAR CYCLE:

The poles reversal because of gaseous move-

ment on the sun's surface produces current and

the current sheet. Earth revolves around the sun

hence, affects weather.

The current sheet absorbs the cosmic rays pro-

duced by high energy particles in space and de-

flects them from entering thus, protects Astro-

nauts and space crafts.

Ejection of Plasma (charged gases) from the sun, produces solar flares and winds affect-

ing radio communication and space weather.

If there is low solar activity, fewer sunspots resulting in cold temperatures and vice-

versa.

Although, it is believed that the strength of the

solar cycle is decreasing over the period but it

can be still concluded that the effect of SUN will

always be there in our life.

WILDFIRES-A CAUSE OF WORRY--SPEEDING

UP GLOBAL WARMING OR THE OTHER WAY

ROUND.

A series of out of control fires broke out across

California in August. Almost 14,000 firemen

have been sent to drench the fires. This fire

has destroyed huge sections of land.

Inhabitants of San Francisco and a few other

areas over the US' West Coast got up to orange

skies. Numerous parts were covered in orange to rust-colored skies.

Solid breezes kept on carrying smoke and debris

from the rapidly spreading fires toward the

northern parts of California. The winds known

as SANTA ANA winds are a naturally occurring

phenomenon that regularly peaks during the au-

tumn. Such breezes can assist fires in develop-

ing quickly. They spread rapidly and turn out to

be fatal.

The smoke and debris get significantly thicker

near the rapidly spreading fires. It can remove

the daylight totally, making it resemble the dead

of night,

As per NASA, the skies are an aftereffect of smoke particles. This blocks certain wave-

lengths from the sun. The smoke particles from the flames permit longer wavelength

colours like red and orange to pass. It obstructs the short-wavelength colours of yellow,

blue, and green. These longer wavelengths give the sky a red or orange colored appear-

ance. The same happens during sunrise and sunset.

What decides the shade of the sky is the manner in which our eye gets light. It gets it from

the sun through the atmosphere. When all light effectively goes through a clear atmos-

phere then all the colours which make up the spectrum are identified by our eye as 'white

light.

The important factors on why California and other areas of the world are encountering so

many wildfires year after year are.

•the environmental change brought about by the consumption of non-renewable energy

sources.

•poor fire management.

In a period of pandemic and catastrophic events, orange skies are one more sign 2020 is

to be associated with.

Well, the IPL is here. It started

on 19th September and will go

on till 8th November, in Dubai.

We finally have some sporting

events being telecasted. A

break from the monotony and

a ray of hope for sports lovers.

Although Tennis and a few

other sporting events had re-

sumed a few weeks back. In

India, Cricket being the most

popularly watched sport, the

excitement has built up only

now.

Well, so it has been a while; and it is quite evident from the extra ounces of weight most cricket-

ers have put on, around their usually flat tummies. But haven't we all put on a little, with all that

delicious home-cooked food we have all been eating, the last couple of months? In my humble

opinion, it makes the cricketers look humane. That said, all's good until it doesn't impact perfor-

mances. After all, we love our IPL masala packed.

So far, Deccan Chargers (DC) and Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH), have lost the one match they

played; and Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kings 11 Punjab (KXIP), and

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have won one and lost one match each. From what we can

see, controversies that follow each IPL match, have already begun. Viraat Kohli, the captain of

RCB, has been fined Rs. 12 lakh on Thursday for maintaining a slow over-rate against the King

XI Punjab. The minimum-over rate refers to the minimum number of overs to be completed within

an hour. 14.11 overs need to be completed in an hour in an IPL match that is not delayed. Else, it

becomes a breach of conduct.

Looking at the brighter side of things,

KL Rahul, the captain of Kings 11 Punjab, went on to score 132 runs and was adjudged to be the

Player of the Match. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record to become the fastest Indian bats-

man to reach 2,000 IPL runs. The KXIP skipper also registered the highest score by an Indian in

an IPL game, having smashed 14 boundaries and seven sixes.
