A Novel Method of AccountingTraditionally, as the month of Elul begins

and the high holidays approach, Jews around the world review their deeds of the past year, the good and the bad, make an accounting of everything they have done, and repent. There are many ways to accomplish this task, but there is something we can all learn from Moshe the innkeeper who did so in an un-usual and very inspiring way.

One year, the Ba’al Shem Tov was ap-proached by his talmidim, who asked for their Rebbe’s advice in repenting before the approach of the new year. The Ba’al Shem Tov instructed them to visit a certain inn-keeper named Moshe and unobtrusively observe his actions. His talmidim rented a room at Moshe’s inn and waited to see what the Ba’al Shem Tov had meant. It was mid-night before Rosh Hashana that they got the answer to their question. The sky was already dark and most people were asleep when they heard someone moving around in the main room. They peeked through a crack in the doorway and watched as Moshe the innkeep-er took down two large notebooks from the shelf. He sat down at the table, lit a candle, and began reading aloud from one notebook.

As he read, it became clear to the talmidim that this was no ordinary notebook. It was a diary in which the innkeeper had recorded all the sins he had committed over the past year. His sins were not of the startlingly griev-ous variety; one day, he had spoken a word of lashon hara; on another, he had overslept and missed the time for shacharis; on a third day, he had forgotten to give money for tzed-dakah. Nevertheless, only several pages into the diary, Moshe was crying like a baby. For over an hour, Moshe read and wept, read and wept, until he came to the last page.

Then, the innkeeper reached for the sec-ond book, a diary as well. But in this one, he had recorded all the troubles and misfor-tunes that had befallen him over the past year. One day, as Moshe was walking through the streets, he was attacked by a gang of peas-ants; on another day, his child became ill;

on another occasion, he could not procure enough firewood, and his family slept in the freezing cold through several winter nights. There was also the day their cow died, and the children went without milk until they could save up enough to buy another one.

When he finished reading the second note-book, Moshe looked up to the heavens and said: “So you see, dear Father in heaven, I have sinned against You. Last year, I repent-ed and promised to fulfill your command-ments, but I repeatedly succumbed to my evil inclination. But last year I also prayed and begged You for a year of health and prosper-ity, and I trusted in You that it would indeed be this way.

“Dear Father, tomorrow is Rosh Hashana, when everyone forgives and is forgiven. Let us put the past behind us. I didn’t always do what was asked of me and You didn’t always do what was asked of You. I forgive You and You forgive me, and we’ll call it even.”

Well, that’s 2/3 right; yes penguins are awesome, yes they are capable of drinking salt water, but no, they can’t ingest salt water. They are able to drink salt water because their supraorbital gland filters excess salt from the blood stream, which is then secreted in a concentrated fluid from the nasal passages. This mechanism was designed to allow penguins to live in the coldest places, like the North and South Pole; both of which are completely surrounded by salt water and usually freeze any fresh water they come into contact with.

This is a bit of a patchke but not much, and presents very elegantly as a side dish with the main course of any Yom Tov meal.First Layer:1 ½ cups flour1 Tbs. sugar½ tsp. salt½ cup oil2 tbs. waterInstructions: Mix all of the above ingredients and divide into two 9-inch round baking pans.Bake on 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.Second Layer: 3 sweet potatoes 1 tsp. honey ½ cup sugar 3 eggs3 tsp. mayonnaise½ tsp. vanilla extractInstructions: Cook the sweet potatoes and mash them in a separate bowl. Mix the rest of the ingredients separately. Combine with potatoes and blend. Pour half into each of the round pans over first layer.Topping:1 cup flour½ cup brown sugar1 stick margarineInstructions: Mix all of the above ingredients until crumbly. Layer crumbs on top of sweet potatoes.Bake on 350 degrees for 1 hour.

I sit down to write this letter a mere two months since I first contacted Kollel Chatzos with my request: That you should learn in the merit of two of my relatives habocher… two terrific ,נ"י.……and habocher נ"י..older boys that were still seeking their bashert.
