Editors Letter... I
hope everyone enjoyed the summer break, I was away for the first part of the holidays but the sun was shining
brightly when we returned!
Due to holidays, we missed the Auckley
Show, but I have heard so much about it. Sounds like our annual show was a great success once more. Neil Woodward has
mention in his report in this months Arrow, that there is a great need for more help, hopefully he will find it as It would be
a real shame for such a well attended local event to end.
St Saviours church in Auckley are starting a new Sunday school from September at 11am. My children both attend Sunday
school in Finningley at present and absolutely love it. They get involved in all sorts as well as learning about the bible. A club well worth joining!
Kilham Hall Community Centre in Branton have been trying to start up a parent and
toddler group without success. If you know of anyone who would be interested in starting a group, please contact the
committee as soon as possible. Contact details on ‘what's on’ page.
The deadline for the October issue will be Wednesday 21st September. The October issue will be distributed from Friday 30th
September.
Best Wishes

Cantley With Branton WI The strawberry Tea was very enjoyable on July 2nd.
Visitors were welcome and we had a chance to
chat to our new and old members. The July
meeting was a talk about Winthrop Park Gardens
in Wickersley. A very interesting presentation on
the story of how it was set up as a charity, well
worth a visit and a cup of tea. The August meeting
was a talk about the South Yorkshire helicopter
operations unit.

Cantley With Branton Parish Council
Provision of a Ball Wall and Sport Surface
A ball wall with a tarmac area has now been completed and arrangements are being made for a basket ball net to be attached to the wall for use with the tarmac surface. It is hoped that young people (particularly those who attended a parish council meeting to request
some recreational provision for older children) will enjoy the new facility.
Support for the Fun Day on 18 June 2011
Congratulations to Emma, Lyndsey and Rachel for organizing the successful Fun Day which raised over £1,800 for two charities. The parish council was pleased to be able to support the event by making the recreation ground available free of charge and by funding the
necessary insurance cover. It is hoped that a similar event may take place in the future.
Creation of a Dog Control Order for KIlham Lane Recreation Ground Whilst the parish council has always had a policy not to allow dogs to be brought onto the
recreation ground it is felt that the policy should be legally enforceable. It is therefore proposed to create a Dog Control Order to ensure this. Anyone who wishes to comment on the proposal is asked to notify the Clerk to the Council, C/o 24 Ellers Lane Auckley,
Doncaster, DN9 3JF in writing by 4 October 2011. The parish council will consider any representations received at the meeting on 5 October with a view to determining a date that the Order will become effective.
Keeping Our Parish Clean, Tidy and Safe Please remember that dog fouling on pavements and grassed areas creates a serious health
and safety risk particularly to children. Dog owners are asked to ensure that if a dog fouls any public area the deposit is collected, wrapped and disposed of in the litter bins provided. Residents are also requested to refrain from parking on pavements as this
creates difficulties for those using wheelchairs and prams/pushchairs as well as damaging the surface of the pavement.
Invitation to Buckingham Palace Gillian Warrender the Chair of the Parish Council was delighted to accept an invitation to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her hard work,
dedication and commitment over many years in helping to achieve the building and managing of the Kilham Hall Community Centre for the benefit of residents of the parish.
Next Newsletter – Diary Date The next newsletter will be in December 2011 and will include more details on the Christmas carol singing due to take place on
Wednesday 14th December at 6.30 p.m. at Kilham Hall Community Centre.

Chairman’s Message The 2011 Auckley Show was soon declared a success,
a damp start turned out to be fantastic sunshine by
lunchtime, which in turn produced another record
turn out. Car parks along the River Torne were full to
capacity.
The fishing competition started the events at Bank
End Fisheries on Tuesday 9th August 2011, Lydia
Wade once again took the biggest fish Trophy with a
whopping 7lb 8oz Car, see results for other winners.
‘Auckley Show’s got Talent’ and Disco was held in the
Marquee 6pm Friday 12th August and confirmed
Auckley Show has got talent and well supported, a
brilliant family night out.
Thanks to ‘Feed the Birds’ Blaxton and Martin Gaffney
builders for sponsorship of these events.
The Fancy Dress Parade set off from the village green
at 12 noon to be met by our special guest Paige
Stephens, Miss Teen of Doncaster 2011 who officially
opened the show and helped to judge the competition
with retired Head Teacher Mr Richard Cuell and
Councillor Yvonne Woodcock
Mr Magic entertained followed by street dancer ‘The
Ginger Bread Man’ and local entertainer Vinny Deane
who sung throughout the afternoon. This year The
Armthorpe Elmfield Band took advantage of the good
weather and played in the band stand on the sports
arena.
You will recall 1053 Squadron Air Cadets, based at
Armthorpe, last year took command of communica-
tions and car parking, this year they were joined by
Doncaster Sea Cadets. It was nice to see these two
youth groups working so closely together and deliver-
ing an exceptional service to our community, we hope
they can join us next year.
Excellent feedback was received again from the Craft
Marquee which was full to capacity with a variety of
products.
All the events were well attended. Entries in the horti-
cultural and produce show were a little down on last
year but the quality was top class with some excellent
exhibits.
This year the ‘Show Jumping’ was such a success on
the main show ground we are already planning to
extend this for next year with a ‘warm up area’. Thank
you Lucy Chappel and her team at Boston Park Farm.
This is now becoming a highlight of the day with our
local youngsters displaying their skills.
New for 2011 in the Children’s sports was fun with a
parachute, thanks to sponsor local Architect Anthony
Snowden and coordinators of this fun packed session
Vicki Snowden, Chris and Jim Armstrong.
Another youth group involved again were Auckley
Scouts who provided refreshments and organised a
duck race down the river.
Something I feel we have missing out on of late is live
animals on the show ground, thanks goes to Jonathon
Toothill for making that extra effort to bring along a
few lambs for the children to interact with. We would
like to develop this further; if anyone has idea’s let me
know.
To advertise please call 07795 387937 or 01302 534256 21
Thanks to Brian Cooper and his team at the Idle
Brewery, West Stockwith for the Beer Festival;
including our very own ‘Auckley Show Stopper’ ale
which was first to sell out. Brian also sponsored the
Tug o War, the current holders The Eagle Child held
onto the trophy for 2011.
The ‘Acoustic Angels’ a six piece top class band,
topped the bill this year, the event was a complete sell
out to a capacity of 350. We dined in style; with a
two course meal supplied ‘Occasions of Epworth’.
Auckley show has had its own web site since 2008 and
now has a good photographic record of the show, if
you would like to view this visit
www.auckleyshow.co.uk We thank our photographer
from, Doncaster Camera Club, Rod Gunn who has
provided the majority of these. Moving with times we
have also developed a ‘Facebook’ page if you use this
why not request to be a friend.
On behalf of the Committee and the Community we
would like to express thanks to the generosity of
Auckley Parish Council who provide free use of the
venue and a cash donation to support us. Those local
businesses, family, friends and neighbours who have
donated prizes, to make the tombola and raffle a great
success, and not forgetting volunteers who helped out
on the day.
Would you like to be part of our Committee? We
meet the third Wednesday of every month in the
Parish Centre at Auckley, get in touch, get involved.
I am aware that there are some of you who would like
to help on the day but not be fully committed to the
committee. I fully understand this and we would like
to develop, to run alongside the committee, an
‘Auckley Show Team’ to help with a variety of tasks.
We can tailor your involvement to your time available.
Please get in touch if you would like to discuss how
you get involved
01302 770818 or e mail [email protected]
I hope to meet you all again at the Auckley Show
Saturday 11th August 2012 but please note, we
need help to make it happen.
Regards
Neil Woodward, Chairman Auckley Show

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School
Year 6 residential visit to Marrick Priory
Having attended our Leavers’ Service at St Wilfrid’s Church and the Leavers’ Service
for Diocesan schools at Doncaster Minster, our Year 6 had a wonderful week at
Marrick Priory in Swaledale during the last week of term.
Marrick Priory is a licensed activity centre and we have led successful residential visits
here for over twenty five years! The scenery is beautiful and the centre provides
excellent accommodation.
The visit gives pupils opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor and adventurous
activities, including climbing and abseiling, kayaking, the ropes course, archery,
orienteering and initiative exercises. After the first night, when Year 6 children were
excited about being away with their friends, they were very good at going to sleep
straight away, as they had so much fresh air and exercise! On the Thursday the whole
party went on a long walk to see more of the beautiful scenery, led by our guide from
Marrick Priory. The exact distance of the long walk is a closely guarded school secret,
and is always just referred to as ‘the long walk’ so that nobody is discouraged before
they begin! The last evening at Marrick is
always a special occasion, with a campfire
and songs.
Well done to all our Year 6 pupils who
supported each other well through the
week, showing good team work, as many
children attempted adventurous activities
that they had not tried before. We wish
our Year 6 children every success as they
move onto secondary school and hope that
they have lots of happy memories of their
time at Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary
School.
Best Wishes

News from Auckley Junior, Infant & Nursery School
We hope you are having a lovely summer
and enjoying the holidays.
Auckley School’s sports day was a great
success again this year. All the children
enjoyed joining in the activities and well
as running in their races. A big thank you
the Hayfield students who came to help
us organise the activities throughout the
day.
Year 6 Leavers Assembly
It is a sad goodbye we say to our year 6’s
again. They left us by performing a
fantastic play for the end of term. All of
the pupils joined in with acting, sing or
dancing and it was clear that great fun
was had by all. We wish them all the best
of luck at their future schools.

It was a case of all hands on deck back
in June when a team led by environ-mental charity BTCV brought a story of fairytale magic to Auckley School
to brighten up and inspire the nursery site.
Fifteen corporate volunteers from RBS worked tirelessly all day under BTCV’s guidance to build
raised beds, repaint an outdoor classroom, tidy the nature area and paint three huge murals – all
themed around the classic fairytale Alice in Wonderland. The group were joined by volun-
teers from Hayfield Social Enterprise who made a fantastic contribution mucking in and helping
making it happen.
It was great to see the look on the children’s
faces and has certainly freshened and brightened up the place. All we have left to do is organise a
tea party in honour of Alice and the Mad Hat-ter!
A massive thank you to everyone involved!
Auckley School gets fairytale revamp!

Doncaster Advanced Motorists
Overtaking Dear readers,
Ask yourself do I really need to overtake? Is the overtake necessary and worthwhile, what’s the point in
exposing yourself to unnecessary danger to jump one or two places up a queue of traffic.
At best you’ll only arrive at your destination a few seconds earlier! Instead of getting agitated, drop back,
(not to much) and enjoy the ride. The bully driver, who speeds up the wrong side of the road-only to cut
up other drivers when he forces his way back in to avoid on-coming traffic-is a danger to himself and
everyone else.
Every overtake requires planning, quick thinking and decisiveness. Ask these questions before you attempt
any overtaking manoeuvre.
1. Is their sufficient clear road ahead to carry out the manoeuvre safely? Is anyone ahead slowing
down or turning right?
2. Does your car have enough acceleration to pass safely?
3. Which gear will provide the best acceleration to complete the manoeuvre?
4. Will you get a better overtaking opportunity soon?
5. Is the vehicle in front hiding another vehicle that may block your attempts to pull-in?
6. Beware of slow moving vehicles they can turn quickly.
7. Are there any concealed hazards such as obstructed lay-bys, side turnings, entrances, buildings or
gates.
8. Never overtake near a junction, even one that looks clear. The vehicle you’re passing might turn
without warning or some one might pull out. When joining a main road, a lot of ordinary drivers
only take the time to look right before
pulling out. This is the cause of numerous
high-speed accidents.
9. Observe around and underneath any vehicle
you’re passing to check all is clear in front of
it. Often, shadows are a good way to judge
whether for example, a large lorry is hiding a
motorcycle.
10. Never make risky overtakes. If in doubt stay
back.
Overtaking in bad weather is more dangerous as
visibility can be seriously reduced by spray and
braking distances are significantly increased. Also
remember that, just because you can’t see headlights
doesn’t mean that there’s no vehicle there. Many
motorists forget to put their headlights on except
when driving at night.
