The public policy program un-derscores AAUW’s mission ofadvancing equity for womenand girls through advocacy, education and research, andspeaks to women’s needs, as-pirations, and concerns acrossthe life span The work ofAAUW builds upon over a cen-tury of responsible public par-ticipation at the local, state, national, and international lev-els. AAUW is committed toworking in partnership withdiverse allies.

The following principles pro-vide a basis for AAUW mem-bers’ actions at the local, state, national, and international lev-els. Implicit in each is supportfor government agencies ad-ministering programs, includ-ing adequate appropriations, effective and accountable ad-ministration, and provision forcitizen participation. We workto increase the number of un-derrepresented populations, including women, in policy-and other decision-makingpositions.

We support a SocialSecurity system that providesinflation-protected, guaran-

teed lifetime benefits with a pro-gressive benefit formula, spousaland widow benefits, and disabil-ity and survivor benefits. We sup-port public budgets that balanceindividual rights and responsibil-ity to the community. AAUW values and is committedto the arts and humanities, whichdevelop and enhance our plural-istic cultural heritage.

What is the selling pointyou ask? Past and currentcases have not changedpractices in the state ornation or world-wide. More money will beneeded to mount a strong

case when litigation isidentified such as LillyLedbetter v. GoodyearTire and Rubber, whichthe U.S. Supreme Courtdecided last year in favorof Goodyear. After hearing this explana-tion, Oregon Conventionattendees passed a resolu-tion asking the AAUWBoard to take no furtheraction on these issues be-fore getting member feed-back. Members in Virginiaand Washington have alsovoiced a concern to theAssociation Board.

The recent strategic plan-ning process brought fortha number of areas thatAAUW needed to addressif the organization is toremain a viable force onbehalf of women and girls. If you missed our conven-tion this spring in Port-land, this information isintended to inform you ofwhat we know at this timeabout the makeover of theLegal Advocacy Fund.
