Ordinarily, a team of engineers would have to devote a full day
to inspecting network problems and generating reports – after
collecting data from the field. The WCDMA RAN Tuning Re-
port application in TEMS DeskCat can reduce that time to one
hour or less. An engineer’s time is valuable. Ericsson TEMS
strives to allow engineers to make better use of it.
BENEFITS TO ENGINEERS, MANAGERS, AND
MARKETING TEAMS
WCDMA RAN Tuning reports serve the purposes of engineers,
managers, and marketing teams.
Engineers: Detailed call classification charts and tables pro-
vide valuable information to engineers who are responsible for
identifying and correcting network deficiencies. A chart show-
ing dropped call details, for example, would be meaningful to
these users. Figure 1 is an example.
Managers and Marketing Teams: WCDMA RAN Tuning re-
port options include charts and tables that provide statistics
on Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in the cluster. Summary
data such as the call set-up success rate and number of
dropped calls is especially geared toward managers and mar-
keting teams who want a high-level view of network perform-
ance. See Table 1 for an example of cluster-level information.
GENERATE REPORTS EASILY
The new WCDMA RAN Tuning reports in TEMS DeskCat con-
sist of a wide range of charts and tables for both scanner andUser Equipment (UE) data that is collected by TEMS Investi-
gation WCDMA. Reports containing charts and text are gen-
erated in Microsoft® Word format. Plots are produced in MIF
format that can be imported into MapInfo®.
Users build the reports by selecting options in a TEMS DeskCat
wizard and inserting bookmarks in a Microsoft Word template.
This gives them complete control over which elements will be
included in a report. In addition, they can define which thresh-
olds are used for statistics calculations.
After taking a few moments to set up the report, the user can
walk away and let TEMS DeskCat dynamically generate the

content. Engineers are free to spend more time analyzing data,
troubleshooting issues, and evaluating potential tuning meas-
ures. Operating costs are reduced because network rollouts
and tuning happen more quickly and with greater efficiency.
SCANNER MEASUREMENTS
When generating a WCDMA RAN Tuning report, TEMS DeskCat
processes all scanner measurements that exist in the selected
log files. Binning methods depend on the type of output. Bins
have default sizes but can be changed by the user. For scan-
ner measurements, these outputs are produced:
• Binned MapInfo MIF file
• Tables and charts showing statistics of cluster coverage,
pilot pollution and cell coverage
• Table of potential neighbor candidates
UE MEASUREMENTS
The binning method for UE measurements is the same as bin-
ning for scanners. The output will be used to create the Map
Info MIF plot and UE pilot coverage table.
In addition to binning, TEMS DeskCat traps important events
found in the UE measurements. The results of event trapping
are displayed on MIF plots; charts and tables of KPIs; and
charts and tables of accessibility, retainability, and mobility
statistics.
For calculations of accessibility, retainability, and mobility
statistics, the user selects the logfile and UE that will be
analyzed.
• Accessibility is measured by the number and classification
of the blocked calls
• Retainability is measured by the number and classification
of the dropped calls
• Mobility is measured by the number and classification of
the handover successes and failures
TEMS DeskCat traps approximately 18 events for the WCDMA
RAN Tuning Reports. Here are some common events that are
identified by TEMS DeskCat:
• Call Attempt
• Call Established
• Blocked Call
• Call End
• Dropped Call
• End of Logfile
• SHO Attempt
• SHO Complete• UE Disconnected
Each event may have several subclasses, which are based on
the condition that existed when the event occurred. More than
90 event and subclass pairs are in effect. Here are examples
of subclasses for the dropped call event
• Abnormal Change to Idle mode
• Abnormal Disconnect
• Abnormal RRC Connection Release
All subclasses are mutually exclusive.
A VALUABLE TOOL
TEMS DeskCat WCDMA RAN Tuning Reports provide a break-
down of the network KPIs and produce distinctive report docu-
ments and plots. Reports are customizable; the simple wizard
lets users select the data to include and the type of analysis
to run. The template lets users decide how the results will be
presented. And of course, data consistency and integrity is
assured.
WCDMA RAN Tuning Reports make TEMS DeskCat an even
more valuable tool for efficient post-processing, allowing
operators to make the most of their valuable time.
