East Asian cities face unprecedented urbanization. How well cities respond to
these challenges in a sustainable, equitable and competitive manner will largelydepend on how they manage their land, markets, infrastructure and spatial
planning. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our two-day knowledge
exchange on these topics on June 30th to July 1st, 2011, jointly organized by the
World Bank and our partners at KRIHS(Korea Research Institute for Human
Settlements).
The event represents the East Asia Launch of the Urbanization Knowledge
Platform, which is an initiative that aims to put the world’s best urban
knowledge and data in the hands of policy-makers and practitioners to harness
urbanization for better development outcomes. A primary objective of the
knowledge exchange is to develop cross-national partnerships and encourage
peer-to-peer learning regarding urbanization issues. Participants are invited to
share their experience and practical understanding with fellow policy-makers,
which then can be applied to their cities. Additionally, the event seeks to foster
the formation of a community of practice on land use planning and urban
management, which shall continue to evolve using the Urbanization
Knowledge Platform. A regional videoconference with broad participation from
stakeholders in East Asia will close the workshop and enable dissemination of
the lessons learned.
We are thrilled to have you join this event, together with leading experts, such
as Professor Edward Glaeser of Harvard University, Professor Masahisa Fujita
of Kyoto University, Professor David Dowall of University of California,
Berkeley, and Roberto Chavez of MIT’s Incremental Housing Network. The
roundtable will include participants from China, Indonesia, Korea, Lao,
Mongolia, Philippines, and Vietnam. We are looking forward to your presence
and contribution.
