1) INTRODUCTION

1.1) Detection control panel characteristics

The gas control panel SENTOX IDI has been designed for light industrial applications and can be connected to 32 SMART 3 IDI or LCR3 PK IDI detectors daisy chained to the RS 485 bus.

On the SENTOX IDI front plate, an OLED Pictiva 96x64 high brightness display provides an ongoing reading of the concentration being measured and, in case of an alarm, the alarm threshold attained and the respective channel.

Each threshold or function is visualised by a double LED raw. Acknowledge, Reset, and Set functions can be activated by 3 push buttons placed nearby the LED's.

The display also shows the highest gas concentration reached by each detector being connected. SENTOX IDI is provided with 5 output relays, of which three are associated to the alarm thresholds, 1 to Fault and 1 to WD (Watch Dog).

The panel also features the implementation of further 32 optional outputs via remote ST.G/OUT16 cards.

The unit comes into a metal cabinet complete with 24Vdc, 3A power supply and offers the possibility to allocate 2 back-up batteries max. 12V 7 Ah.

To offer higher safety, an interactive RS485 output has been implemented for the connection to a supervising system.

2.1) Control Unit

Connect the three core mains supply cable to the power supply terminals (1.5 mm2 per core minimum) and have it secured with the appropriate cable grip.

Connect the Power supply and the RS485 line for the detectors and the output modules (optional) to the CN3 terminal block before powering up the control panel.

After powering up the control panel, connect the red and black power supply cables fitted with Faston connectors to the 2 x sealed lead acid batteries (12 Vdc / 7 Ah max.). The battery should be carefully fitted inside the space at the left side of the cabinet.

2.2) Gas Detectors

SENTOX IDI gas control panel can be connected to Sensitron's SMART3 and LCR3 PK IDI.

Detectors are to be duly installed according to the gas to be detected and in fulfilment of all EU or national rules in force.

Before installing the gas detectors, we recommend to strictly follow what stated in the detectors' handbook and to consider the few rules given here below just as a generic prescription.

As a general statement, detectors should be mounted close to any possible source of release or where any eventual gas stagnation could be foreseen.

To measure a gas with specific weight higher than air, like Propane or Butane, the detectors should be installed at 30 cm. from floor. Whereas to detect a gas with specific weight lighter than air, like Methane or Hydrogen, the detectors should be placed 30 cm. from ceiling.

To detect Carbon Monoxide or Oxygen, we recommend to mount the detector at a breathing level or “nose height” about 150 cm. from floor, while for CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) detectors should be mounted at 30 cm from the floor.

For the remaining gases not mentioned as an example here above, we invite our customers to contact Sensitron or its local agent or to consult our Tutorial Guide to Gas detection.

We remind that the correct positioning of a gas detector is vital to assure a prompt and accurate detection.

2.2.1) SMART 3 gas detector

The following instructions explain how to insert the ST.S/IDI serial interface to make the SMART3 CC and SMART3 CD communicate on RS485 bus.

Before inserting the ST.S/IDI interface, be sure the detector has been powered off. Insert the vertical plug-in card into the 10-pole connector, paying attention to leave the two left side poles free. Make sure the card has been fully plugged in.

Turn the side comprising the red LED towards the main terminal board, as shown in the drawing here below.

2.2.2) SMART3 detectors address programming

On the RS485 serial line the detectors are daisy chained on one bus only. In order for the system to work properly, it is very important the right identification through the defined code on the detector’s electronic card.

The addressing is made by some dip-switches on the main PCB of the SMART3 detectors.

The serial loop accepts 32 detectors and 2 remote 16-output modules.

The addresses accepted for the detectors are from 02 till 33 included, while the addresses 0 and 1 are reserved to the output modules.

The table below shows how the dip-switches are to be set for the address definition.

The detector addressed as 2 on the loop is the identified as No. 1 to the control panel; the one addressed as 3 is identified as No.2 to the panel and so on, till the address 33 that will be the number 32 to the control panel.

2.2.3) LCR 3 PK IDI detectors

LCR3 PK IDI gas detectors have a RS485 serial output and are to be connected to Sensitron's “IDI” control panels.

For the LCR3 PK IDI, the handheld calibration keypad ST.S/CKD must be used to set the address of each detector being connected on the RS485 line.

The serial loop accepts 32 detectors and 2 remote 16-output modules.

The addresses accepted for the detectors are from 02 till 33 included, while the addresses 0 and 1 are reserved to the output modules.

The detector addressed as 2 on the loop is the identified as No. 1 to the control panel; the one addressed as 3 is identified as No.2 to the panel and so on, till the address 33 that will be the number 32 to the control panel

2.3) Output cards G/OUT16

The remote output cards ST.G/OUT16 should be fixed by using the 4 holes (3 mm) at the corner of the card. The card can be housed in a plastic box (P/N ST.G/BOX) or in a power supply cabinet P/N VM.B/138V15.

The cards are connected in RS485 serial mode (daisy chained) to the control unit, and they need an identification addressing.

The figure here below shows the mechanical dimensions and the jumpers JP3 to addressing the card.

2.5) System wiring

Communication between the SENTOX IDI and the detectors is by RS485 bus. The control panel constantly monitors the detectors and the remote modules connected. A break in the communication from any one of the detectors or modules generates a Fault status in the control panel.

2.6) Gas detectors connection

Wirings between the control panel and the remote devices (detectors and the output modules) should be made by using 4 wires: 2 wires for the RS485 communication and 2 wires for the power supply. The cable for the RS485 communication must an EIA RS485: 2 core wires with section 0.22 / 0.35 mm2 and shield (twisted pair). Nominal capacity between the wires < 50pF/m, nominal impedance 120 ohm. These features can be found in BELDEN cable 9842 or similar (data transmission cable in EIA RS485). By this wiring, the line total length should not exceed 1000 m. Detectors and output modules are to be daisy chained. Absolutely avoid any star or tree mode connection to prevent interference or wrong communication.

Make sure that each multi-polar wire includes just one RS485. Make sure that a 120 Ohm end line resistor is placed at the beginning and at the end (on the last detector or output module) of the bus line. For the detectors' power supply connection use a 2-wire cable with suitable section as a function of the distance and the number of detectors.

Once the installation has been completed and the system is powered-on, make sure that each detector gets at least 12 Vdc.

2.7) Output module connection

The connection of the remote output modules to the serial line of the RS485 bus is shown below.

If the 16-output module is the last element of the chain, a 120 Ohm end of line resistance must connected across the A and B terminals.

2.8) Serial connection to a Personal Computer

3) SYSTEM POWER UP AND OPERATION

3.1) Operation of the SENTOX IDI control panel

On the SENTOX IDI front plate, a display provides an ongoing reading of the gas concentration measured by each detector being connected and, in case of an alarm, the alarm threshold attained and the respective channel.

Each threshold or function is visualised by a double LED raw. Acknowledge, Reset, and Set functions can be activated by 3 push buttons placed nearby the LED's.

After a two-minute inactivity, the display intensity progressively fades. In case of alarm or by simply pressing any of the keys, the display will turn on again.

3.1.1) Start-up operation of the control panel

At the start-up, SENTOX IDI control panel will enter a warm-up phase during which the indication PCM616 is shown on the display and all LED's turn off exception made for FAULT and POWER indications. Once the warm-up phase is over and the start-up procedure is correct, the first detector status will be displayed.

Should the buzzer sound after the start up, mute it by pressing ACK and check the cause by controlling which LED on the front panel is ON among Fault, Alarm1, Alarm2 or Alarm3. On the display it will appear either the wording FLT (Fault) or L1, L2 or L3 according to the alarm levels. At this point, after verifying that the system is either on Fault or Alarm condition, operate as follows:

In case of system in Fault

It will be sufficient to enter the Unset (UNS) status by keeping SET pushed for 3 seconds then push ACK. A Fault status may either be caused by one or more gas detectors in Fault or any anomaly in the RS485 communication between the control panel and the detectors.

In case of system in Alarm:

Press ACK key to mute the audible Alarm. To Reset and then Unset the system, it is absolutely necessary to eliminate the Alarm status first. Once the Alarm condition has been restored press the RST key to reset the system.

3.1.2) SYSTEM SET

System Set is the normal operation mode of the control panel. The gas concentration being detected is shown on the display and the following messages are reported:

status (OK or FT fault), L1 (Caution or alarm 1), L2 (Warning or alarm 2), L3 (Alarm or alarm 3) along with the SET or UNSET system condition. Keep the ACK key pressed for two seconds to allow the display scroll to the other channels and display their status. When the unit receives an alarm condition the corresponding output relay activates.

SENTOX IDI is provided with 5 output relays with the functions below listed

RL1 (threshold 1) RL2 (threshold 2) RL3 (threshold 3) RL4 (fault) RL5 (watch–dog). RL1 activates when the first programmed alarm threshold is attained, RL2 when the second one is reached, RL3 when the third one is reached.

RL4 activates when a Fault is present (one or more detectors on fault or the RS485 communication bus failure) and RL5 deactivates in case the microprocessor controlling the board should lockout during normal operation (during normal operation RL5 is always active). All the relays provide free changeover contacts.

3.1.3) SYSTEM UNSET

To Unset the system (UNS) keep the SET key pushed for 3 seconds and then press ACK. In this condition the control panel is monitoring the detectors but when the unit reports an Alarm or a Fault condition the relay output are not activated.

To move back to the SET status, press the SET key for 3 second and then ACK.

3.1.4) ALARM STATUS

Outputs

When a programmed alarm threshold is attained, the control unit provides a visual/acoustic signalling by activating the buzzer along with the LED and the relay corresponding to that alarm status.

The ACK key allows muting the audible alarm, thus deactivating the buzzer.

Any time an alarm threshold is exceeded, the buzzer activates and needs muting.

Soon after muting, the ACK key recovers its function of channel scrolling, by keeping it pressed for about two seconds.

When the alarm condition has been recovered and no further gas presence is being detected, both alarms and the visual indications of the maximum alarm threshold reached can be reset. In order to activate this procedure press the RST key.

During the alarm condition, the display shows the concentration attained in real time. At the same time, the wording status OK changes progressively into L1 or L2 or L3 to show the detector status, contrary to the visual indications that record the maximum level reached.

The unit event log records date, time and type of alarm or fault. To enter the menu proceed as detailed in the flowchart:

It is necessary to program the system after the first power up and each time a system component is added or removed. It is possible to locally program the system using the keypad on the front panel or better using a Personal Computer and the dedicated configuration software.

It is possible to enter the programming mode from the Unset (UNS) mode only, following the flowchart detailed in the next page.:

PRF01 is the first out of the 32 profiles that can be set for each channel (CH1 to CH32). For each one of the Profiles, it is possible to select the measuring range (%LEL, ppm, % Vol, O2), the three alarm thresholds and the hysteresis (Hys). Signal can be of increasing (UP) or decreasing (DOWN) type. The audible alarm associated to the first threshold can be activated (BON) or deactivated (BOFF).

Notes on programming menu:

1. The wording BON/BOFF indicates the buzzer setting/un-setting for the first alarm threshold

2. Output HIGH/LOW mode states for the relay being in latched or unlatched mode (coil always energised / coil always de-energised)

The SENTOX IDI control panel is fully programmable by a personal computer with a dedicated configuration software (optional). The “PCM 602 configuration” software has been designed to make the control panel programming simpler and faster. The programming of the control panel by the keypad is laborious in that the control panel has various functions.

5) PCM 602 CONFIGURATION SOFTWARE (OPTIONAL)

The “PCM 602 configuration” software has been designed to make the control panel programming simpler and faster. The programming the control panel from the keypad is laborious in that the control panel has various functions and numerous zones. The programming necessary to make the system operative is described in the following pages. The “PCM 602 configuration” software has been designed to work in both Windows 95/98/2000/XP environments, and as such the user interface is similar to other Windows software

5.1) Installation of the software

Switch on the Personal Computer and wait for the Windows to be running. Insert the “PCM 602 configuration” CD-Rom into the computer’s drive, start “File Manager” and run the executable file UP.EXE from the CD-Rom. Follow the instructions which appear in the monitor screen until the software installation is finished.

5.2) Wiring and connections

In order to connect the SENTOX IDI control panel with a Personal Computer, it is essential to use an RS232/RS485 (or USB) interface. The next figure shows the electrical connections.

5.3) Starting the program

From the Programs menu select the “Pcm602EV V. 2.01” group and then select “Pcm602EV V. 2.01”

5.4) Parameters pre-setting

By choosing “File” and clicking on the submenu “Parameters” the window below appears where it is possible to select the language used by the program, the password for the connection to the control panel (for the Up-load and the Down-load), the serial communication port for the PC, and the path for saving the configuration files.

5.5) Creating a new configuration file

Select New from the File menu and, between the three options Analogic, ISA and IDI, chose IDI that is the right one for the SENTOX IDI control unit. The window below appears

About the menu:

General: is for setting the general options of the SENTOX IDI control panel. See the par. 5.5.1.

Profiles: this option specifies up to 32 operation channel functions to be customized to the user’s requirements. e.g. the % LEL monitoring, the alarm levels and so on. See the par. 5.5.2

Channels: indicates the operational status that one wishes to give to the channel in question. See the par. 5.5.3.

Outputs: programming the output parameters implies defining how the outputs, that have been programmed in the various input channels, will operate. See the Par. 5.5.4.

Model: SENTOX IDI that it is the name of the control panel

Start up Delay: it is the Warm Up time of the control panel, after the power up (0-999 minutes). Suggested 2 minutes.

Serial number: is the serial number of the control panel. It will appear after the first data Up-load or Down-load from the control panel.

Test date: factory test date of the control panel. It will appear after the first data Up-load or Down-load from the control panel.

Language: is the language of the texts on the control panel display

Date format: the date format: dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy or yy/mm/dd.

Time format: 24 h or Am/Pm

Control panel address: is the address of the control panel (fixed to 1 for SENTOX IDI)

Firmware version: firmware version of the control panel. It will appear after the first data Up-load or Down-load from the control panel.

5.5.2) Profiles

up to 32 Profiles are available for programming. The “Profile” specifies all settable parameters for each gas that has to be detected and the detection tasks required, e.g. measure unit, full scale range, the alarm levels etc. Measure Unit: can be % LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) for flammable gas detectors, ppm (Part Per Million) for Toxic gas detectors, % Vol. for CO2 and % O2 for Oxygen detectors. Signal direction: Down for Oxygen detectors or Up for every other kind of gas detector. Full Scale: is the measuring range of each gas detector. Usually this corresponds to 100 for flammable gas detectors but can be different from type to type for Toxic gas detectors. (it is related to the gas detector to be connected to the SENTOX IDI). Threshold 1: the first Alarm level of this Profile Threshold 2: the second Alarm level of this Profile Threshold 3: the third Alarm level of this Profile

Hysteresis: This value indicates how variations in the signal will be ignored when in close proximity to the alarm threshold. The value is expressed as for the measure unit (% or ppm). Copy Profile: This command allows copying the settings for one Profile to other Profiles. In the Channel menu (see paragraph 5.5.3.) one out of the programmed Profiles will have to be associated to each detector being connected.

5.5.3) Channels

Setting the Channel parameters implies programming the appropriate Profile for each detector and define the Channel status (Set or Unset).

Select the channel (detector) from 1 to 32 Associated type: choose the right Profile between those previously programmed in the Profiles menu. If the Channel is not used (detector not connected) the option Spare must be chosen. Channel status: Choose SET for a normal channel (detector) operation. If SET, the input channel is monitored and, in the event of an alarm, all the associated outputs are activated. Choose UNSET for a channel (detector) in test mode. If UNSET, the input channel is monitored but in the event of an alarm the associated outputs will not activate. Weight Threshold 1: not used (forced to 100) Weight Threshold 2: not used (forced to 100) Weight Threshold 3: not used (forced to 100) Copy Channel: This command allows the settings of a particular channel to be copied to other channels.

Programming the output parameters implies defining how the outputs that are part of the system will operate.

Activation delay: Can delay from 1 to 720 seconds the activation of the output

Deactivation delay (just for the Reflex mode): Can delay from 1 to 999 seconds the deactivation for the output after the alarm event is restored.

Pulse duration: (just for the Pulse mode) Can set the duration time of an energized output.

Output level: It defines if the relay output it is normally activated (high) or normally deactivated (low).

Setup the Open Collector outputs on the ST.G/OUT16 modules.

When the remote output modules ST.G/OUT16 are connected on the RS485 loop, it is possible to program the external outputs from 1 to 16 (if the module is addressed as 0) and from 17 to 32 (if the module is addressed as 1). See paragraph 2.3

choose the external outputs from 1 to 16 (first output module addressed 0) or from 17 to 32 (second output module addressed 1).

Output type: the Output can have three different operation modes:

Type (Profile) and Threshold: the Type (Profile) is to be selected to create the association between the output and the Profile (from Prf. 1 to Prf. 32). The relationship between the output and the channel (detector) is done by setting the same Profile.

First example:

-) should channel (detector) 4 be set to Profile 1

-) External output 3 set to Profile n. 1

-) and the Threshold set to Threshold 3

means that whenever Channel 4 (detector 4) reaches the 3rd

alarm Threshold, the External output No. 3 will activate.

The rule to bear in mind is the detector (channel) and the output to be activated must be configured with the same Profile.

Second example:

-) Should 32 detectors be connected, each one with an individual output associated to the 2nd

alarm threshold

To create 32 External outputs associated to the 2nd

alarm Threshold of each of the 32 gas detectors (channels), it is necessary to create 32 Profiles (menu Profiles) and associate each one of the 32 channels (detectors) to one of the 32 Profiles (menu Channels).

The last operation is to set each one of the 32 External outputs (menu Outputs) to each one of the 32 Profiles. In this case, Threshold 2 will be set.

Note: the above configuration requires that two remote output modules ST.G/OUT16 are loop connected.

5.6) Send Configuration (Download)

Once the parameter programming has been completed, it is possible to download (Send) the set-up to the control panel. It is advisable to save the programming file before downloading data to the SENTOX IDI control panel using the Save option from the File menu. By using the Parameters option in the File menu, check that the configuration of the port to which the control panel has been connected is correct. Select ”Send” from the “Action” menu, enter the password (default 000001) and enter the Control panel address “1” but do not give the OK command at this point.

In the control panel, enter the Programming mode (please refer to the control panel programming part of this manual)

Click Ok to start downloading. The downloading bar will be immediately displayed. On the control panel display the message “Remote prog.” will appear and during this phase it is neither possible to carry out any other operation nor monitor the inputs.

Once the data download is over, disconnect the cable between the control panel and the PC. The control panel is still in Programming mode and it is necessary to exit (see par. 4.1)

5.7) Receive configuration (Upload)

Whenever the data stored in the panel need updating or revising, connect the panel to the PC and upload the old parameters.

In the control panel, enter the Programming mode (please refer to the control panel programming part of this manual). Select the Receive option in the Action menu of the configuration software.

Enter the control panel address “1” then click OK. The downloading bar will be immediately displayed. During this time it is neither possible to carry out any other operation on the control panel nor monitor the inputs.

Once the data up-load has ended, disconnect the cable between the control panel and the PC. The control panel is still in Programming mode and it is necessary to exit (see par. 4.1)

Data can now be modified on the PC and once ready for downloading, please refer to paragraph 5.6).

5.8) TEST menu

The “TEST” menu offers the following options:

5.8.1) State

This option gives users the ability to view graphically the state of the control panel and of all the 32 channels. To launch this option click on State in the TEST drop down menu. To Log On to the panel, the user must enter the control panel address “1” as prompted by the window displayed below:

Then press OK. The uploading bar will be immediately displayed. Once the State function has been accessed, the user is presented with a graphical representation of the SENTOX IDI control panel currently on-line. The window gives a general overview of the SENTOX IDI system. All the 32 channels are displayed with details. See below.

• By the Export command You can save the event list in the computer as a .csv file. A .csv file can be opened by other programs as Microsoft Excel for further elaboration.
