Senses systemBy Katie Ust
Mechanoreceptors Mechanoreceptors are sensory receptors
that respond to mechanical pressure or distortion
Sensors are located all over the body; in the skin, hair follicles, and mouth
Thermoreceptor Codes absolute and relative changes in
temperature They are located in various tissues such
as skin, the cornea, and the urinary bladder.
Chemoreceptor Detects chemical stimuli in the
environment Transduces a chemical signal into action
potential Examples are olfactory receptor neurons,
taste buds, carotid bodies and aortic bodies that detect change in oxygen
The chemoreceptor trigger zone is in the medulla of the brain.
Photoreceptors Capable of phototransduction Convert light into signals that stimulate
biological processes. Found in the retina
Pain Receptors Free nerve endings that warn of
potentially harmful changes in environment.
Located mostly in the epidermis and epithelial covering of certain mucous membranes.
Rhodopsin Located in the retina Responsible for the formation of
photoreceptor cells and the first events in the color of light
Uses cell signaling to absorb and translocate light
