You may register for programs at any time
How does it work? We use a teleconferencing (multi-person) phone system, which allows you to connect
with the facilitator of the program, as well as the other participants calling into the same program.
On the time and day of the program you will call into the session using the toll-free number, and will be joined into the phone session.
You will be able to hear and speak with the group and facilitator.
What if I am unable to call into the program on my own? If you are unable to call into the program using the steps, we can call you directly into the phone program. It would be very similar to just receiving a phone call from a friend!
Is there a cost? No– all programming is free of charge, and participants call into a toll-free line. No special equipment is needed. All you need is your own phone!

Fountain of Health:
Learn about Problem-Solving Skills for Optimal Aging
Research shows that there are five actions you can take to optimize your health and happiness as you age. The Fountain of Health educational initiative founded by the Geriatric Psychiatry Program
at Dalhousie University translates research into practical steps that promote resilience, emotional wellbeing and health over the lifespan.
In this discussion, we will address one of these five actions: caring for our mental health, and sharpening our problem solving skills in particular. Depression, stress and worry are often the result of life problems that have become overwhelming. Without beating ourselves up, the strategies for solving them have been ineffective, or may even have made them worse. We will go over the seven steps to solve problems effectively, known as Problem-Solving Therapy.

Festival of Diwali
Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith: Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs.
Join Dr Maitreyi Sahe as she helps us explore the history and the significance of this holiday. We will also learn about how Diwali is celebrated across the world, and here in Ottawa.

Readings by Ricki Segal
My Zayde (grandfather) and Other Memories of Growing up Jewish is a collection of short stories and poems in which author Ricki Segal lovingly relates the caring and unique personalities of many of her relatives especially her Zayde (grandfather) Louis Lazar.
As a young girl growing up in Winnipeg in the 1950's and 1960's Ricki spent considerable time with her grandparents and extended family during the summer and special religious holidays. From her own hilarious incidents with mistletoe and tampons to her Zayde Lazar unorthodox practise of relieving himself on the front lawn as well as many other memorable family gatherings, this collection celebrates Ricki family ties across the generations.

Argentina
“Don’t cry for me Argentina”, thus goes the theme song of the musical Evita, with a score written by Andrew Lloyd Weber in the late 70’s about Eva Peron, the wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron.
There may be lot to cry about regarding the political and economic problems of Argentina, but it is a spectacular country with wonderful people. The southernmost nation of the American continent, it is one of the world’s largest countries in size. Extending from tropical forests in the north to the Antarctic in the south, and from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the highest peaks of Andes in the west, it is a country of astonishingly varied landscape. A country of vast open spaces but also one of the most European looking cities and the
home of the tango, Buenos Aires. Learn

Chatting About Music: Remembering 1950
By 1950 the Big Band/ Swing era was finished, and the Rock 'n' Roll era had not quite arrived, so what kind of music were we listening to? It seems like it was a little of everything.
That was the year that a handsome young tenor by the name of Mario Lanza burst upon the popular music scene with Be My Love, the first of several million-selling recordings.
Perry Como was Hoop de Doo-ing it every time you turned on the radio, Tony Martin was singing like There's No Tomorrow, and there was a folksy group called the Weavers singing Good Night Irene.
We were entranced by Nat Cole's cool performance of Mona Lisa, and the soulfulness of Edith Piaf's La vie en rose. Walt Disney studios, on the brink of bankruptcy, was saved by the financial and artistic success of Cinderella, and songs like A bushel and a peck from Guys and Dolls earned a Tony award for best musical on Broadway. And how about Donald O'Connor and Ethel Merman teasing each other about memory lapses - "Dearie, do you remember? ... Well if you remember, darling, you're much older than I."
Listen to vintage recordings of the songs of 1950: Broadway, folk, country, novelty, romantic ballads and more, presented with a brief commentary on the tunes and the trends and the times.
Presenter: Brian McGurrin, retired
librarian with a passion for music.

Singing in a Winter Wonderland!
Join us for a lively performance with Gertrude Létourneau “Trudy”. You’ll get to sing your favorite Christmas songs and listen to beautiful carols played on her 4 different flutes. You can even ask special requests! Trudy has been working as a musician at The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre for 17 years. She has been engaging our veterans in the music of WWII era. Gertrude also presents concerts in several Seniors Homes in the Ottawa area. “To watch Gertrude Létourneau bring music to elderly people is to experience the nourishment of a parched flower. Faces and eyes light up. Mouths form the words from almost forgotten songs. Fingers tap to the rhythms of melodies both familiar and just simply beautiful. Gertrude brings a vivacious and energet-ic spirit to her interchange with her audi-ences which is only one of the reasons why they love her. “
