Born and raised in Norwalk, Judge DePanfilisis a graduate of Fairfield Prep, FairfieldUniversity, and Georgetown University LawCenter. He is admitted to practice in bothConnecticut and New York, as well as theFederal District Court and U.S. Supreme Court.He is a member of the Fairfield County,Connecticut, and American Bar Associations,the American Association for Justice, theConnecticut Trial Lawyers Association, theNational College of Probate Judges, theExecutive Committee of the ConnecticutProbate Assembly, neutral member of theAmerican Dispute Resolution Center, and cur-rently chairs the Probate Court SecurityCommittee.

Being a lifelong resident of Norwalk, Tonyhas been involved in many community activi-ties, including past president of the RotaryClub, a former trustee of the SeaportAssociation and the Nature Center forEnvironmental Activities, and member of theZoning Board of Appeals.

and developing new leaders within

business and the community are es-

sential for growth, progress, and prosperity. The

Norwalk Leadership Institute is de signed to

prepare individuals for leadership roles by pro-

viding them with the necessary knowledge,

skills, and encouragement to succeed.

Since 1981, the Norwalk Leadership Institute

of the Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce

has graduated nearly 500 participants, providing

mo ti va ted and informed individuals to assume

leadership positions in business, local organi-

zations, government, and the community at

large. The Norwalk Leadership Institute con-

tinues to remain one of the more significant

and respected programs conducted by the

Greater Norwalk Cham ber of Com merce.

This perennial program, consisting of ten

weekly sessions, seeks to instruct and educate

participants concerning current and future

needs and opportunities within the community,

examine social and economic changes, and ex-

plore the creation and implementation of cre-

ative ideas and effective solutions. The program

also focuses on enhancing communication

skills, problem-solving techniques, and forging

beneficial partnerships.

Lastly, the program seeks to motivate its partici-

pants to assume active leadership roles within the

local community, and within their respective places

of employment.

These goals are accomplished through informative

presentations and workshops, and also by utilizing

group efforts to address real challenges and issues in

the community. The presenters in each of these ses-

sions are key local leaders and business professionals

within the Norwalk community.

Sessions included: Tour of Norwalk (by bus and

boat), Communications Workshop, Local Govern-

ment, Economic Development, The Media & Local

Issues, Education, Healthcare, Regional Demograph-

ics and Workforce Development, and

Leadership/Community In volvement. At the close

of the program, the team project is presented during

the Graduation Breakfast, where participants receive

their graduation certificate.

The 2014 Norwalk Leadership Institute Steering

Committee was chaired by 2014 Chamber vice

chairman Terri Polley, president, Financial Ac-

counting Foundation. The NLI program this year

boasted a talented and varied group of 13 individ-

uals, representing a wide variety of businesses and

organizations. As part of the Norwalk Leadership

Institute each year, those enrolled also work on a

specified side project to benefit the community at

large. The participants of the 2014 Norwalk Lead-

ership Institute worked toward a project in an

arena that is highly relevant, challenging, and ever-

increasing — care of the elderly. This issue possesses

several dimensions, including the realms of finance,

healthcare, legal, and many others. The Leadership

group has coordinated and will host a forum ad-

dressing a variety of issues of elder care on Saturday,

April 18, at Norwalk Community College — and

will be publicizing this event throughout the city.

In addition to presentations, the program will also

showcase a variety of elder–related resources in the

greater Norwalk area. The group has also created

a helpful HTML page, which will include numer-

ous resources for issues around elder care — this

page will be hosted by the Norwalk Senior Center.

The Chamber expresses its appreciation to all

participating individuals and local companies and

organizations who committed to the 2014 program,

all of the session presenters and hosts, and to Benefit

Planning Services, Fairfield County Bank, Financial

Accounting Foundation, and GE Capital for provid-

ing scholarships for participants from non-profit or-

ganizations. The Chamber also extends thanks to GE

Capital and Dolce Norwalk for their continual gen-

erosity in regards to this program.
