WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE ANCHORAGE SENIOR CENTER IN MARCH 2020
A Message from Gordon Glaser,
Board President
Dear Fellow members,
How to save 600 calories a year, painlessly.
Next me you enter the Anchorage Senior Acvity
Center (ASAC) look up at our entrance roof skylight.
With a careful look, you can spot the translucent tarp covering the roof
to prevent leaking.
We have a 37yearold building with good bones. With appropriate
maintenance and repair it will last another 37 years.
Bond Proposion #7 funds that roof repair, safety upgrades, code compliance and seismic modificaons for the Anchorage
Senior Acvity Center, and the ChugiakEagle River Senior Center, the Loussac and Mt. View Libraries and a bit more.
The enre bond is $5,375,000 with the Anchorage Senior Acvity Center slated for $ 2,750,000 , the largest single item.
The esmated cost of the bond is $1.20 per $100,000 of assessed taxable
property. A $300,000 house would cost an addional $3.60 in property taxes a
year to rere the bond.
An ice cream cone contains about 600 calories and costs about four dollars. We
can maintain and upgrade our Senior Center or buy an ice cream cone.
FYI if you find it difficult to choose, the center’s cafe sells ice cream at $1.25 per
scoop. You can have your Senior Center and ice cream too!
Sim Shalom,
Gordon Glaser
Anchorage Senior Acvity Center Board President

A quote to think about:
“A lile progress each day can add up to big changes.” Unknown
When we dive into the above quote from a fitness prospec"ve, we can do the body good by adding a lile bit of
movement to the body. Even just 5 15 minutes of something into your ac"ve daily lifestyle rou"ne. Whether
that is ge(ng up during commercial breaks or at the end of a chapter of a good book and take a lap around the
house, walking up and down the stairs an extra "me for good measure, or simply coming to ASAC and jumping
on one of the tandem bikes for your desired length of "me. We o,en look at being healthy as spending hours in
the gym, or having to li, heavy weights in order to
accomplish our goals, whatever they may be. In reality,
that can be overwhelming not just to our lifestyle but
our bodies as well.
The next "me you are having a hard "me being ac"ve
say, “well, I just need 5 right now” some"mes that light
and short movement can get your body working to feel
beer, warmer, manage an ache or pain to help you feel
beer to workout longer. And if not, that small amount
of movement was something and definitely counts
towards your movement goal and exercise goals or even
to help maintain the body’s strength, balance, and

WHAT IS GAIT? And how does it affect our posture? Human gait refers to locomoon achieved through the
movement of human limbs. Human gait is defined as bipedal, biphasic forward propulsion of center of gravity
of the human body, in which there are alternate sinuous movements of different segments of the body with
least expenditure of energy. More informaon can be found on Wikipedia.

Congratula"ons Heidi!
We want to congratulate Heidi for running her first Half Marathon for ALS on Super
Bowl Sunday, February 2
nd
, 2020, in Sunny California. Why would Heidi want to run
this half marathon, 13.1 miles? The challenge to see if her body could do it of
course! It wasn't unl Heidi started raising funds for ALS with The Alaska Club that
she found out her grandmother had had ALS. Heidi knew her grandmother had
been sick. Heidi and her brother were in Salem, MA, with their mom, when their
grandma passed away; the same day when oxygen was going to be delivered.
Heidi’s mom said it was a blessing that she passed away within six months of being
diagnosed with ALS. Heidi ran the Surf City Half Marathon to raise funds for
research and awareness for this disease. Pictured is her medal. She ran the race in
2:25:02 quicker than she had calculated! Way to go Heidi!
Let’s all work this year to be successful for our own bodies and physical wellbeing.

Are You a March Lamb or Lion?
Three months is the me it usually takes for most of us to drop our New Year’s resoluonsespecially health
related lifestyle changes. In the fitness industry studies are done yearly to trace the paerns of new gym
memberships and the arion of those qui!ng the gym. As expected, January is flush with new members or
those resolving to return to their rounes faithfully. March and April see a major exodus with about onethird of
new members from January qui!ng in early spring. This places March in the crosshairs of this meframe as a
crical check in point. As we near the end of the first quarter of 2020, are your health, wellness and fitness goals
sll on track? Are the changes you began making to your diet holding? Are you drinking more water like you
promised yourself to in January? Are you taking me to socialize and spend me with others being acve?
It is so very important to note that keeping big changes in our lives is no easy task, which is why there are so
many arcles and expert words of wisdom this me of year about keeping changes small and realisc. Even
when we revisit our goals, call it recalibrang in the present tense, we can adjust for what has worked well and
make small changes for details that have been a struggle. O0en the first pi1all of se!ng and keeping health
related goals is pu!ng an expectaon on ourselves that we are suddenly going to do something every day we
have been doing very lile up to this point. As an example, rather than se!ng a goal of ge!ng to the gym or
exercising every single day, perhaps start with an easier goal of three days per week. If you get more than that,
it is a bonus! Doing moderate cardiovascular exercise such as walking or low intensity classes can be done most
days if not every day. Higher intensity training requires more recovery and therefore may be performed for
limited duraon such as an hour or less with a day of rest or lower intensity acvies between harder workouts.
Total body strength and higher intensity cardio should be done about three mes per week depending on the
individual’s fitness level and abilies.
Drinking more water and eang a healthy diet are acvies we get several changes to do right daily. Carry that
water bole with you and take sips throughout your acve day. Plan meals with friends and family to include
lots of color and variety leaning heavily on fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins along with grains, seeds and
essenal oils. Finally, seek advice and help from experts who can offer general ps for success and answer
specific quesons about how to get and stay healthy, well and fit! We have a few experts in these areas right at
ASAC, including our fitness department, health and wellness department and our nutrion program offering
monthly educaon sessions and individual counseling. See this newsleer or speak
with one of our team members for more informaon. Be well!

Special Enrollment Periods for Part D
As most of you may know the Open Enrollment Period for Part D, prescripon drug coverage, ended

Review the choices below and see if you qualify to enroll or change your coverage under Part D.

Improving Nutri#on Bite by Bite

Have you ever set a nutrion goal so big you did not know how to tackle it? Have you ever felt overwhelmed
with all of the nutrion or diet changes you have been instructed to make? You are not alone!
March is Naonal Nutrion Month and is being celebrated naonwide Bite by Bite.
Incorporang nutrion modificaons can be difficult, however if you can narrow it down to what provides the
most benefit to you and take it slowly, you can be successful! Choose one or two of the following examples and
you are on your way to improving your health, Bite by Bite.
Increase Fruits and Vegetables (heart health, weight management, cancer preven'on)
• Add a handful of frozen or fresh blueberries to hot cereal, cold cereal or yogurt
• Add some frozen or fresh spinach to scrambled eggs
• Throw a handful of frozen veggies into prepared soup
• Don’t forget the le+uce and tomato on your sandwich!
• Only ¼ ½ of your dinner plate needs to be reserved for canned, frozen or fresh vegetables!
Reduce Saturated Fat (heart health, weight management)
• Game meat and fish are always a win!
• Take the skin off your chicken and turkey (dark meat is fine when the skin is removed)
• Buy low fat dairy products (not fat free)
• Eat hard cheese or low fat mozzarella
• Keep all beef to a minimum if possible (once or twice a month)
• Limit fast food or leave the fries behind
Increase Protein (healing, strength and weight management)
• Add egg whites to your hot cereal
• Scrambled eggs for lunch or dinner? Why not!
• A roasted chicken equals extra protein all week!
• Choose Greek yogurt for more protein
• Egg salad, chicken salad or salmon salad are all
delicious and easy choices!

Coronavirus COVID19 and What You Can Do
From the cdc.gov website February 18, 2020
What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, ca$le,
cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERSCoV,
SARSCoV, and now with this new virus (named COVID19)
Outbreaks of novel virus infec-ons among people are always of public health concern. The risk from these outbreaks
depends on characteris-cs of the virus, including how well it spreads between people, the severity of resul-ng illness, and
the medical or other measures available to control the impact of the virus (for example, vaccine or treatment medica-ons).
The poten-al public health threat posed by COVID19 is high, both globally and to the United States. The fact that this
disease has caused illness, including illness resul-ng in death, and sustained persontoperson spread in China is
concerning. These factors meet two of the criteria of a pandemic. It’s unclear how the situa-on will unfold, but risk is
dependent on exposure. For the general American public, who are unlikely to be exposed to this virus, the immediate
health risk from COVID19 is considered low at this -me. While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public
is believed to be low at this -me, everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat.
• CDC recommends ge5ng a flu vaccine, taking everyday preven-ve ac-ons to help stop the spread of germs, and
taking flu an-virals if prescribed.
• If you have been in China or have been exposed to someone sick with COVID19 in the last 14 days, you will face
some limita-ons on your movement and ac-vity. Please follow instruc-ons during this -me. Your coopera-on is
integral to the ongoing public health response to try to slow spread of this virus. If you develop COVID19
symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a
COVID19 pa-ent.
Before a Pandemic
• Store a two week supply of water and food.
• Periodically check your regular prescrip-on drugs to ensure a con-nuous supply in your home.
• Have any nonprescrip-on drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies,
cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.
• Get copies and maintain electronic versions of health records from doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and other sources
and store them, for personal reference. Get help accessingelectronic health records.
• Talk with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be
needed to care for them in your home.
During a Pandemic
• Limit the Spread of Germs and Prevent Infec-on
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from ge5ng sick too.
• Cover your mouth and nosewith a -ssue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from ge5ng
sick.
• Washing your hands o=en will help protect you from germs.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Prac-ce other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically ac-ve, manage your stress, drink plenty of
fluids, and eat nutri-ous food.
