Senior Section Strategic Plan
2018-22

We envision a cohesive community of learners, founded
on supportive relationships.
Our community will be identified by its consistency
in perceptions of value across fields of endeavour,
its understanding of learning that embraces all experience
as opportunities for growth, its willingness to take risks in learning
and its recognition of risk-taking in others.
It will be led by students who model discipline, engagement and achievement.

The drafting of the new Senior Section Strategic Plan, 2018-22, is well under way.
Collection of the data that informs the plan commenced in October 2016. That data was collected in formal, one-to-one interviews with Secondary students, in staff reflection on the previous strategic plan and Teaching and Learning plan, and in staff and parent meetings.
The plan’s focus is on growth: in faith, mindset, student numbers, subject choice, leadership and, at its heart, academic application and performance.
Key features of the plan include
• extension of the growth mindset as a cultural development, with a view to academic application and achievement;
• differentiation at the heart of staff professional learning and classroom observations;
• development of student leadership and

The biblical focus of the Senior Strategic Plan, 2018-22, from Colossians 2:2-3:
My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order
that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
the opportunities to lead, notably in vertical homerooms;
• an ongoing focus on attendance and student retention.
The plan recognises that academic development is and should be at the heart of our school. It responds to needs, identified in community consultation, to
• leverage positive staff/student relationships to lift students’ academic outcomes;
• develop awareness in students of personal potential and identification with learning processes;
• develop notions of what’s valuable in our community, particularly in the measurement of success across all areas: academic, sport,
performing arts, leadership and others. It recognises that all gifts are blessings.
• The Senior Section Strategic Plan, 2018-22, will be presented at the Association meeting on Thursday, 26 October 2017. We hope to see you there.

OCS NAPLAN SUCCESS
We were quite pleased with our NAPLAN results overall this year. Students in Year 7 and Year 9 achieved above the State in all areas. Reading was a standout for all cohorts with our students achieving above the state averages in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Last year we set the goal to have 15% of every cohort achieving results in the top two bands and we are pleased to announce that we met that requirement in every year group. Well done to all those students. We were also aiming to have no students achieving in the bottom band for their cohort. This was achieved in at least four areas for each cohort. For many of the cohorts it was no more than 1 or 2 students falling into the bottom bands. In Year 9 there was only one area that we had students in the lowest band and that was in spelling.

Our goal for NAPLAN in 2018 is to continue this upward trend and we are wanting to improve the percentages in the top bands by 10%. As well as decrease the number of students achieving below benchmark in each cohort. The section newsletters will be publishing specific details relating to their cohorts next week. If you have any questions about the NAPLAN results please contact the section coordinators or myself on 63627258. Sharyn Stockton
Some students, through no fault of their own, experience great difficulty with reading and writing. In an examination setting, you can imagine that such a disability can create a frustrating challenge for a student who is attempting to communicate his/her understanding and knowledge. One way in which a student can be assisted in completing exams is to provide helpers to read and/or write for the student and we are asking for volun-teers to assist us in this task. It is not necessary to know anything about the subject; all that is required is for you to read straight from the exami-nation paper and/or write down, word for word, the student’s answer. You are not required to assist the student in any other way. Teaching staff are always accessible to assist with any issues.The exams are for Years 7-10 only and will be held on Friday 3rd, Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th October. You can choose your days and times to suit. We already have a number of very reliable volunteers but we still require more! If you would like to find out more about what is involved (no obli-gation), you are most welcome to call Brigitte Ward (Learning Support) at the school on 6362-7258 within the next few days. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

TERM 4
Physics at OCS, 2018
This exciting step has been taken in response to the momentum developed in our Stage 5 iStem course. Students’ engagement in iStem is clear, so we have decided to move our curriculum goals for Physics classes forward, to commence in the coming year.
Mr Les Follent will teach the Physics class in a timetabled, in-school arrangement, supported by materials from Dubbo Distance Education. Mr Follent will run face-to-face lessons
each week in the theory and practical components of the course. He will guide and support students in assessment tasks.
We are excited about this new direction and the opportunity it presents to our students.
If you have any questions concerning the new course, please contact Miss Sharyn Stockton at the school on 02 6362 7258.
Physics will be included in OCS’ Stage 6 subjects from 2018.
