SCHOOL CALENDAREltham High School – Sporting and Recreation Precinct Master Plan Development:

I have previously informed our community that we have received some funding in this year’s State Budget to develop a Sporting and Recreation Precinct Masterplan.

This is now well and truly on the way. A number of community sporting and recreation organisations as well as the Shire of Nillumbik have come together to discuss the possibilities for the redevelopment of the Eltham High School Sporting Facilities in a way that would benefit both the school and the community. A great deal of goodwill has been shown by all involved and through our collaborative contribution we have agreed to appoint Kate Maddock from the OTIUM Planning Group as our preferred consultant. Kate comes to us well qualified and highly recommended having a deep knowledge of the area through her previous work on the development of the Fabbro Fields’ Masterplan as well as the Masterplan for the redevelopment of the Eltham Community Centre Precinct, and most recently the Eltham Leisure Centre.

Kate has provided the Planning Group with a proposal and is currently in the process of consulting with key community stakeholders. Following this, Kate will prepare a report with some recommendations, which will then go to architects for the development of the Masterplan.

Work is progressing well and at a quick pace. I will keep you informed as this work proceeds.

Symphonic Band Tour

The Symphonic Band will be heading off next Sunday, 14 August on its tour of Sydney. Our students have been working very hard throughout the year and most certainly even more so since their Music Camp at Healesville in preparation for this tour, and the upcoming Royal South Street events. This is a great opportunity for our students to practice their repertoire to a number and range of audiences as they perfect their skills and playing for the upcoming competitions. I wish all our students and music staff all the very best as they embark on this experience and I trust that they will have a great time.

The Pre-South Street Concert will take place in the Drama Space of the school on Thursday, 25 August, starting at 7:00 pm.

Year 7 City Experience

The Year 7 City Experience camps continue. Once again I was very fortunate to meet the second group of students and teachers for dinner last Thursday. A number of students took it in turns to share with me their experiences of the previous two days and once again they were full of enthusiasm and extremely positive. They were able to connect their experiences to the curriculum that they had engaged with back at school. I congratulate and thank once again all the members of the Junior School Team as well as all our teachers and support staff that participated in the experience. The next group of students will be heading off on Wednesday 17 August and I am sure that they will be just as excited as the previous two groups.

Aerosol deodorant at school

Many students and staff at Eltham High School suffer from asthma, and a number suffer from severe allergies and anaphylaxis. Aerosols and sprays can act as triggers for people who suffer from these conditions, resulting in symptoms such as asthma attacks, headaches, including migraines, and in extreme cases, anaphylactic shock. In addition, aerosols can be dangerous as they contain flammable liquids and can also cause harm if inhaled.

For these reasons, aerosol deodorants are banned from school premises and all excursions, after school activities and sporting events. This information has been communicated to students earlier in the year, and we are seeking family support in enforcing this message through the school community. For students wishing to bring deodorant to school and school camps, it is requested that roll-on deodorant be available for school use.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Year 9 Exams

During week 8 of Term 2 all Year 9 students will undertake exams in English and Maths. Students studying Indonesian or French will also do an exam during that week. The philosophy behind these exams is that students will benefit from some experience of the formal exam process, and that focussing on the core, year long subjects will provide an informative experience without impacting unnecessarily on their other subjects. Information regarding the content of these exams will be provided by the relevant classroom teachers, and information about the exact time and place of these exams will be provided in an upcoming newsletter.

Inter school Sport

Year 9 & 10 Round Robin

This week, students represented the school in a number of sports. The Intermediate Sports Round Robin against our fellow local schools took place on Tuesday. We had some fantastic results with the Boys Table Tennis winning through to the NMR Finals. Both the boys and girls basketball teams will play off with St Helena for the opportunity to represent the Nillumbik District at the NMR Finals. Congratulations to our Futsal team who made the final.

Junior Girls AFL (Year 7, 8, 9) and Year 8 Boys AFL

After great success at the Nillumbik Round Robin, the Junior Girls and Year 8 Boys AFL teams headed to the NMR finals where they competed with schools from the Northern Metro Region. The girls played fantastic football all day, winning all matches and advancing to the NMR Grand Final, held on Tuesday at Laurimar Town Park. The girls played Melbourne Girl’s College in the final who unfortunately were too strong on the day. Congratulations girls on finishing as the runner up at the NMR level. A fantastic achievement!

The Year 8 Boys defeated Northcote in their first game but lost to the eventual winners, Epping, in their second game.

All the Eltham High School representatives were fantastic throughout all the games played and competed with great team spirit, displaying exceptional sportsmanship

Senior Girls Table Tennis

The Senior Girls Table Tennis represented our school at the NMR finals on Thursday at the Coburg Table Tennis Centre. Sienna Gunning (Year 11 Stewart), Dani Di Peta (Year 11 Everard), Ellen Horsley (Year 11 Everard) and Rui Kinoshita (Year 11 Everard) won their first match against Gladstone Park 6:0, with the girls sensing an opportunity to advance to the State Finals. Unfortunately, they came up against stronger opposition in the following rounds and suffered a couple of narrow losses, including loosing to the eventual champions Macleod.

Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies - Cross Country Skiing at Lake Mountain

Fresh snowfall greeted the two Year 11 OES classes at Lake Mountain on Tuesday for our Annual XC Skiing day. Light snow was still falling as the groups advanced up the mountain in their morning lessons. Each group worked on their skills whilst climbing higher on the mountain, with fresh, untracked snow a delight to ski on. As the day continued, the sky cleared and sunny conditions took over. A short lunch break was followed by more touring along the trails of Lake Mountain. The day finished with a magnificent descent to the base area - a well deserved reward after the hard work of climbing earlier in the day. The bus ride home was very quiet as many students took the opportunity to relax after a fantastic but exhausting day.

FIRST AID Head Lice

The school has been notified that a number of students have recently been treated for head lice. Families are asked to please take a moment to check your child’s hair and commence appropriate treatment where necessary.

According to the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009, children with head lice can be readmitted to school after treatment has commenced.

The Department of Education and Training recommends a child with head lice can be treated one evening and return to school the next day, even if there are still some eggs present. There is no need to miss school because of head lice.

WORKING BEE The Grounds Committee has scheduled the only working bee for term 3 on Sunday 21 August from 9:00am until 12:30pm with both morning tea and a barbeque lunch provided. Again we have a range of tasks suitable for our volunteer group so hopefully all activities will be completed by the end of the day. Listed below are the tasks identified as priorities for this working bee.

• The U-Shaped sitting wall constructed on the Bell Street fence needs to have 3 sitting tops trimmed and affixed.

• 180 plants need to be provided with new homes between rooms 902 and 904. These plants need to be bagged, staked and finally mulched.

• Weeding, pruning and mulching needs to be completed on the garden beds adjust to the tennis courts and the performance centre.

• Brushcutting and mowing needs to occur in a range of locations across the campus precinct.

• The environmental area adjacent to the tennis courts needs a clean-up and a brushcut with weeds to be removed.

• Another 2m3 of soil needs to be added to the garden bed adjacent to room 902.• Some of the gum trees planted adjacent to the tennis courts need to be

straightened up and re-staked.
