Newsletter Senior School Issue 1 September 2017 029 2077 8936 www.stjohnscollegecardiff.com @SJCCardiff Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to the first of our E-Newsletters. I hope that you will enjoy reading the contents as much as I did. Your children have certainly been extremely busy! The articles provide a true refection of a happy, productive, learning community. Please do not hesitate to share ‘good news’ stories with the School for future editions - despite any misplaced humility and protestations from your sons and daughters! We like to recognise and celebrate success in all its forms: who does not respond to praise? I would like to thank the many parents who attended Monday evening’s inaugural Headmaster’s Reception; there was a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere of collegiality. As I said, you and your children are our best marketeers, and we value your feedback on all aspects of the School. Please may I encourage you to share with family, friends and colleagues the date of our Sixth Form Open Evening - 4.30pm - 7.00pm, Thursday 12th October, with a brief presentation from myself, our Heads of Lower and Upper Sixth, and the Senior Prefects at 5.30pm. We shall be sharing with your for the first time the additional A Levels and BTEC courses that will be introduced, so all very exciting. May I wish you and your families a very happy, healthy and blessed month ahead until our next instalment. Warmest wishes, Gareth P. Lloyd, VI Form News The new term has begun at pace for the St John’s Sixth Form students under the guidance of year heads Mme Lhermitte and Mr Cooper. A programme of talks by former pupils began straight away with visits from: Sophie T (now reading Law at Reading); Pierre R (Business Degree from Birmingham and now working on his MA in international Relations); Ethan H (Medicine at King’s College, London); Natasha S (Architecture at Cambridge) and a live video feed from Daniela M (History at Warwick and taking her year abroad in Singapore) and it was wonderful to see our alumni again. They gave indispensable, practical advice on a wide range of topics to our budding undergraduates, including tips on living costs and loans, accommodation, choosing a course, independent learning, applications, personal statements, clubs and societies, and socialising, all providing a lively sense of the reality of university life. More speakers are visiting soon with a current Medical student from Cardiff University and also a group of six students who will address R16 through to Upper VI on the range of degree courses available. Mr Cooper, Head of Upper Sixth
