CGGS PHILOSOPHY FOR CO-CURRICULUM The Co-Curricular program is an integral part of the educational experience at CGGS and includes all activities that support, enhance or complement the formal academic curriculum. It is based on the philosophy that personal growth occurs when students and staff can access a broad range of experiences. Success in future studies, employment and life itself can result for those who have a balanced approach to work and broader social commitments and who have developed their capacity to work effectively with others. Our program offers each girl the opportunity to explore and cultivate their passions and interests, to be inspired to discover their own potential, to showcase their talents and develop leadership, their self-esteem and pride. Our program offers teachers, parents and volunteers the opportunity to build relationships, to enhance connectedness with our students and to further develop their own personal and professional journey.

The Philosophy is based on these beliefs:

A range of co-curricular activities that provide opportunities for students to explore

their passions and interests, to find new pastimes and to develop leadership skills;

Activities that are designed to complement and balance the curriculum and at the

same time encourage participation by all students regardless of their skill level;

The program offers a variety of competitive and non-competitive activities and

promotes the importance of physical and intellectual activities as a means of

enhancing a student’s general well-being;

The importance of social interaction across year groups promoting a connectedness

with a range of students within the School;

The importance of being a member of the School community, promoting a sense of

belonging, and a commitment to other students and staff participating in that

activity; and

All activities offered in the Co-curricular program give attention to the value of

active participation in the School, the local community and the global community.

CO-CURRICULAR SPORTS PROGRAM AND POLICY

(SENIOR SCHOOL) CGGS values participation in Co-curricular sport for students to:

develop physical skills;

enhance their wellbeing;

develop skills in teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and competition;

take responsibility for themselves and others through commitment and teamwork;

and

enjoy the physical activity and the social experience of sport in a positive

environment.

The following sports are offered as part of the program. Sports teams are entered into local competitions where available and appropriate:

Summer - Terms 1 and 4 Winter - Terms 2 and 3

Senior School Basketball Dragon Boating Indoor Hockey Summer Netball Orienteering Rowing Sailing Futsal

Basketball Hockey (Outdoor) Netball Orienteering Football Touch Football Water Polo

The Co-curricular Program also offers students the opportunity to participate in Intramural activities. These are activities are generally run on a short course basis with no competition, training or weekend commitment, and may include activities such as - Fitness sessions, Badminton, Mountain Biking, Zumba, Bellydance. (See pages xx – xx for more information). The Program also offers some Extra Curricular Activities which are offered by outside providers without CGGS staff appointed to oversee the program, for example Tae Kwon Do. These activities do not come under the CGGS Sports Policy. Participation in a co-curricular activity is not compulsory, however students are strongly encouraged to undertake a sporting activity during the year. For sporting activities that participate in local competitions, teams will be chosen on the basis of set selection procedures which will be published on Studywiz. All students must be allowed to trial for Winter sport regardless of their Summer sport involvement. Trials will not clash with scheduled competition times and, wherever possible, the Teacher-in-Charge of the sport should be flexible towards the requirements of other sports.

Each sport offered will be co-ordinated by a Teacher-in-Charge (TIC) who will be responsible for allocating coaches and managers to each team. Coaches will be allocated to teams on the basis of qualifications and experience.

Practices are generally held outside school hours, once a week on weekdays. Most sports hold their training session in the PE Centre of the Senior or Junior School. Sports that have their training sessions, at an off-site venue (eg: Rowing, Dragon Boats & Hockey), a school bus is provided to take the students to training and parents then collect their daughter from that venue at the completion of training. Competitions may be on weekends, or evenings during the week. Students must arrive at competitions at the time specified by the coach. Once a student has made a commitment to participate in a particular sport, the student is expected to attend all practice sessions and one match per week, barring illness or injury. Some combinations of sports may not be possible due to clashes of practice and/or match times. It is the student’s responsibility to identify clashes and consult with the TIC early in the season. A copy of the School’s Co-Curricular Commitment Contract will be on Studywiz and MUST be completed by each student and their parents prior to the commencement of each season. (See Appendix XX for sample). It is important that both parents and student are aware of the consequence if there is a breach of that contract in unexplained non attendance at both training and competition days. Should a student experience ongoing ill health and require withdrawal from an activity, notification from the parents must be in writing and addressed to the TIC of the sport. If parents wish a student to be absent from a match due to a pre-arranged activity, a note should be given to the Manager/Coach and the TIC of the sport at least a week in advance. Absence notes are also required for absence from training. In the event of illness or some other sudden reason for non attendance at a competition, students must notify the manager or coach by phone. All team members must have and wear the appropriate team uniform for matches. The team uniform or the CGGS PE uniform may be worn for practices. Only the School tracksuit pants and tracksuit top/rugby jumper may be worn as outer garments at competition venues or at training. Correct footwear must be worn at both training and competitions. Students travelling to out of school sports events in PE clothes will have to change from full uniform into PE clothes at the end of classes and not wear PE gear during class time. Appropriate behaviour is expected of all players and their parents both on and off the field. Students must remember they are representing the School and display a high standard of sportsmanship as well as courtesy and respect at all times. Discipline procedures will be in line with usual School procedures. Players exhibiting inappropriate behaviour will be referred to the Head of Senior School by the TIC. Whenever possible there will be a staff member in attendance at competitions to encourage and support teams. The structure of competitions comes under the guidance of the various external sporting associations. If there is change to this structure, the Sports Policy Committee needs to consider the impact on both staff and students.

While CGGS takes measures to make sporting activities as safe as possible for all participants, there is an inherent risk of injury involved in participating in any sporting activity, whether at training or in competitions.

Page 7: SENIOR SCHOOL CO-CURRICULAR SPORT AND ACTIVITIES School Co... · CGGS PHILOSOPHY FOR CO-CURRICULUM The Co-Curricular program is an integral part of the educational experience at CGGS

7

It is the responsibility of the TIC of each sporting activity to carry out a risk management audit before students compete or train in the given sport. The purpose of the risk management analysis is to make sporting practices, activities and games as safe as possible. Risk management processes are used to identify hazards, assess and then eliminate or control risks associated with excursions. The degree of planning required is influenced by the nature of the sport, the level of risk and the student group. For sports that have previously been planned and conducted, previous risk management plans may be reviewed and reused. An important component of the risk management process is consultation, which should include staff, and where appropriate external venue providers and parents. School Representative Competitions As well as fielding teams in regular on-going local competitions the School is also a member of the ACT Primary Schools Sports Association (ACTPSSA) and the ACT Secondary Schools Sports Association (ACTSSSA) and fields teams in relevant competitions. The Senior School also fields teams in Associated Southern Colleges (ASC) competitions. Any student who attends CGGS is eligible to try out for any external representative team (eg PSSA, ACTSSSA, ASC). When CGGS selects teams to participate in interschool competitions, first preference will be given to students who play for the school in the relevant sport during that year. Participation in a school team is conditional upon the School being able to provide a level of competition that is commensurate with their ability. Where this is not possible the student can still be considered for PSSA, ACTSSSA or ASC representation. In exceptional circumstances, where a student’s geographical location, other commitments or injury has prevented the student from playing for the School, then they will still be considered for selection. The final decision for team selection rests with the Co-curricular Sports Coordinator. School participation at representative competitions is at the School’s discretion, taking into account factors such as the level of interest, the strength of the teams, the timing of the competition(s) and the time out of School. From time to time the School is invited to participate in other competitions outside these Associations and may, at its discretion, select and send teams to those competitions. As information about other sports, not offered at the School, comes to hand the School will endeavour to pass on the information and it will be an individual choice as to whether or not students choose to participate in selection trials for the sport even if it does not come under the Sports Policy. Note that students may not participate in CGGS programs until they are enrolled at CGGS. (In the case of a student fully enrolled for the following school year, that student is eligible to play in a team sport that runs across term 4 and into term 1 of the following year.) As soon as a student’s enrolment at Canberra Girls’ Grammar School ceases, so does any participation as a player in the CGGS Sports Program.

Costs of sport will vary from sport to sport. The fee will be charged to participating students Term accounts. The fee charged for each sport includes registration, insurance, coach, equipment and umpire/referee levy.

SAMPLE LETTER AND COMMITMENT CONTRACT FOR SPORTS

Dear Parents and Students At CGGS we value the importance of Co-curricular Sport. To support the aims of our School Sports Policy we are asking that both students and parents sign a commitment contract. Please read the following contract carefully before deciding to undertake a co-curricular sport. The School would like to ensure that students and their parents have given careful consideration to the responsibilities that go with undertaking a sport and the required level of commitment to the team. This contract must be filled in and signed by both the student and the parent/guardian prior to registration. Should a student be unable to attend a training session, a written note or e-mail must be sent to the Teacher-in-Charge of the sport prior to the day set aside for training. Should a student be unable to attend a game or match, a written note or e-mail must be sent to the Teacher-in-Charge of the sport one week in advance so that a substitute player may be found for the game or match, remembering that there may be games scheduled in our holiday breaks. Should a student suddenly become ill, an e-mail must be sent to the Teacher-in-Charge of the sport so that a substitute may be found and the student does not breach the contract. Should a student already be undertaking significant training for a sport and it is not possible to attend the prescribed training sessions for the sport, a letter should be sent by the parent and external coach who outline the level and type of training which is being undertaken outside of School. The Teacher-in-Charge and Sports Coordinator will negotiate appropriate training with the parent and coach. It is important to note that a student who fails to attend training sessions or a game, without notification, will, in the first instance, receive an after-school detention and a letter will be sent home to the parents indicating the nature of the breach. Should a student fail to attend training sessions or a game, without notification, for a second time, she may be withdrawn from the team, receive a Saturday morning detention and a letter will be sent home to the parents indicating the nature of the breach. Students who demonstrate inappropriate behaviour or attitude during training sessions or games will receive an after-school detention and a letter will be sent home to the parents indicating the nature of the breach. Continued demonstration of inappropriate behaviour or attitude during training sessions or games will lead to the student being withdrawn from the team and receiving a Saturday morning detention. Students are required to wear the correct sports uniform to training sessions and games. Failure to do so will lead to an after-school detention and a letter home to the parents indicating the nature of the breach.

CODES OF CONDUCT FOR SPORTS AT CGGS PLAYERS

Participate for your own enjoyment

Abide by the rules of the sport

Don’t argue with referees or officials. You may ask your coach to approach the

referee/umpire or official during a break or after the competition

Be a good sport and be gracious in victory and defeat

Be a positive team member

Treat all players, coaches, managers, parents, referees/umpires and officials with

respect – intolerance, rudeness, poor language and bullying are not acceptable

Focus and work hard at training and games

Training sessions and games are compulsory in accordance with the CGGS commitment

contract, advise coach, manager or TIC of any foreseen absence

Look after any item of uniform that the school provides

Abide by the relevant association/district or ACT Code of Conduct

PARENTS/GUARDIANS/SPECTATORS

Remember that children participate in sport for their own enjoyment, not yours

Encourage children to participate – do not force them

Acknowledge a good effort by your own child or any other player

Encourage your child to play by the rules

Never ridicule, criticise or yell at your own child any other player

Set an example for your child of good spectator conduct

Respect the decisions of referees and officials and teach children to do likewise

Support your volunteer coaches, managers and school administrators

Respect the authority of the coach. CGGS discourages parental sideline coaching

because:

o a parent can send mixed messages to a student, and they don’t know who to

believe. The student will be a better player with only one coach.

o a parent may only have the interests of one student in mind, whereas the coach

has the interests of the whole team.

o a parent may not know what the coach has discussed with a student/s, or the

reasons why the team are doing something in a certain way.

o a parent can cause friction between themselves and a strong-minded student.

o a parent may inadvertently frustrate the officials and possibly some of the other

team members and parents.

Respect the opposition and respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person

regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion

Never use verbal or physical abuse

Abide by the relevant association/district or ACT Code of Conduct

Exercise duty of care when leaving players at training or matches

COACHES/TEACHERS

Remember that junior sport is for fun and enjoyment and that winning should not be

the main motivation

Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing the game

Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport and teach your players to so the same

Be reasonable in your demands on players time, energy and enthusiasm

Whenever possible group players competitively according to size, skills and maturity

Plan and prepare for practice sessions to provide variety, fun, enjoyment and skill

development

Make young people aware of the positive benefits of participation in sporting activities

Avoid overplaying players. All players need and deserve equal time and opportunity

Be positive to your players and treat them equally and with respect

Encourage team respect for the ability of opponents and for the judgment of officials

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender,

ability, cultural background or religion

Recognise the importance of injury, always refer and follow the advice of the players

physician

Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and

necessary for the players skill development

Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices

and principles of growth and development of young people.

Abide by the rules of the game, the association/district/ACT governing body and the

CGGS Code of Conduct

Demonstrate good sportsmanship and ensure your behaviour is acceptable

OTHER SPORTING GUIDELINES These guidelines are recommended for use both during training and games. BLOOD POLICY GUIDELINES Bleeding players must be removed immediately from the field of play until the bleeding is controlled and the wound covered with a waterproof dressing. Individual disposable wipes should always be used and First Aid kits should contain disposable gloves. Blood soaked clothing should be replaced by clean clothing. HYDRATION GUIDELINES Coach/Manager should ensure that water is available at all venues at all times and if necessary, water carriers should be provided during events. Scheduled breaks should be used to actively promote the benefits of hydration to participants. Coach/Manager should encourage all students to bring individual water bottles for every training/competition. During events, these should be located immediately next to the competition area to enable competitors to help themselves. *Thirst is a poor indicator of fluid need* - *hydrate before, during and after play* SUN SMART POLICY Students in the School are encouraged to protect their skin against the sun's ultraviolet rays whenever possible during school time and school activities. Childhood and adolescent exposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun is a major contributory factor in the later development of skin cancer. Levels of ultraviolet radiation are particularly high in Canberra owing to our altitude, clear air and long hours of daily sunshine. It is emphasised that students are responsible for their own protection against skin damage by wearing sunhats and sunscreen. The School will do its best to encourage students not to get sunburnt. When outside, students will be required to wear the regulation sun hat, and will be encouraged to keep in the shade. Whenever possible, activities will be held in the shade. The School will: require the purchase of the regulation sun hat by all students; whenever possible ensure that adequate shade is provided at sporting carnivals and outdoor events; incorporate programmes on skin cancer prevention into its Health Curriculum; and reinforce the Sun Smart Policy through newsletters, parent meetings, student and teacher activities. When enrolling a student, parents will be: informed of the Sun Smart Policy and required to purchase the regulation hat(s); and

encouraged to provide SPF 15+ broad spectrum water-resistant sun screen for their child’s use.

INTRAMURAL CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES RATIONALE: In line with the philosophy for Co-curricular activities at CGGS, a range of non-competitive physical activities are also offered for students who prefer not to be involved in competitive sports but yet enjoy the opportunity to be involved in a range of different physical activities. There is no weekend commitment with Intramural Co-curricular activities. Students are provided with a range of active pursuits in a supportive and non-competitive environment. The focus is on the health and fitness benefit derived from doing the activity in a safe social setting. While the emphasis is on participation, there is also an opportunity for creating pathways to better integrate girls into the Co-curricular Sports Program. This would also help to alleviate barriers that preclude girls’ participation in regular physical activity and sport. The aim is to provide a wide range of activities to encourage as many students as possible to participate. The Intramural program is a flexible program with activities being offered on a term by term basis or a short course option. The School is open to suggestions of different activities to offer, depending on demand, logistics, cost and staffing resources.
