senior school This edition of College Connections gives us a great opportunity to thank and congratulate many people for their involvement in another successful Graduation Week at BCC. Firstly, and most importantly, the 151 Year 12 students were absolutely outstanding in the way they celebrated with respect, dignity and pride for their school. Secondly, the staff (academic and non-academic) who supported both Laura and I in making the logistics of the massive 3 days run very smoothly. There are many others who we would like to personally thank and congratulate.

9/10 Valedictory On Thursday 20 October, all Year 9 and 10 students joined the students from the Senior School in attending the Valedictory Assembly held at the Regent Multiplex. The reports we have received from both staff and students was that this event was very worthwhile. It was valuable for our Year 9 and 10 students to hear some of the challenges that our Year 12 students have faced over the past 12 months. Yet, perhaps more importantly, the Year 10 students heard important value statements repeated over and over by so many of the Year 12s. Statements that demonstrated an overwhelming sense love for family, gratitude for the opportunities afforded them and a recognition that they are the beneficiaries of a whole community of hard workers, including their parents, their teachers and themselves. All at 9/10 would like to congratulate the graduating class of 2016 and we look forward confidently in the knowledge that our current Year 9 and 10 students will continue on their own pathways toward becoming thoughtful, caring and hardworking adult member of our community. Just like many of our Year 12 students. Year 10 Examinations The Year 10 examinations begin next week. We have had two meetings with the Year 10s discussing how they should be preparing for these exams. House Teachers have also worked with students helping them develop workable study timetables.

Study at Home Over the Year 10 examination period, students will have times when they have no examinations scheduled. During these times, they are welcome to study at home. As a family, you will need to decide if studying at home is the best approach for your son or daughter. For some students, those who have appropriate study regimes at home, this option can be advantageous. For others, the distractions of home may interfere with their exam preparation. If a decision is made to study at home, we suggest that some clear guidelines are agreed to, so that everyone in the house is aware of the expectations. Some sort of agreed study plan or timetable posted in a prominent position within the home can be a good starting point.

If students decide to stay at school during the times when they do not have examinations, they will be expected to be engaged in quiet study in either the library or the 9/10 study area during the times where they would, under normal circumstances, have class. Breaks will be held at normal recess and lunch times. If students decide to study at home, they must inform the school of their intention to do so. This, of course, is essential information for our attendance records and emergency procedures. Please click here to complete the Year 10 Permission to Study at Home form. Christmas Hamper Christmas Hampers have again been organised this year to help local families who may be struggling in the lead up to, and throughout, the Christmas period. A number of baskets have been placed in the 9/10 Study Area. All families are being asked to contribute some non-perishable items that can be added to this collection. If you are able to contribute something, please ask your son or daughter to place it in one of these baskets. All contributions will be handed over to UnitingCare for distribution. middle school The Middle School is incredibly proud of the achievements of a number of our students in activities outside of school. Whilst we are able to keep track of in-school activities, often Middle Schoolers are doing very well in their out-of-school pursuits and we always appreciate being kept in the loop. Usually we will share the latest news and achievements at assembly and in their Learning Mentor classes. Here are some of what Middle Schoolers have been involved in in recent times. Shogo and Takumi Trevena competed at the Vic Country Championships on Saturday 20 August. Takumi Trevena (Year 8) 1st in 100 Freestyle, 1st 100 Butterfly, 2nd in 100 Individual Medley, 2nd in 200 Individual Medley, 2nd in 200 Freestyle and 4th in 100 Backstroke. Shogo Trevena (Year 8) 2nd in 100 Freestyle, 2nd in 100 Butterfly, 1st in 100 IM, 1st 200 IM, 1st in 200 Freestyle, 1st in 100 Backstroke and 1st in 100 Breaststroke. Kira Mason (Year 6) came 1st at South Street Competition in the Year 11-14 Pop and Rock Category. Tallulah Jakins (Year 7) received Third Place in the Disney under 14 section at South Street eisteddfod. We are very proud of Tallulah’s first singing competition achievement. Tallulah also recently performed at Suttons on Sturt Street and from all reports did an excellent job. Ahlia Bailo (Year 7) won the Japanese Manga and Anime cultural poster competition. Her creative beautiful art work was selected as No. 3 in the City of Ballarat. William Quartermain (Year 8) has gained selection in the Football Federation Victoria (FFV) refereeing academy. This is a fine achievement and involves training weekly in Melbourne as well as several games of refereeing per week, including national tournaments. Further to this, William refereed a number of senior BAS games this year. Will has also been recognised as a FIFA academy referee. Ruby De Ruiter (Year 7) won a Silver Medal at the National Taekwondo Championships. They were held in Victoria for the first time in six years in Bendigo. The gold medal winner was from WA. Teak Grogan (Year 8) came 2nd in the Oceania Karate Championship over the holidays in New Caledonia, a great achievement. After being selected as one of only two in his age group in Australia. Teak was in the 12/13 yo over 55kg (heavy weights) division against kids from New Zealand and New Caledonia and managed to make his way through to the final. Teak finished with a Silver medal narrowly losing 2 points to 1. Nonetheless, making a final in a competition of this standard is an amazing achievement that impressed the other Australian coaches no end. With the season now over, Teak can look back on Gold medals in the Australian Open and National Championships, Silver in the National Schools and Universities Championships, Victorian State Championships and various gold and silvers in smaller local competitions. Reward for such a fantastic year is now the opportunity to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships in July 2017 in Croatia. Jules Matthews (Year 7), as a bottom-ager, participated in and gained selection for the U16 Selection Camp for the Auroras team, which represents Australia in the International Dragon Boating Federation World Championships to be held in Kunming, China in August 2017. Kelsey Josephs (Year 8) continues to impress with her equestrian achievements. Over the Term 3 holidays, she rode really well in the National Inter-schools Championships in Sydney and came 11th overall. She came home and finished off the northern zone taking out the series with a win at Hurstbridge. She came first in both her tests and won jackpot champion, winning a rug as well as a win in the next level known as the Novice Test.

performing arts Dance Alexandra Moore awarded contract with the Australian Ballet Company Old Collegian, Ally Moore, has received a contract with the Australian Ballet Company for their 2017 season. Ally will graduate from the Australian Ballet School at the end 2016 after studying there for the past four years. Only two female contracts were awarded for 2017 with Ally receiving one of them. Chelsea Stewart and Ada Sayasane accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School for 2017 Both girls have had an excellent year and achieved some outstanding accolades. They will leave us in 2017 to pursue full time dance training at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. This will see them balance their academic studies with their dance training in the same institution. Unit 3&4 Solo Performance exams The Dance students performed their VCE solos at The Department of Education’s Performing Arts complex in Collingwood on Friday 14 October 2016. All students were confident and pleased with their performances and were well prepared for these examinations. They received assistance and feedback from external VCE Dance teachers who worked with them as part of a Master Class in the lead up to these examinations. Thank you to our 2016 Dance Captains I would like to take this opportunity to thank this year’s Dance Captains, Sammy Mitchell and Beth Tucker. The girls have been outstanding ambassadors for our dance program throughout their time at College participating in Musicals, Showcases, Aerobics team, Dance Troupe, completed VCE Dance and performed at assemblies and events. The have consistently been fantastic role models for our younger students and have been a tremendous support to all students and staff involved in this program. We wish them all the best as they begin their new adventures and for their end-of-year exams. Riley Fitzgerald heads to New Zealand Old Collegian, Riley Fitzgerald (pictured right), left in 2013 to pursue full-time training at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. He graduates from VCASS at the end of this year and has had multiple offers from various companies and elite training institutions for 2017. These include Sydney Dance Company’s Pre Professional program and Queensland Ballet Company’s Pre Professional program. Riley has decided he wishes to continue his training and has taken a position with the New Zealand School of Dance Contemporary Program. We look forward to following Riley and his journey into the professional dance world. Amendment to Royal South Street results I am pleased to report that Haylee Carr (Year 8) was awarded a HC for her classical ballet solo in the 12 years to under 14 age group section 350.5. This should have been included in the list of results from the last College Connections issue. Sarah Perkins wins Ballarat Arts Foundation grant and is accepted into Queensland Ballets Pre Professional Program Congratulations go to Old Collegian, Sarah Perkins (pictured right), who is one of this year’s recipients of the Ballarat Arts Foundation grants. These grants are awarded to emerging artists who show exceptional aptitude in their field. Drama Unit 3&4 Drama (pictured right) successfully completed their VCE exams. Music Feet Tour During the beginning of the last term break, Feet members embarked on a tour along the Victorian coastline. They performed on the Saturday evening in Ballarat before setting off to Lorne on Sunday morning. Feet performed in the competitors’ village at the end of the Amy Gillett fundraising bike ride, and were interviewed on local radio. They then travelled to Geelong, where they took in a jazz performance and stayed in Point Lonsdale and Ocean Grove at members’ houses. On Monday morning, they performed to some very excited middle schoolers at Geelong Grammar, met up with Michael Harrop, and then headed to Apollo Bay. Monday evening saw Feet members perform at the Apollo Bay RSL and stay at members’ houses in the area. On Tuesday morning, they performed to another group of excited students at Apollo Bay College. This tour is led by the students from the start of each performance to the end, including choosing the repertoire, setting up and running the sound equipment, liaising with organisers and choosing how to engage the audience. This tour is a great way to wind up the year before the Year 12s graduate.

Kool Skools Students spent a day in Melbourne over the last term break recording their original songs. The recordings are available on our new Sound Cloud account https://soundcloud.com/user-308122872. All of these students who produced their original work (Tallulah Jakins, Year 7; Jasmine Green, Year 9; Olivia Shalders, Year 10; and Kate Lyons and Declan Postlethwaite, Year 11) were able to lay down their tracks with the help of other College students, Lyndon Kriss and professionals from Studio 52, in order to produce a CD. Olivia Shalders (Year 10) has been selected to perform her song at the Kool Skools Awards Night in December. The students were able to have their original work recorded in a professional studio due to the full sponsorship by Michael Koopman from DDS. VCE Music Performance exams By the time of this writing, most of the class has performed in their final external performance exam in various locations in Ballarat and Melbourne. They have been required to perform a range of styles, elements and techniques for 25 minutes. These students have had expert feedback from specialists on their instruments, including saxophone, guitar, piano and voice. Thank you to those students and teachers accompanying and instructing these students for these exams. Farewell graduating class of 2016 Each year, we farewell those who have been involved in the PAC over the years as they graduate Year 12. Thank you to everyone, including the PAC leaders, Oriel Forsyth, Chelsea Byrne and Louis Edwards, the many hardworking ensemble leaders, and Year 12 members of many ensembles and productions. Some will be continuing their formal studies in the performing arts area and many will be still involved in other performing arts activities. We will miss their particular talents and passions here in the PAC.

LOTE Year 10 Japanese Speech Contest Winner – Aftyn Whitfield At the end of Term 2, three Year 10 students from BCC attended a speech competition against four other schools in Ballarat. The competition occurs every year and is about the sister city relationship between Inagawa and Ballarat. We had to learn a short set passage each and also create our own speech that lasted for about a minute. The speech was about what we know about the city of Inagawa in Japan and why we would like to go there as the 1st and 2nd prize was a trip to Inagawa for two weeks. In our preparation, we spent a lot of time researching Inagawa and perfecting our speaking skills for the competition. At the competition, we watched the other Year 10 students from the other schools give their speech and also gave ours. A panel of judges scored our speaking skills and ranked us accordingly. The top 6 ranked students, which included myself, moved onto the second stage of the competition. This was to have a short interview about why we thought we would be an eligible candidate as an ambassador in Inagawa. This consisted of questions as to what we would do as an ambassador and any qualities that we thought would be beneficial for the role. After each of us participated in an interview, the winners were announced to all at the competition. Prizes were given out for places 6th to 3rd and then the two winners, who were going to Japan, were announced. A student from Loreto and me were declared the winners. I never thought I would have this opportunity and I encourage anyone who is given the chance to attend this competition in Year 10 to do so. I have found it has really strengthened my confidence in speaking a second language in front of others which has, in turn, helped me with my speaking tests. If you are not sure about continuing with Japanese, then I highly recommend it as it gives you a different experience that other subjects won’t give you. Aftyn Whitfield Winner of the Year 10 Japanese Speech Contest Aftyn Whitfield (Year 10 Boarder) became the number one Japanese speaker in the City of Ballarat. She received a $4,000, 2-week trip to Japan as the prize. I am very proud of our hard-working students. Masako Kennedy Head of Japanese (Year 5-12)

LOTE Week LOTE week was a fantastic success. Students had a wonderful time taking part in the traditional games of Octoberfest such as speed pretzel eating and can shooting as well as the cultural Japanese activities of calligraphy and origami making. In addition to cultural games and activities, students ate traditional cuisine. Potato salad and Japanese pancakes were just some of the items that made up the daily menu at Café College last week. We ended the week with a soccer game in which both countries were brilliantly represented by students from the Middle School, 9/10 and Senior School.

The Parents & Friends take great pride in being able to provide this special book to each Year 12 student. We wish all of them the very best with their exams and their futures beyond the life of Clarendon. Archibald Prize exhibition Tuesday last week a group of about 40 people met in Kittelty’s cafe at the Art Gallery for a glass of champagne and a chat, then went on to see the Archibald Prize exhibition. Being able to see such interesting art work in a small group, private viewing was a real treat. Thank you to Kizanne Davies who organised this special evening for us. Second hand book sale Now our attention turns to the Second Hand Book Sale which will get going later in November. The times are below.
