senior school

After a wonderfully moving ANZAC Day service held at school on Friday 24 April and with significant

involvement in community events from both staff and students, we feel very comfortable that we paid the necessary respect for the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. Alyssa Brittnell, Year 12, was one of the 70 odd students chosen to represent Victorian students in Gallipoli. This was such a significant achievement to be selected. Alyssa arrived back in Australia on Tuesday and went straight to the BAS Athletics at Llanberris to represent the school.

In the next edition of College Connections there will be an article written by Alyssa about her trip. The Health and Wellbeing team held a wonderful session on Friday 1 May with our Senior School via facilitator, Sue Anderson. Sue is the author of the book “Unbullyable” and spoke to the students about her experiences as a young person growing up, also on mindfulness and how students can be empowered to the take control of situations and their own perception of the world.

Our senior students are now in the challenging phase of the VCE (and the weather is going to get much worse!). They were reminded that they have the power to develop habits that enable them to take control of their lives. On Friday 1 May the annual PNG concert was held with success and enthusiasm. Furthermore the Senior

School Musical camp for “The Wedding Singer” was also held over the most recent weekend. There is lots going on as always! In the next 2 weeks the following will be held:

Regan Consulting – drop-in sessions Thursday 7 May Art Camp – Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May

Mother’s Day Classic – Lake Wendouree, Sunday 10 May GBH Mother and Daughter weekend, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May

Senior School Musical “The Wedding Singer”, 21-23 May. Don’t forget to book your tickets via trybooking.com

It has been a week since our first group of King Island students farewelled their family and friends in Wanliss Road. All faces were moist, from either the rain or tears, yet there was a real feeling of excitement and adventure. Importantly, all arrived safely and Luke has reported that the first week has been really positive, with our students beginning to face the various challenges that life at the Grassy Campus affords. We will provide regular updates in College Connections as to how our students are going

on the Island to help add context to the regular Sunday night contact that parents will have. The 9/10 House Competition has stormed out of the gates in Term 2, with two events already completed. Last week, in quite chilly conditions, the students competed in the House Biathlon where they were asked to either run or swim for their House. It was pleasing to see almost all students involved and congratulations to all those students who moved out of their comfort level and committed to something that they do not usually do. Last week, we also held the House Chess Competition. In contrast to the

Biathlon, this was held in the comfort of the Pavilion and involved only a few representatives from each

House. It was, however, just as keenly competed and it was terrific to see fellow House members give up their lunchtime to support their peers. Results for both events will be announced at our next assembly. As you may well be aware NAPLAN testing occurs for our Year 9 students on the 12-14 May. NAPLAN is

important because it is the only common test that allows all students in Australia to see how they are developing in certain academic subjects, in relation to the rest of the students their age. It is important for our school because it provides us with a relatively objective measure of each student’s current level in a number of areas, and we can then use this information to guide and readjust our instruction. For these reasons it is essential for all of our students to sit the NAPLAN test. It is also important for all of our students to do their best, so that the testing is a reflection of their current understanding in subject fields

and not a reflection of their motivation on the day. This testing should not be a time of great anxiety or stress for your child so please help us put it in perspective. It is important and they need to try their

best, but only so that we can help them move even further forward in their learning. Jen Bourke & David Struth Co-Heads of 9/10

middle school Next week sees the implementation of the National Assessment program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Like over 1 million other students across Australia, our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be

involved in assessments of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. At College, we find the NAPLAN program a useful measure in helping to determine how our students are tracking towards important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The information we receive can be organised at an individual level, by class, year level, gender and so on. This allows us to check the impact of our programs, but more specifically, the effectiveness of our instruction. We use the

information to try and capture best practice as well as refine strategies and methods that are less effective. We also use the results to help identify students who require greater challenges or additional support. That said, NAPLAN is just one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and does

not replace the ongoing formative and summative assessments made by teachers in order to provide ongoing feedback and intervention. In terms of preparation, NAPLAN assesses what are already critical elements of the College literacy and

numeracy curriculum. Whilst we ensure students are familiar with the test format, the lead-in to NAPLAN follows the agreed sequence of skills and knowledge embedded in the curriculum. Given this, the advice we offer to our students is to reassure them that the NAPLAN assessments are just one part of their school program, and, like all things at College, we encourage them to do their best. We reassure them that NAPLAN is not a ‘pass or fail’ test. Instead, individual performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test.

Head of Sport District Cross Country 2015 at Victoria Park, Ballarat.

There were 16 students representing College in year 5 and 6 across two different age groups at this

event. Training had been done independently, and all competitors were eager to let loose on the Victoria Park track. The first group to tackle the challenge of 3km was the 11 and under boys team. The group was comprised of Ty Palmer, Nelson Troon, Flynn Brouwer and Xavier Hoffman. In what seemed to be a trend developing throughout the day, the start of the race seemed to be a sprint off for lead position.

Thankfully the pace steadied allowing College runners to find a comfortable pace and enjoy the challenge.

Ty Palmer cruised around the track before a strong trademark finish landed him 8th position overall, Nelson Troon and Flynn Brouwer ran a good steady race to finish in 20th and 25th place respectfully, a

fine achievement and despite a knee injury Xavier Hoffman battled along in true college spirit until he no longer could. A good show of determination. Well done to all boys. The 11 and under girls were next and did not disappoint providing what was potentially the highlight of the carnival. The 3km track seemed like a breeze for the girls. The pace was red hot from start to finish

and it was a dominant College performance. Abigail Webster took out 1st, she may have surprised herself! Matilda Pearce was hot on her tail to take out 2nd, Juliette Parlange 3rd. and not far behind was Annie Cowan in 10th position. This was a tremendous result, but even more impressive then the result itself was the great sportsmanship shown by all the girls at the completion of the race congratulating everyone and celebrating the race, rather than the result, this was great to see! Well done to all girls who will battle it out again at the regional championships.

The 13 and under boys had arrived and were ready to test themselves against some very strong competition. Again it was a red hot start to the race, all pacing techniques were out the window and the

spread of competitors from first to last got bigger and bigger. To their credit this didn’t seem to faze the boys. Edwin Lennox was first across the line for College finishing in 22nd place. Tom Jenkins and James Caligari worked well together to finish in 27th and 28th position and Ben Grima who was a late call up, but was ready to go never the less finished in 33rd position. Unfortunately the boys didn’t make it

through to regionals, but should still be proud of the result. There was one final race to be ran. The 13 and under girl. The girls had waited anxiously all day for the 3km race! By the time the race began, all nerves had been shaken off and it was go time. All four girls performed well finishing in the top 20. Olivia Moneghetti squeezed into 10th position, Ruby De Ruiter claimed 12th, Alyssa Trethowan was a brave 18th and Sarah Dalgleish right behind her in 19th. Not bad considering the girls were worried they wouldn’t make the journey!

The competition was great all day but our athletes did themselves proud. Overall College finished in 2nd position, only a few points behind the winner. This was a pleasing result with around 20 schools

competing on the day. We look forward to more success and PB’s on the 15 May at the Regional Cross Country to also be held at Victoria Park.

performing arts Dance Jenna Boschen (Grade 5) only began classical ballet 3 years ago, however her dedication and hard work

have rewarded her with some outstanding results. She successfully auditioned for the Australian Ballet School Interstate Training Program (ITP) in 2014. This program is only offered to the most talented of students Australia wide and gives young dancers the opportunity to train and experience life as a student of the Australian Ballet School whilst also training at their local ballet school. She was the winner of the Classical Scholarship at Bendigo Competitions Society in June 2014 and Runner Up in the prestigious Victorian Ballet Teachers Workshop Finals in August 2014. Jenna was

offered a place in the Australian Ballet School Elite After School Program (ASP), which she commenced this year, where see travels to Melbourne to train with the staff at the Australian Ballet School multiple times a week. This means she has been identified as one of the most talented dancers in her age group

in the country and has been selected by the Australian Ballet School as a student with enormous potential for a career in Classical Ballet. Excitingly, Jenna recently successfully auditioned for the Royal Ballet Schools International Summer Intensive which will see her travel to London in July this year to participate. We look forward to hearing more about this exciting trip!

festival caters for all Victorians and Dance enthusiasts including welcomed participants from all over the country and abroad. This contemporary piece received high praise from all attendees on the night. Both girls were thrilled to be able to perform alongside other professional companies as part of this showcase. Victorian Cecchetti Medals

On Sunday 26 April, over 120 students from throughout Victoria participated in the elimination rounds of the Victorian Cecchetti Medals Awards, held at the Ministry of Dance in Melbourne. These elimination

rounds involved the participants completing a ballet class under instruction, with contestants being eliminated throughout the day. Old Collegian Miss Brooke Lockett of The Australian Ballet was the adjudicator on the elimination day. I am pleased to announce that Lily Minchenko (past student of BCC now at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School) was selected as a Bronze level finalist and Sophie Grima (Year 9), Ada Sayasane (Year 9), Pippa Sutherland (Year 8) and past student Coco Wood (also at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School), were selected as Silver Medal finalists. The finals of these awards, in which the girls will have to present two set dances, will be held in early June.

Our best wishes goes to all of the girls as they prepare for these Awards. Drama The Wedding Singer – The musical will be performed over 3 nights, 21–23 May at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2pm. With a cast of 50 students and an orchestra of 20 this is a major production. A

musical comedy set in the 80’s with big costumes, great numbers, and some outstanding acting.

Bookings can be made through trybooking.com.au. Year 11 and 12 ensemble pieces will be presented in the drama studio on the Wednesday 3 June starting at 6pm. This is the culmination of months of work to create an original 20 minute piece in their groups of 3, 4, and 5. These performances go towards the student’s final grade. High School Musical – Middle School students can now sign up for auditions at the PAC. This show will

be performed at the Wendouree performing arts centre and will be directed by Ms Bashford-Leger. Miss Saigon – BLOC theatres production is a must see. This is a fantastic musical and will be starting two of our junior students. Mr Yau’s twin daughters will perform alternate nights throughout the run of the show.

PNG concert What a great success the concert was for the PNG Project! Thanks to all of the student performers and

their teachers who have prepared these contemporary bands, choir and soloists. A couple of bands had their world premiere performance! Congratulations to the Year 3/4 contemporary band, Stixen Stones, Speak No Evil, JS Choir, Liam Axiak, Fern Bird, Lachie Mansell, Phoebe Ricciardi, Sarah Wynen, Unit 3 Music Performance Groups and FEET for their great performances. Local band Black Cat was also honoured to support such a worthy cause.

both national heroes from this historic event. Brazenor was educated at Pleasant St Primary and Elliott at BCC; to bring together the two schools literally in one voice at the Dawn Service was a poignant tribute. The student’s dedication and enthusiasm was not dampened by the pre-dawn rain and cold at 5.30am –

it was a memorable event to be involved in. Click here for photo

JSPG Cookbook launch The Senior Chamber ensemble members provided background music for the JSPG cookbook launch last weekend in Watson Hall. The event as a whole was a success, and was a great opportunity for this ensemble to practise this style of performance. Performances The Barry Currie Stage Band was invited to perform at the Organ Society concert at Her Majesty’s theatre

recently. Tom Hallett (Year 11) is performing in the pit orchestra for BLOC Theatre’s season of Miss Saigon this

month. Tom Gibney (Year 12) performed the Last Post and Rouse again on the top of the clock tower as part of

our Sturt St ANZAC Day commemorations. Visiting Alumni – Nick McRoberts Nick (PA leader in 1994) visited from Paris, where he currently lives. In the last 20 years he has worked as a conductor and composer in Europe, working with many world renowned ensembles. The ELC was treated to a concert from Nick, who explained a potted history of composing, playing some classical favourites, and culminating in the ELC students joining in with Mozart’s variations on “Twinkle Twinkle

Little Star”. The students were spellbound and thoroughly enjoyed playing along. Nick then worked with Noah Heys (Year 12) on his VCE Music Styles and Composition schoolwork. Click here for photo
