ATAR- Australian Tertiary

Admission Rank

• The ATAR is the standard measure of overall school achievement used in all other Australian states and territories.

• The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0 (ATARs less than 30.00 will be expressed as “30 and below”).

Subject ScalingScaling is necessary so that student results in

different subjects can be compared fairly.

If a student of a given ability studies a less challenging Maths subject they might get a 90 / 100.

But if the same student studied a more challenging Maths subject they might only get a 80 / 100.

However, if scaling works, they should end up with the same scaled score.

QCAA Subject Duplication rules

• The QCAA considers Applied subjects and VET qualifications at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 2 that have similar subject matter and learning goals to be duplication of learning. Therefore students cannot select both the Applied and Certificate course of similar subject matter:

• Certificate II in Visual Arts and Applied Visual Arts in Practice

• Certificate II Sport and Recreation/Cert III Fitness and Applied Sport and Recreation

How will VET be included in the ATAR?

Each VET qualification level will have a single scaled score

that can be included in the student’s ATAR

E.g. Cert III in Hospitality and Cert III in Lab Skills will have the

same scaled score, regardless of duration or content

A scaled score for a VET Diploma will be higher than a Certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than a Certificate III

HOW TO CHOOSE A

PATHWAY

• ATAR/University Pathway– You are prepared to put in maximum

effort with regard to your studies over the next two years.

– You have demonstrated that you are academically driven (A’s and B’s).

– You are resilient and possess the strategies to cope with the high demands of academic subjects.

– You want to go to university straight after school (or you’re pretty sure you will).

Page 18: Senior Phase of Education - brayparkshs.eq.edu.au · ed Essential English Essential Maths Science in Practice Social and Community Studies Tourism Sport & Recreation Fashion Drama

university straight after school or perhaps ever.

– You struggle to put in the effort needed for academic subjects.

– You find academic stress difficult to manage.
