through the Bible was not to just get through it, rather the goal was for God to get through us. Mount Olivet was blessed to have him as our senior pastor. Although the time was all too brief, he had a lasting impact on the life of our congregation.

Pastor Hogenson would want me to thank all of you who traveled this journey with him and encouraged him with your cards, notes, and words on CaringBridge and Facebook. The congregation meant much to him. So now, let us say with one voice, “Thank you Pastor Hogenson, thank you for everything.” We all will miss him dearly, but we will all face the New Year with courage and hope because of the strong witness Pastor Hogenson gave us to the power of faith. Our prayers for Ruth and family continue. Peace to his memory. – INTERIM SENIOR PASTOR dENNIS JOHNSON

a Valentine In my letter last month, I gave a “shout out” to our pastors. This month of February, I want to send a Valentine to our great lay staff. Through several transitions and uncertainty, they have moved forward with commitment to doing their jobs with care and professionalism. I love working with them and I perceive that the congregation understands and appreciates the great work they do. Yes, they, too, are “lovers” of the flock and caregivers. I also send valentines of thanks to our tremendous volunteers – those unsung heroes of every congregation who give of themselves to build up the church. So, February is a month of expressing our gratitude to the disciples of Jesus and the great reminder that we love “because he first loved us.” “We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.”

Oh, yes, all we need is love, but a little chocolate, now and then, helps. Remember that on Fat Tuesday!

Yes, Fat Tuesday also falls in this month which means Ash Wednesday is March 1. This year’s Lenten theme is “Delighting in

goD’S WaYS.” The five Wednesdays will focus on helping us to see the Ten Commandments as a means of grace. Through the cross the commandments become our aid and, therefore, our friend. This will be elaborated on in the March Messenger.

February is the time we typically prepare for SUMMer! Yes, promotions are underway for summer camps, events, and programs. Cathedral of the Pines Camp Rally is February 12. See more information about our summer programs on pages 10-11.

Looking in the rear view mirror: what a great event we had with FeeD MY StarVing ChilDren. 500+ volunteers packed 95,000 packets of food to be shipped to Jamaica where we have an ongoing ministry (Mission Jamaica). It was a great intergenerational event. We were delighted that our grandchildren joined us in this fun-filled event to help others. This was part of our year-long emphasis on “95 Acts of Service.” Thank you volunteers!

February also brings our Senior PaStor-eleCt DaViD loSe to the Minneapolis Campus pulpit on February 26, the day of our annUal Meeting. We will gather at 1pm in the main sanctuary at Minneapolis to elect members to the congregational council, adopt a budget, and hear reports from our pastors.

two are Better than oneTwo are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken. ECCLESIASTES 4:9-12

How is it that God has created us to live in community together? A woman came to my office the other day and had great concern written all over her face. She was struggling with the question of how to get along with people. I thought to myself, “Is that all you are having a tough time with?” as I gently giggled inside, while also feeling great compassion for her as I, too, often consider this very same question.

God created us to live in community as the book of Ecclesiastes reminds us, “Two are better than one,” all the while no two are the same nor are we meant to be created as clones. God created all people uniquely special. I invite you to consider participating in a new thing at Mount Olivet this season. If you have never been to book club, a Wednesday morning Bible Study, the Oasis, or perhaps you haven’t received Holy Communion in a long time. I invite each of us to explore community in a new way by meeting new people as a means to strengthen the not easily broken threefold cord that we know as Mount Olivet. Thy will be done.

You are Loved It’s always been about love. We are loved.

It’s not based on our performance as human beings. It’s not about what we need to do, but about what Christ has already done. God loved first … loved us, even before we were born (Psalm 139.13).

We live in a busy world full of many distractions; it’s easy for us to forget that we are loved by God and at times it’s hard to believe. Paul Tillich wonderfully defines faith as the courage to accept the fact that we are accepted, the courage to love the fact that we are actually loved.

Years ago someone suggested I slow down and take a daily personal inventory, not so much focusing on what I did wrong but reflecting on the moments in the day when I was aware of the presence of Christ’s Love. Maybe it’s hearing a humbling hymn or listening to a sermon or receiving the tangible means of grace during Holy Communion or when the kids at camp are praying or hearing and believing for the first time you are precious in God’s sight.

We get so distracted and forgetful. Purposefully slowing down to remember that you are indeed loved by God is a gift you can give yourself. Lent is coming, usually a time of introspection. I encourage you to give yourself the gift of time for reflection and silence at our Oasis on Tuesdays 7am-7pm in the Minneapolis Campus Youngdahl Chapel and Thursdays 9am-3pm in the West Campus Sanctuary. Or treat yourself to the health and wellness event, Preserving God’s Temple: Body, Mind, Spirit, on Saturday, February 11 (details on page 7).

Watch Your Mail for Special gifts! With Ash Wednesday right around the corner (March 1), we soon will be immersed in the very rich faith journey that is the season of Lent. To aid in that journey, Mount Olivet member households soon will be mailed a very special devotional and Small Catechism, both of which were produced and distributed through generous donations to our Reformation 500 programming. The devotional, 40-Day Journey with Martin Luther, not only will add deep meaning to the season, but at the same time will help you learn more about Luther’s understanding of scripture, God, and the incredible, life-changing gift of grace we have in Christ Jesus. The Small Catechism, will be of great value during the Lenten season when mid-week services will focus on Luther’s explanation of the Ten Commandments! Our hope and prayer is that both will be books you return to again and again for inspiration and insight as you continue to learn about and live your faith.

CoP traditionsWith the construction of the new rumpus room at Cathedral of the Pines Camp, many people wonder how different camp must be now compared to their own days spent on the shores of Caribou Lake. Well here’s the truth ... yes, many of the buildings have been updated and some even reside in a different location, but the atmosphere and traditions of COP remain unchanged. Summer after summer COP enhances the lives of campers and volunteers alike. It fosters meaningful relationships and allows people to find and develop their faith. Whether you make it up to camp every summer or haven’t been in many years, know that you are always welcome to the place you know and love. pHOTOS: 1 There is time each day to swim in beautiful Lake Caribou (Cathedral of the pines 1955). 2 Theme meals throughout the week make time in the lodge exciting and fun (Cathedral of the pines 50’s Dinner 1983). 3 Campers get to choose an activity they want to participate in at 11 o’clock activity (Cathedral of the pines Crafts 1996). 4 Everyone looks forward to the hootenanny where we all sing classic campfire songs around the fire (Cathedral of the pines 1995). 5 Don’t forget the boat rides (Cathedral of the pines 2015)!
