Music and Memory UpdateSilver Lake College, the ADRC of the Lakeshore and Felician Village are partnering to offer an exciting opportunity for our residents by enhancing our Music & Memory program. At the beginning of August, Felician Village welcomed a student intern, Emily Laurin, to work with the Music & Memory program and further develop our Snoezelen Sensory Room for our residents with dementia. Emily is a senior at Silver Lake and is majoring in music. Music & Memory is designed to provide pleasure to persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia by finding a renewed connection in their lives with music. She will spend time in the Snoezelen Sensory Room with our residents getting to know what type of music they enjoy and then then develop personalized music lists on an iPod just for them. Sr. Lorna Zemke will be overseeing the internship process for Silver Lake College, Tim Lindloff, Joanne Bartz and Connie Thimmig will be developing this partnership for Felician Village. We anticipate this internship will open the door into future partnerships with Silver Lake’s music and art department as well as the national Alive Inside Foundation.

We celebrate two beautiful anniversaries at Felician Village this month! The first is on August 15, when Catholics throughout the world will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption; that great day dedicated to honoring Mary the Virgin Mother of God, who at the end of her earthly journey was

reunited with her Son Jesus in glory. Since the days of their Foundress Blessed Angela, the Felician Sisters have always sought to imitate that loving devotion and Christian discipleship of the Virgin Mary, and for this reason every Felician Sister includes some form of Mary’s name in her own name. It is also for this

reason that the Felician Sisters dedicated their first North American ministry to the Mother of God: Saint Mary’s Home for the Aged, founded on August 27, 1887 - which would eventually grow to become part of our 22-acre campus of Felician Village. So, as our long-term care unit turns 129 years old this month, we borrow the words of Blessed Angela in asking the prayers of Jesus’ Mother, now united with him in heaven: “O Mary, our Mother! Remember that we are yours; guard and protect us as your only possession!”

Congratulations! For the SEVENTH straight year, Felician Village has been named the “Best of the Lakeshore” for The Gardens (senior independent living), The Court and The Villa (assisted living) and St. Mary’s Home (nursing home). Next Step Rehab was named a finalist in the rehabilitation category for the third year in a row. These awards are a well-deserved recognition from the public demonstrating they are aware of the high quality of life that is provided for their families, friends and neighbors.

Thank you for choosing to live at Felician Village. It is because of you that our employees have the opportunity to demonstrate the Felician values of care, compassion and dedication to our residents. Since 1887 when the first Felician Sisters founded St. Mary’s Home for the Aged and honored the sacredness and dignity of all persons at every stage of life, our employees have helped to position Felician Village as the best facility in Manitowoc County. On behalf of the board of directors and administration, I express our heartfelt appreciation to our residents, families, and staff for choosing to live and work at Felician Village and be part of this wonderful ministry.

100 years young!Clara Jurgens, resident of The Court at Felician Village, celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday, August 5, 2016.

When asked her secret to living a long life Clara said, “Don’t smoke, drink min-imal alcohol, eat simple and work hard.” Besides the longevity of her life, she is also grateful to have a great mind.

Clara is one of nine children with only one remaining sibling, an 89 year-old sister. She grew up on a farm where each

member of the family was expected to contribute, including the girls. She recalls living off their land by maintaining a large garden and her mother making a huge bowl of dough each week to bake bread, kolaches and cinnamon rolls.

Clara and her husband have seven children. In addition to a celebration with some of her children, residents and staff at The Court the day of her birthday, she was the guest of hon-or at a birthday party on Saturday, August 6, for additional relatives and friends.

She has lived at The Court at Felician Village since May 2014.
