Veterans returning from combat deployment mayfind returning home as tough, if not tougher than thebattlefield they left behind, according to a local traumaexpert. When high stress leads to run-ins with the law,the result can be a total loss of military benefits andhonor for even minor convictions.

Add some alcohol for self medication, toss in aloud argument with the spouse, and youve got an easyconviction for domestic violence on your hands.

Thats about to change in January when Brevardopens its first veterans court, which, for certain offensesfor those returning from deployment, provides treat-ment and alternatives to jail.

The best solution is to get our veterans connectedback into the community in positive ways, said Bre-vard County Judge John C. Murphy, himself a veteranof numerous reserve deployments.

Happy Anniversary to Senior Life! This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just

like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our poten-tial, despite how much weve grown and how much weve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldnthave done it without your support and encouragement.

Youve probably noticed we have some new names in our familyof writers and photographers, but we still have many of the namesyouve come to recognize and trust. Lucy Kline has been a favoritecolumnist with Senior Life for many years and Mary Brotherton hasbeen writing features almost as long. Martha Masiello has also beenwith us several years.

More importantly are you, our readers. Some of you have beenreading Senior Life since the very first issue, 11 years ago. Sincethat time, youve seen how the paper has developed and grown.Youve watched us sponsor wonderful events and stand firm in ourcommitment to the community. Each month you have shown supportof the paper and helped guide us with your comments and sugges-tions. More importantly, almost every day, someone calls or emailsus to let us know how much Senior Life means to them.

We like to know that we are providing a service that is not onlyhelpful, but one that you appreciate. Thats the best anniversary giftyou could ever give us.

    Have a magical May!Best regards, Jill Blue-Gaines

In 1987, Farmer helped launch Space Coast Early Interven-tion Center for children with and without disabilities becausethere were no such facilities for her son, Luke, who has Downsyndrome. Now the parent of an adult, Farmer migrated to meetthe current needs of her son: a place to work, live, and otherwiseenjoy a full life into the future that will one day not include her.

This is just going to be such an awesome place. Everyoneis going to want to live there, Farmer said.

The group is seeking donations to assist with the projectsbuild out, which is estimated at $6 million.

November 2011FROM THEEditorHappy Thanksgiving! What are the holidays, if not opportunities

to pass on traditions and family rituals? Myhusbands family holds hands around thesteaming banquet on Thanksgiving while eachperson states at least one thing for which he orshe is grateful. This year, I think I will try tofind something different for which to givethanks. Certainly, I am thankful that I marriedinto a wonderful family and I am most appreciative of my good health. Iam delighted to live in a comfortable home and that I have the opportunityto work at a job I was called to do a job that I truly love but my listthis year may go something like this:

I have the honor to work with a talented team of writers, photographers, designers, marketers, sales people and distribution staff who work as ateam to put a high-quality product in the hands of some of the most amaz-ing people in our county and beyond. I am thankful that I have been ableto meet some of the terrific advertisers, some of the nicest people in thecounty. I am grateful that each month, I am allowed to write my personal note and sometimes, you call or email or stop by the office to acknowledge how my words touched you.

Thank you for allowing me into your lives again this month,As always,Mary Brotherton [email protected]

The sweet smell and the greenneedles may be the first thing thatnormally comes to mind whenthinking of a Christmas tree. But forCape Canaveral Hospital, its lights.

The hospital is once again launch-ing its annual appeal that enablesstaff and volunteers, and now mem-bers of the community, to donatemoney to a worthy cause and in return dedicate a light in their namesfor those dear to them. These lightswill form the outline of a Christmastree along the side of the hospitalbuilding.

I think its a wonderful idea, said Betty Hanson. I had no ideathere was more to the lights of thetree and now that I do and I plan todonate.

What began as a simple charityamongst hospital volunteers almost25 years ago, to help benefit thehospital and community, is now acountywide effort to offer a widerange of clinical and support serv-

ices to those in the surrounding areain need.

While the charity serves as an actof remembrance and celebration oflife, it has proved highly popularwith hundreds of donations eachyear. Volunteers hope it stays thatway. This years goal is the largestone yet, hoping to raise $25,000 topurchase cardiac defibrillators, which will be permanently installedin all of the hospitals operatingrooms.

It benefits the hospital, but italso benefits the people in the com-munity who might go to the hospital its twofold, said volunteer DickBarnes. Its a requirement and regulation to have the defibrillatorsnow and we plan to purchase themwith the donations we receive. Butbest of all it ties ones donation di-rectly from someone to somebodythey love and its partially fundedbecause of them.

Not all cureswill cure what ailsyou. This observation comesfrom an un-planned, unscien-tific discovery ofrecent occurrence.A friend dranksome herbal tea which he believed would help sooth his sorethroat. After sipping his fourth cup of teaand making his sixth trip to the mensroom, he decided to read the packaging, only to find the herbal remedy was tocure constipation. Mistakes like this canreally be, how shall I say this? Irritating.

Now, we all know people who willexpertly recommend stuff to help uscure what ails us. However, I wouldstrongly advise research before believ-ing your golfing friends who overnightacquired the medical expertise of a Harvard or Yale physician just becausethe stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. When messing around with herbalcures, make sure you know what youredoing. For example, a lawyer who lovesthe taste of basil may brew and drink a

pot of basil tea to relax. Oh yeah, itllrelax, all right. Theyll wake up within acouple of days of the end of the trial.Basil tea is a sedative recommended tocure sleeping disorders! Good morning, counselor. You may want to have a cupof coffee while youre looking for anew firm. Sage or barley teas mighthave a delightful flavor to them, but ifyoure generally an energetic personand you have a few cups of those youmay find yourself talking like thatspeed-talking guy on steroids from theold Fed Ex commercials. After theypeel you off the ceiling you can look atthe packaging and youll find sage andbarley are recommended to cure depres-sion. Finally, and Im going to be care-ful with this one, if youre still an activeadult I strongly recommend you moderate if you drink Kava Kava tea. Why? Lets just say if you drink a lot ofthat tea, dont visit the neighbors unlessthey are really close friends with no inhibitions.

So if someone ever tries to set youup on a blind date with a tea toddlerdont assume its going to be boring. You might be in for the experience ofyour life.

As one generation succeeds another, parentsrelive the time of the begin-nings of their own familiesin the life of a new born. The role of the grandparentcan be intimate and day-to-day or distant but special.

With a highly mobile society, children leave thenest and move to new loca-tions. Families are scattered across theglobe. The joyful process of bonding canhappen whether close by or far away.People who enjoy a long life find ways toconnect and to be part of the life ofgrandchildren.

At first, the grandparent looks at thechallenges to include geographic dis-tance, religious and social differences,job/work schedules, economic and socialstatus divides, family conflicts and differences in rearing children.

Often grandparent love is providedas a regular caregiver in the same cityin support and relief of the new family. There is the far-away grandparent sharing special visits and events. Theinvolvement in either case includesemotional, spiritual, mental and occasionally financial support.

Grandparenting includes the extensionof your legacy. Sharing your stories, wis-dom, knowledge and being a companionat special events and milestones.

Using a grandparents calendarhelps to bridge the time gaps. Markingthe calendar with birthdates and special events, sending cards and gifts, making telephone calls, using the webvideo camera feature on your personal

computer, sharingphotographs andplanning the peri-odic visits helps fillthe time with memories.

Budget challengescan be overcome bymaking adjustmentsin family finances.By setting aside $10

each week, an airline ticket can be avail-able twice each year. If the trip involvesauto transportation, set aside fundsweekly for gas and travel. Check withother grandparents who may have grand-children in areas near your own. Shareauto travel expenses. Look for bargain airflights during quiet non-holiday periods.Network with people at your church, community center and workplace to gettheir input. Share your challenge and addto the solutions. They may have un-usedfrequent flier miles, coupons and other
