Hewitt’s Senior High Philosophy

EVERYONE IS UNIQUEStudents are different in how they learn, what they enjoy, and in theireducational goals. One of the great advantages of home schooling is thetremendous opportunity to fit the educational program to each child.

FLEXIBILITY IS KEYAlthough we recommend specific texts, we work with you whenever other textsare desired. We also allow the creation of courses we do not currently offer (e.g.,logic, SAT Prep, zoology).

PEOPLE LEARN BEST THROUGH ACTIVITYWe emphasize active participation on the students’ parts in the learning process.For example, our history courses include many projects to allow students tolearn and show what they've learned, through reading, writing, researching,drawing, building, acting, and even singing, rather than simply taking tests.

EDUCATION IS NOT ALL IN BOOKSTherefore, we offer credit for work and volunteer experience, as well as educational travel. These experiences helpdevelop such traits as discipline, compassion, and integrity. We've had students receive credit for such diverseactivities as mission endeavors, running a business, training horses, acting as a museum guide, and traveling.

CRITICAL THINKING IS VITALStudents need to learn how to think, to differentiate between factand opinion, and to do research. Our approach emphasizesresearch, primary sources, and opinion essays.

INDEPENDENCE SHOULD BE FOSTEREDWe want to become acquainted with our enrollees. Weencourage our students to take charge of their education and tocontact us with questions or problems (of course, parents cando the same).

WHAT YOU GETWe provide structure, guidance, grades, credits, transcripts, and diplomas. Counseling is also available by letter,phone, fax, or e-mail. Letter grades are given each quarter, but they are a small part of the evaluations. Inaddition, your student's work will receive personal attention, often with specific suggestions for improvement. Ourevaluators strive to be supportive, realistic, and educational in their comments.

WHAT YOU DOSubmit the registration form on pages 27–28 and payment for either the full year or the first month. When wereceive the registration form, we will mail a student I.D. card, questionnaires to complete and return, and a HighSchool Handbook. Questionnaires are also available on line to expedite your enrollment. Someone will call ore-mail once the questionnaires are received to help you make course/text choices. You have 12 months tocomplete your academic year.

GRADUATIONUpon completion of all Hewitt requirements, a diploma is issued. To qualify for our diploma, students mustcomplete a minimum of 21 credits of study and score satisfactorily on an achievement test, college board exam, orGED. If you submit your state's graduation requirements, we can build a program to match them. Our diplomasand credits have been accepted by the armed forces, public and private high schools, community colleges, anduniversities.

TRANSFER STUDENTSOur high school is a four-year program. We welcome transfer students and will work with them to accept as manycourses as possible. We will also provisionally accept a parent’s transcript of a home-schooled student’s highschool credits.

ACCREDITATIONWe have chosen not to become accredited by the government or by an independent accrediting agency, becausewe do not want an accrediting body to dictate the courses, textbooks, and teachers that we must employ. Manystate and private colleges and universities are accepting students without an accredited diploma. You can ask for acopy of a list of approximately 75 colleges/univ. that have accepted Hewitt’s transcript/diploma.

Basic Track Our Basic track is meant for studentswho are not academically inclinedand/or are not interested in pursuingcollege. Remember, this is not a for-mal system, and you are in no waylocked in. This is simply an exampleof how a student not planning oncollege might meet our graduationrequirements.

College Preparatory This sample track is for students whointend on pursuing college, but whoare not ready for part or all of theHonors track.

Honors TrackThe sample Honors track is for stu-dents who have exceptional aca-demic skills in one or more areas. It isdesigned to provide a greater num-ber of credits, particularly in aca-demic areas, than our other tracks.

College PrerequisitesCollege-bound students should contact college admissions of-fices early during high school to request entrance requirementsso they can prepare to meet them. If a major has been chosen,electives should be selected from that specific subject area. Thesestudents should take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or theAmerican College Test (ACT) early in their junior or senior year.

are NOT included with syllabi.

Single-Course OptionPerhaps you feel comfortable grading all sub-jects but English or history. Or maybe youwant to test our program before investing in afull-time package. You can enroll in a singlecourse and get evaluations, phone help, andtranscript for any class. Our English programprobably gets the most compliments. We setout to challenge your student to constantlywork on and improve his or her ability to com-municate clearly. This applies not only togrammar, punctuation, sentence structure,etc., but also to the content itself. We expectthe student’s move from our high-school sen-ior English program to any college to be al-most unnoticeable. If you are looking for somehelp, but not for everything, we think you andyour student will appreciate the input.

The rule of thumb for grading is that if you have an answer key, you grade the work.

If you don’t, our teachers grade the work.

I really liked having something that gave me interesting literary topics to write about. I enjoy studying literature and I also loveShakespeare. Elizabeth Kamath has a B.A. in psychology and worked many years as a technicalwriter. She had over ten years experience grading home-school student English pa-pers before she began developing curriculum for Hewitt. She has written eight of thecurrent fifteen Lightning Lit guides. Elizabeth and her husband homeschool their twosons, Tobias Akira, now eight, and Simon Ilya, currently three, who manage to keepher busy (as well as being test-subjects for the new elementary Lightning Lit). She iscurrently working on the new Grade-2 Lightning Lit curriculum.

Lucy S. R. Austen is a freelance writer, editor, and homeschooling mother who loves sharingher enjoyment of reading, writing, and thinking. She was homeschooled from Kindergartenthrough sixth grade, and again in eleventh grade, before going on to earn a B.A. in Englishfrom the University of Washington. She has worked for Hewitt Homeschooling Resources asa high-school English evaluator, and as editor of Spring Hill Review, a journal of PacificNorthwest culture. Her textbooks, British Christian Authors and American Christian Authors,have been published by Hewitt as part of their Lightning Literature & Composition series.

Born in North Carolina, Michael Gaunt has had the pleasure of living in many differentparts of the U.S. and abroad. He met his wife, Alex, while they were in graduate school

studying medieval history at the University of York in England. Upon his return to theStates in 1998, he went to work as a teacher/counselor at Hewitt Homeschooling Re-

sources where he has been ever since. Years of experience working with homeschool-ing students and families have helped him to revamp many of Hewitt’s class offerings

to better meet the needs of the homeschooling community as well as to recognize thevariety of situations and the flexibility of approaches required to best serve each stu-dent. He also worked with Elizabeth Kamath in the development of the Lightning Lit

program. After his five-year-old twins, he is proudest of the high level of achievementof his students, both at Hewitt and in their lives after Hewitt.

Brenda S. Cox is an American who has spent most of her adult life living and working inthe Middle East. She homeschooled her four children, and several other students, through
