There occurs forest depletion in the

world due to the deterioration of natural

surroundings. It is necessary to conserve

natural forests for existence of living and

non-living things. Trees are to be grown for

making the world green and pleasant.

In Myanmar the government has been

launching forest and environment conserva-

tion activities. Beginning 1994, the nine-dis-

trict greening project was implemented in

some regions in central Myanmar, which

had faced the situation that may cause

desertification. Later, the project was ex-

tended up to 13 districts. The regions in

central Myanmar have now become green

and pleasant.

Green forests regulate climate condi-

tions and improve the environment in ac-

cord with the slogan “climate depends on

forests”. This is why the government is mak-

ing continuous arrangements for growing of

trees and conservation of the forests.

The Ministry of Forestry and local

organizations undertake environment con-

servation systematically for protection of

forest resources. It is the duty of all the entire

people to conserve the forests and trees.

Conservation of forests forlong-term use

TOKYO, 8 June—Japan’s government saysthe nation has to workharder to encourageelderly people to remainin the workforce.

They need to see themas a resource not a burden— invaluable manpowerinstead of people who justneed support and care.

In a White Paperpublished on Friday, thegovernment says thetransformation to anageing society is un-precedented.

In 50 years time, more

than two-fifths of thepopulation will be over 65,twice the current figure.

Issues such as pensionsand care for the elderlyare becoming moreimportant for politiciansas a result.

At the moment, thereare more than three peopleof working age to supporteach person over 65. In2055, that figure will havefallen significantly.

Roughly speaking, there will just be oneyounger person to supporteach pensioner.

The government plansspecific measures to try to

ease the hardship causedby such demographicchallenges.

These include pro-moting employmentamong the elderly andhelping people in their 50sto shape post-retirementlife plans. —Internet

In a new report, the ILO said an estimated 22 per centof the global workforce, or 614.2 million workers, arestill working over 48 hours a week.

“The good news is that progress has been made inregulating normal working hours in developing andtransition countries, but overall the findings of this studyare definitely worrying, especially the prevalence ofexcessively long hours,” said Jon C Messenger, a co-author of the study. 6 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Monday, 11 June, 2007

Another school year has started.I was always happy when schools reopened. I

loved my school days. It was a joy for me to attendclasses wearing a new uniform and slinging a bagwhen the earth was cool under the early monsoonshowers. Now the schools have reopened, and therecome students wearing white and green uniformstogether with the early monsoon showers.

Student youths are always clean and fresh likethe blossoming flowers in the early rainy season. They are moving forward with vigorous stepstowards the future, while enhancing their intellectualand physical abilities, health and fitness, moralconduct, and morale. But all my pleasures and joysof seeing those students were gone when I heardabout the disgusting news of a group of bad adultsunder the name of students. So evil and wickedthat they are too mean to be compared with today’sstudents. They are the so-called ‘88’ generationstudents the whole nation is regarding them as tooloathsome.

See, Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi and theirgroup of so-called ‘88’ generation students weresaid to have sent letters to President Hu Jintao ofthe People’s Republic of China and PresidentVladimir Putin of Russian Federation through therespective embassies in Yangon on 4 June 2007. Inthe letters, they reportedly said that they were soregretful for the veto used by both countries to rejectthe plan to put Myanmar on the agenda at the UNSecurity Council on 12 January 2007; that due tothe veto, ways of solving the Myanmar issue throughthe UN were lost; that the use of veto amounted toletting Myanmar military junta go against the worldcommunity; that violent responses and unjust arrestsagainst activists demanding democracy throughpeaceful means are increasing. They have made alot of exaggerations and lies. The letters alsodemanded China and Russia to join hands with theinternational community if they had the real wishto see prosperity and stability in Myanmar. So

To national traitors under the name of students

Ko Keshameful and disgusting that those so-called ‘88’generation students are like the persons trying toattack their own village and even their own army.

I also learned that they distributed a news releasedemanding China and Russia to render assistance inMyanmar’s transition to democracy to foreignembassies and diplomats. My anger reached to thedegree beyond tolerance, when I heard this. Theyare so thickheaded to the degree beyond imagination. They are dim-witted enough to understand nothing.Their intelligence is too low when compared withtheir age. Those old bat bogus students had disturbedmy mind that was calm and peaceful because of thestudents.

On 18 September 1988, the Tatmadaw had totake over all the duties of the State as the dangerof national disintegration loomed large then. Fromthat time on, the government has been givingpriority to the rule of law and regional peace andsecurity. It then laid down the four politicalobjectives and has been paying attention tostability of State, community peace andtranquillity and the rule of law. We all havewitnessed the government’s endeavours.

Stability of State, community peace andtranquillity and the rule of law are essential fornational development, ensuring security for publiclives and property and a peaceful workingenvironment and perpetuation of sovereignty.

In this regard, the government will have tostop, investigate, arrest and take actions againstall persons trying to ruin stability of State, community peace and tranquillity and the rule oflaw. It is only the normal duty of everygovernment of the world to ensure peace, stabilityand security for the public. The Tatmadawgovernment is just performing its task well. Ihonestly accept that it is the duty of everygovernment to take preventive measures to protectits citizens against all forms of terrorist acts.

In reality, Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi and

group have become well-known for their misdeedto muddle up student affairs and politics. But thereare little known facts behind the scene. So, I wouldlike to present about them a little. Those bogusstudents received financial assistance from certainembassies, with U Ye Tun as a contact person. They committed conspiracies together with MoeThee Zun raised by the BCP. They formed unlawfulassociations — All Burma Students Union (ABSU)and All Myanmar Students Union (AMSU), andfuelled the 1988 unrest through instigative acts.

When the Tatmadaw controlled the nationalsituation and took over the State duties on 18September 1988, ABSU founded and led by MinKo Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Moe Thee Zun laiddown three strategies — to launch semiunderground activities, to form a political party andcarry out activities, and to resort to the armedstruggle line — with the hope of continued opposingand attacking the State.

According to the strategy, they formed theABSDF terrorist insurgent group for undergroundactivities, and Moe Thee Zun-led Lubaung ThitDemocratic Party for aboveground activities. Sincethen, Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Aung Dinhave been trying to arouse public ire with theintention of creating another unrest. The group ledby Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi has its roots inthe perpetration to oppose the State and the people.

Authorities concerned took legal action againstMin Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi, Aung Din, Sit KoNaing and Soe Thein as they were giving anti-government and anti-Tatmadaw talks at sometownship NLD offices from 16 to 21 March 1989and attempting to incite unrest in the nation. TheMoe Thee Zun-led Lubaung Thit Democratic Partywas proclaimed unlawful on 6-12-1991 as italthough existing as a legally formed organizationpreviously was making contacts with insurgentgroups and cooperating with underground BCPs inaccord with their strategy.

Aung Din who plotted conspiracies togetherwith Min Ko Naing and others in the ABSU wasarrested for his offences. He was released fromprison on 7-7-1993. Now, he is serving as a directorof US Campaign for Burma formed with Myanmarexpatriates in US and is still opposing and attackingthe government. It is common knowledge that BoKyi, who worked together with Min Ko Naing andKo Ko Gyi as ABSU members in 1988-89 is activein Assistance Association for Political Prisoners(Burma)-AAPP.

The government also declared ABSDF unlawfulassociation on 28-8-2005 for threatening the ruleof law and the stability of the State. ABSDF andthose perpetrators are on the same band wagon.

(See page 7)

Stability of State, community peace and tranquillity and the ruleof law are essential for national development, ensuring security forpublic lives and property and a peaceful working environment andperpetuation of sovereignty.

In this regard, the government will have to stop, investigate, arrestand take actions against all persons trying to ruin stability of State, community peace and tranquillity and the rule of law. It is only thenormal duty of every government of the world to ensure peace, stability and security for the public. The Tatmadaw government isjust performing its task well. I honestly accept that it is the duty ofevery government to take preventive measures to protect its citizensagainst all forms of terrorist acts.

(from page 6)ABSU members including Moe Thee Zun,

Aung Din, Bo Kyi, Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi,Htay Kywe and Min Zeya made instigative acts tofan the 1988 unrest. A review of the events andfacts I have presented in this article have spotlightedthe conspiracies inside and outside the nation ofthose former ABSU members to put the entirenation in harms way while working as terrorists, expatriate opponents and semi-UG hard cores allacting hand in glove.

Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi were releasedfrom the prison in 2005. Then, they joined fellowex-convicts Htay Kywe, Pyone Cho and Min Zeyaand called themselves “88” generation studentgroup. They are now in their early forties, and donot deserve at all the prestige of students who arehonest and loyal to the nation and the people.Indeed, they are, like Maung Ba Than, just nationaltraitors working as servants of and havingthemselves exploited by external elements, andbetraying the motherland and the people. Almostall the adults have passed their schooldays and pinefor the student life. Min Ko Naing and party’snaming themselves students is aimed to exploit thestudents, while betraying the mother country. Anyparents of the students including me cannot ignoresuch an improper and self-centred act that is harmfulto the education of the students.

It has come to the knowledge of the peoplethat Min Ko Naing and party are taking part in theprogrammes of certain foreign broadcasting stationswith the intention of winning local and internationalattention and regaining contact with their oldpartners, visiting the embassies of some westerncountries, keeping in touch with anti-governmentunderground groups, and forming a students unionlike All Burma Students Union. We still rememberthat they sent a letter to the secretary general of theUnited Nations through the US embassy callingfor direct handling of Myanmar affairs by himselfand the UN Security Council.

Getting involved in political movements to theliking of their alien masters, Min Ko Naing andparty are leading an easy life with foreignassistance. Many news stories were unbearable tomy ears that Bo Kyi of AAPP was providing MinKo Naing and party with cash donations hecollected from Myanmar old students and NGOsin foreign countries, through the embassy of acertain country; that in the second week of April2006, he was said to have sent 25 million kyats tothem; that he would continue to provide cashassistance so that all members of the group wouldget a mobile phone each and the group would geta car; that Min Ko Naing and party were collectingcash donations to provide the so-called politicalprisoners in various jails in the nation; that on 14August 2006, an NGO in the US provided 30,000US dollars for Htay Kywe through the US embassy;and that Myanmar old students and NLD memberKhin Ohnmar in the US sent K 2.5 million to MinZeya.

Member Ne Tin Myint of the “88” generationstudent group illegally left for Maesok last month.

It is apparent to the entire people that the membersare too subservient to alien countries and organizationsinstead of crushing various attacks on the mothercountry to denigrate the image of their country dueto their dishonest purposes. Recent incidents alsoshowed that their traitorous way with too muchreliance on external elements is similar to that of NLDleaders, on which they rely much.

His illegal trip revealed his performance of a wolf inthe sheep’s clothing, as evidenced by the informationthat he would have to hold a meeting to discussfollow-up programmes of the “88” generation studentgroup with Moe Thee Zun, Aung Din and Bo Kyi inexile; and that he was making arrangements forestablishment of a liberation zone of the “88”generation student group in foreign countries and inborder areas.

It can be deduced from the above-mentionedfacts that the group of Min Ko Naing and Ko KoGyi are receiving cash assistance from theembassies of some western countries, and theyhave contact with expatriate Myanmar oldstudents and are doing activities in the countrywith the support of the latter. I want to warnthem that all Myanmar people equipped withpatriotic fervour including me will not remainindifferent from the attempts to seize power ofthe guys receiving the assistance of and dancingto the tune of foreign countries and directlycopying western democracy.

Now, the people have understood well the realintention of their movements such as signaturecampaign, white expression campaign, lettercampaign and white Sunday campaign. The groupmembers serving as slaves and supporting theactivities of certain foreign countries and constantlymaking attempts to obstruct the interests of themotherland and the people sent letters to China andthe Russian Federation. I do not think those stupidpersons noticed such a brazen act tarnished the imageof the nation and the people and declared them asnational traitors. The letter written to the liking oftheir foreign masters put them on record as nationaltraitors.

It is apparent to the entire people that themembers are too subservient to alien countriesand organizations instead of crushing variousattacks on the mother country to denigrate theimage of their country due to their dishonestpurposes. Recent incidents also showed that theirtraitorous way with too much reliance on externalelements is similar to that of NLD leaders, onwhich they rely much.

It is still in my mind that around 1988-89 NLDChairman U Tin Oo sent letters to the then USPresident, the US State Secretary, the Indian PrimeMinister, the Thai Foreign Minister, the JapaneseForeign Minister, the chairman of the JapaneseSocialist Party, the Amnesty International in the UK

and the International Human Rights associations inSwitzerland. In general, the letters said that theMyanmar junta brutally suppressed pro-democracyactivists; that so they would like the countries toreject the offers if Myanmar government proposedto export its products to them; and they would alsolike them to deter the plan for sending backMyanmar students in border areas into Myanmar. The traitorous acts indeed.

In like manner, Daw Suu Kyi, General Secretaryof the NLD, irresponsibly blemished the reputationof Myanmar and its people by sending letters to theLondon-based Amnesty International, the head ofthe UNDP in New York and ambassadors of foreignembassies in Yangon. They should have realizedthat their disgracing the nation and the people bysending letters in desperation to seize power ispushing the nation into an abyss of diversehardships. Ordinary people like me do not get suchan abysmal idea even incidentally, and I did notknow why they showed no consideration in thatregard.

Whatever it may be, NLD, Daw Suu Kyi and UTin Oo did betray the nation and the people bydishonouring the nation on account of theirdesperation to come to power. The “88” newgeneration student group has also betrayed thenational cause by sending letters. Those who havebetrayed the nation and the people will have to facethe punishment meted out by the nation and thepeople and action will be taken according to thelaw.

I would also like to warn that it is high timeso-called students of the “88” generation studentgroup stopped manufacturing rumours andexaggerated news stories in complicity withinternal and external anti-government elements andforeign media, levelling groundless accusations todestroy the people’s admiration for the government, committing terrorist acts, and inciting mass proteststo jeopardize stability and peace of the State.Otherwise, they will get punitive punishmentimposed by the people soon. I think the punishmentto be inflicted by the people on them may be muchmore severe than legal action they will face ifthey continue to commit such acts, and they evenmay meet their end. I wish so-called students wouldaccept my advice.

Study finds some parents pass pain totheir teenagers

Although migraineheadaches are thought tobe inherited, the degree ofassociated pain varieswidely among individuals. The scientists whoheaded up the new researchsuggest some of thevariability is becauseteens model their par-ents’responses to their ownpain.“We want to knowhow much of a child’sresponse to migraine painis learned and how much ishereditary,” said lead authorAnn Pakalnis, a neurologist

The researcherssurveyed 20 teens,12 to17 years old, who sufferedfrom one to 15 migraineseach month, as well astheir parents. More than90 percent of parentsin the study reportedat least one chronic-paincondition, including mi-graines and fibromyalgia, which is characterized bywide-spread pain in a

These experts used tobe paid dearly, but unableto contribute originalinitiative to the kingdom,he told a symposiumabout the partnershipbetween the governmentand the Asian Develop-

They should have shamefor these affairs,” he said.

When donor countriesprovide technical assis-tance to Cambodia, theyrequest the governmentto hire foreign experts athigh expences (to carryout relevant projects),thus collecting theirmoney back and makingCambodia receivenothing, he said.

Some consultants juststay at five-star hotels, hireCambodian students to

conduct survey for them, compose their reports onbasis of the survey andfinally tell the govern-ment that this is theirachievement, said thePremier.

“They steal Cambodianinitiatives...This is acorruption of intellectualproperty rights,” he said, adding that this should bechanged.

Cambodia also needs tostrengthen its capacity tofinish such projects withits own national staff, hesaid. —MNA/Xinhua

Lincoln letter on Gettysburgfound at US archives

WASHINGTON, 9 June —An optimistic two-sen-tence note that AbrahamLincoln penned to his topgeneral after the CivilWar's decisive battle wasunveiled on Thursday atthe National Archiveswhere it was undetectedfor nearly 70 years.

The note from Lincolnto Major-General HenryHalleck was written on 7July , 1863, four days afterthe defeat of ConfederateGeneral Robert E Lee atGettysburg, Pennsylvania, and three days after thecity of Vicksburg on the

Mississippi River fell toUnion forces.

A misspelling showedthe rudimentary educa-tion of the 16th USPresident, who waslargely self-taught.

The brief missive toHalleck, the commandinggeneral of the UnionArmy, remarked on thetwo major victories aftera series of crushing Unionlosses in the four-year warfought to prevent the then-fledgling union fromsplitting apart. Lincolnhad repeatedly replacedhis generals for failing to

be aggressive enough. General George Meade,

who led Union forces atGettysburg, had takencontrol of Lincoln’s Armyof the Potomac just a weekbefore the battle, which cameto be seen as the turningpoint of the Civil War.

The note was found threeweeks ago at the archivesamong docu-ments longopen to researchers and wasknown to have existedbecause Halleck cited it in atelegram, said archivistTrevor Plante, the Civil Warspecialist who found it.
