Ashe Senior Center Mission Statement
The mission of the Ashe County Senior Center is to provide services, activities, so-
cialization and intergenerational opportunities to older adults of Ashe County that
enhance their dignity and help them maintain their independence at home.
Vision Statement
To foster community power by mobilizing the strengths and resources of seniors
and community leaders in a community empowered to welcome life's opportunities
for seniors. It is believed that the needs of older adults can best be met by the ef-
forts of interested public and private citizens working together toward this goal.
Therefore, it shall be the philosophy of this organization that the needs of older
adults, are to be found, recognized and reviewed and that every effort shall be
made to promote health and well being within the means and abilities available
thorough the senior center.
The Senior Center is Closed until Further
Notice and All Activities and
Special Events are Subject to Change
A Note From The Senior Center Director—Ashe Services for Aging
continues to be committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of all those in
our community including those who use our services, participate at the senior
center and those who work for us. Since our target population is most nega-
tively impacted by COVID-19, we are taking all reasonable precautions to
limit exposures while still caring for people in our community.
We are keeping up with the most recent information regarding the COVID-19
as it is presented. At this time the Ashe Senior Center will remain closed until
we are advised that it is safe to reopen. This includes the exercise room and
all scheduled activities.
For those of you who have scheduled appointments for our VITA Tax Aide
Program, we are reaching out to you to let you know that when we reopen, we
will call you to reschedule that appointment. We also want to let you know
that the IRS has extended the deadline for filing taxes until July 15th.
If you have Medicare needs, please feel free to call us so we can try to take
care of your needs by phone. We also want to let you know that we are receiv-
ing information from the NC Department of Insurance about scams that are
taking place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Scammers are targeting
older adults and those with serious long term health conditions. Fraudsters
are attempting to bill Medicare for sham tests or treatments related to the
coronavirus and are targeting individuals to illegally obtain money or Medi-
care numbers. Please remember to never give your Medicare to anyone other
than your doctor or other health care providers. Never give your Medicare
number to anyone who contacts you via phone call, texts or emails. Be cau-
tious of anyone who comes to your door offering free coronavirus testing,
treatment, or supplies. Ignore online offers for vaccinations….this is a scam.
If you have an immediate need for food or other supplies, please reach out to
us. We also want to let you know that we truly miss you and we can’t wait un-
til we can safely reopen the senior center.
Wondering What You Can Do to Help?
Ashe Services for Aging, Inc, has started Project Connect, a way for the community to help each other combat social isolation and keep active.
Below are some specific ways you can help connect with our residents and clients during this time of social isolation. For questions or more
information, call Bevin South at 336-246-2461. Items can be mailed or delivered to Ashe Services for Aging, 180 Chattyrob Lane, West Jeffer-
son, NC 28640.
Write Letters—Write Letters of encouragement, pick out and send greeting cards or give it your own personal touch and make a card your-
self. Send a picture of your and your family. We can help our residents and clients send you something back too!
Outside Décor—Make or buy birdhouses for the residents or clients to enjoy outside their windows. Support our local business by buying
lawn ornaments that can also be enjoyed when looking out their windows.
Artwork—Have your children draw pictures, paint, or make other crafts for residents and clients to enjoy. We love adult artwork too, so be
sure to share your artistic talent as well.
Send Videos—Send videos encouraging messages, scripture, or stories. You might also send videos of special talents such as playing in-
struments, singing, gymnastics, dance, or playing sports. Videos may be sent via text to 336-620-2091 or by email to bev-
Flowers—Send flowers for residents or clients to enjoy inside and brighten up their room or home. Flowers may be delivered to 180 Chat-
tyrob Lane, West Jefferson, NC and staff will deliver to the residents and clients.
Special Treats—Consider helping out our local businesses and providing a special treat for residents and clients at the same time! Some
ideas include milkshakes, ice cream, donuts, fresh fruit and veggie trays, pastries, etc. This is a great way to support local businesses!
Supporting Businesses– Here are other specific ways that you can help support our local business as well as well as our frontline staff and
have it delivered. For our in-home aide staff, consider sponsoring a cook-free night by sending gift certificates or gift cards to local restau-
rants providing take out. If you want to do something more simple, consider sponsoring just a special snack/treat instead of meals.

Virtual Dementia Tour
The truth is that when dementia strikes, it strikes the whole community, not just the individual. Thanks
to the Virtual Dementia Tour, health care professionals, family caregivers, business leaders, first re-
sponders and educators are experiencing for themselves the physical and mental challenges facing peo-
ple with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
The Virtual Dementia Tour—a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of de-
mentia through the use of patented sensory tools and instruction— is Your Window into Their World.
During a Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitators guide participants outfitted with pa-
tented devices that alter their senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks.
Call today for an appointment! LIMITED TO FIRST 24 PARTICIPANTS.
Caldwell Hospice is excited to offer the Virtual Dementia Tour to our community. Participants are led
through the approximately 45-minute experience in 10-minute intervals and only need to be present for
their appointment time.
Take the tour on April 27, 2020 from 1-3 pm at Ashe Services for Aging, 180
Chattyrob Lane, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

SHIIP INFORMATION
The Road to Medicare
It is very important for everyone becoming eligible for
Medicare to get accurate information about coverage
and delivery options, including supplemental health in-
surance, Medicare health plans and prescription drug
coverage. Attention to these issues will help you avoid
serious and costly problems later.
The Senior’s Health Insurance Information Program
(SHIIP) provides FREE, unbiased information about
Medicare and other insurance related issues, and the
Senior Center has SHIIP volunteers to help you navigate
the world of Medicare.
SHIIP has created a handout “The Road to Medicare:
Planning Your Drive Toward 65.” It outlines the deci-
sions you’ll need to make and what options are available
through the Medicare System.
The Road to Medicare handout includes the following:
Caution: Slippery Road Ahead - Ways to Prepare for
Medicare
Green Light: Enrollment - When and how you need
to enroll in Medicare
Detour: Working Past 65 - Information for beneficiar-
ies who plan to work beyond age 65
Which Way to Supplemental Coverage? - Choices in
health insurance to supplemental Medicare
Stop: Get Help - Resources for further information
and assistance on the road to Medicare
Please don’t wait to make your Medicare decisions.
Please contact Ashe Services for Aging/Senior Center
and speak with a certified SHIIP Volunteer Counselor to
discuss your Medicare options. To arrange an appoint-
ment with a SHIIP Volunteer Counselor, contact the
Senior Center at 336-246-4347.
