• Threatening acts or words and violent actions will not be tolerated at the University, and such behavior is prohibited.

• Violent behavior includes any behavior, whether intentional or reckless, which results in bodily injury to one’s self, another person and/or damage to property.

• Threatening behavior includes any behavior, whether intentional or reckless, that by its nature would be interpreted by a reasonable person as an intent to harm one’s self, another person or damage property belonging to another. Threats may be oral, written, or communicated through conventional mail, electronic, fax, or telephonic means and may be direct or implied.

• Physically assaulting a person, including slapping, hitting, punching, pushing, poking or kicking;

• Intimidating, threatening, hostile or abusive language that communicates the intention to engage in violence against another person and leads a reasonable person to expect that violent behavior may occur.

• More examples are in the policy in the Revised Handbook of Operating Procedures.

• Before committing or threatening an act of violence, many individual display warning signs.

• The more warning signs present, the greater the risk of violence.






• Previous physical aggression• Verbal or written threats• Unreasonably argumentative and/or overly

suspicious– talk about ‘revenge’

• Alarming decline in personal grooming• Grandiosity– always has to be right– overestimates their value






• Delusion– believes wild conspiracy theories,– makes highly unbelievable statements– repeatedly sees accidents and mistakes of others

as intentional and aimed at him/her• Extremist opinions– rigidly intolerant of other points of view

Use of alcohol and illegal drugsSome instances of what’s okay

Alcohol is permitted at official functions approved by the President or his or her delegate.

Prescription and over-the-counter medications should be used as prescribed by a physician.

Supervisors should counsel with an employee under the influence on the job.





Use of alcohol and illegal drugsWhat’s not okay

• Possessing, using, or selling illegal drugs on U.T. premises, property, or vehicles.

• The unauthorized use or possession of alcohol while on duty or in U.T. vehicles.

• Use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or controlled substance while not on duty which adversely affects job performance or others.

• These and other actions can result in disciplinary action, including dismissal.





Weapons and the workplaceThe policy

• U.T. Austin prohibits the display of weapons and other objects in a threatening manner, and the use of weapons or ordinary objects used as weapons to harm someone.

• ROTC, commissioned law enforcement officers including UTPD, and lawfully armed security guards, are the only people authorized to have firearms on UT Austin premises.
