Rainforests: what can be done?Rainforest land has always been used. Large populations of early native peoples farmed

it but they were able to look after the land in such a way that the environment was not

destroyed. They worked it in a sustainable way.

☞ What are some of the solutions to the present problems? Read what these people

have to say.

Activity sheet – Deforestation

We need to use the land

already farmed in a better

way. Poor farmers should

be taught how to farm the

land well.

Let the farmers have the

land for a certain length of

time. They can make a small

deposit, which is returned if

the land is looked after.

Rich companies should

be controlled by the law

and ranchers should

not be allowed to grab

forestland.

We need to pay

farmers to look

after the forest.

We need to protect

farmers to help them

stay in the same place.

Rainforests must

be protected. There

should be more

national parks.

Talk about

1. Why is it hard for poor farmers to farm the land well?

2. The rainforest people also farm the land. In what important way would it be

different?

3. In what way do you think rich countries could help save the rainforest? Think of

more than one way.

4. Which solutions do you think are the most important? Put them in order of 1-6.

Geography Sustainable development36 © Folens (copiable page)

Why are rainforests important?Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a ‘greenhouse gas’. One reason why rainforests are important is

because they take in a great deal of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Resource sheet – Deforestation

● Chlorophyll is the green part of the leaf

● Chlorophyll catches energy from the sun

● This energy, along with carbon dioxide (CO2) and water makes plant ‘food’

● Oxygen is given off

● Rainforests take in huge amounts of carbon dioxide because there are so many trees

Word bank

deforestation (the large-scale cutting down of trees)

photosynthesis (process by which green plants use energy from the

sun, CO2 and water to make ‘food’ for the plant)

Carbon dioxide is taken in.

Oxygen is

given out.

Water is taken in by the

Buttress Roots.
