Seminole State College Collegian Seminole, Oklahoma • Volume 36 • Number 8 • May 2008 Three Inducted into Seminole State Alumni Hall of Fame The Seminole State College Educational Foundation held its annual recognition banquet May 1, which included recognition of outstanding college alumni, students and staff. Three former students were inducted into the Seminole State College Alumni Hall of Fame. Inductees included air traffic controller supervisor Ray Alford of Fort Worth; Mike Langley, vice president of Langley Management in Shawnee; and Paige Sheffield, with Patterson Oil Company of Wewoka. G.RayAlfordgraduatedfrom Wewoka High School and attended then Seminole Junior College from 1982 to 1984. He was a member of the 1983 NJCAA championship runner-up basketball team and the All-Conference team in 1984. Alford attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a part of the 1987 Big Eight All-Conference team. He obtained his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering that same year. Alford began his career in aviation twenty years ago, serving as an air traffic control specialist at Houston Air Traffic Control Facility. He has also served as an FAA instructor at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City. He later became an air traffic control specialist at Fort Worth Air Traffic Control Facility and served in that position until 2004 when he was selected as front line manager of the facility. Alford is member of the National Society of Black Engineers, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, and the Federal Managers Association. Alford has a daughter, Ashley, son-in-law Zachary, and a grandson, Zane. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Alford Sr., live in Wewoka. Langley graduated from Wewoka High School and received his associate degree from the College in 1979. Langley serves as vice president of Langley Management Co., which has been in business for more than 30 years. Langley Management Co. manages finance companies in six states and real estate throughout Oklahoma. Langley also serves as president of Courtesy Loans, Inc. He is active in the Shawnee community. He serves on Arvest Bank board of directors, the YMCA board, Shawnee Airport Advisory Board and the Unity Health Foundation board. SeminoleStateCollegeandRural Enterprises of Oklahoma(REI) were among 19 educationand business partnerships honoredduring an Economic DevelopmentPartnership Recognition programheldApril20. TheEconomicDevelopmentPartnership Recognition honorsoutstanding partnerships thatlead to significant contributions in furthering the education ofOklahoma’sworkforce. Through the jointeffortsofSeminoleStateCollegeandREI,a

RuralBusinessandResourcesCenterwas established on SSC’s campusin 2005. The center has providedassistancetonumerousindividuals,businesses,chambersofcommerce,economicdevelopmentgroups andcityorganizationswithinSeminole,Pottawatomie, Lincoln, Okfuskee,andHughescounties. This partnership helpedsupporteffortstoprovideanewhomefor the local Workforce Oklahomaand Oklahoma EmploymentSecurities offices in the downtown Seminolearea,aswellasrefurbish

aformergrocerystoretoserveasanincubatorforacallcenteroperationrecruitedtoSeminole. Seminole State Collegeand REI have hosted severaleconomic development seminarsthathavebeenattendedbycivicandcommunityleadersfromwithinthecollege’sservicearea. Thetwoorganizationshavealso worked together in visitingwith members of the OklahomaCongressional delegation inWashingtonD.C. to solicit supportforeconomicdevelopment in ruralsoutheastandcentralOklahoma. “The partnership betweenRuralEnterprisesofOklahomaandSeminole State College has beenextremely beneficial to communities in the College’s service area andto numerous individuals seekingto establish or grow businesses inOklahoma. SSC Social Scienceinstructor Marta Osby and studentSarah Rooney were among thenearly 4,000 Phi Theta Kappa(PTK) InternationalHonorSocietymembers,advisorsandconstituentsatthe90thInternationalConventionheldinPhiladelphia. Osby,co-sponsoroftheSSCchapter of PTK and Rooney spentApril3-5gatheringinformationandfellowshipping with fellow PTKstudentsandsupportersfromacrosstheworld.PTKis theinternationalhonorsocietyoftwo-yearcolleges.Thegroup’sinternationalconferenceisthelargestgatheringofcommunitycollegehonorstudents.

This year’s conference,themed“ImagineaWorld,”featuredkeynote presentations by CNNcorrespondentChristianeAmanpour,former State Department official JamesRubinandpoliticalcolumnistGeorgeWill.Rooney said shewasmostimpressedbythepresentationbyAmyTan,writerofThe Joy Luck Club. Attendeesalsoheardreportson the impact of their communityserviceinitiativesacrossthecounty,elected international officers and awarded service and academicawards.Rooneywasnominatedas“Distinguished Chapter Member”for both regional and international

awards. “This was my first time attending a Phi ThetaKappa conference - regional orinternational.Itisveryencouragingtoseesomanypeoplefromacrossthe county and hear the impactthat our programs have across theworld.IamthankfulforthesupportthatwehaveatSSCandallthathasbeendonetomakePhiThetaKappanotonly agreathonor society,buta true community service group,’”saidRooney. Rooney, a sophomore fromShawnee, is the mother of threeyoungchildren.Sheisthedaughterof Michael and Celia Rooney ofPhiladelphia,Pa.Shehasservedasstudent government representativefor theAlphaThetaNuChapterofthe Phi Theta Kappa InternationalHonor Society and has beenrecognized as a Neil MolleurScholarandaGeorgeNighScholar.Rooneywasalsonamedtothe2008All-OklahomaAcademic Team forthestate’scommunitycollegesandtechnicalbranches. After graduating fromSSC in May with her associate’sin behavioral science, she plans totransfertoWestChesterUniversityin West Chester, Pa. and pursuea bachelor’s in the same major.Rooney plans to work in domesticviolencerehabilitation.

Donahorepresentedregentsof small colleges at a spotlightsession at the AACC convention.The session entitled, “TheMinority CEO: A Conversationabout Diversity, Leadership andNavigating the Pipeline,” outlinedmethods to challenge the statusquo in developing a pipeline foryoung people to gain leadershipexperiences. Thesessionwasanextensionofaconversationfromtheprevious

year’sconferenceregardingdiversitywithincommunitycolleges. She is a member and pastpresidentoftheSeminoleChamberof Commerce and was namedSeminole’s“CitizenoftheYear”for2002. Donahohasbeennominatedtheretimesas“WomanoftheYear”as recognized by the OklahomaJournalRecordnewspaper. A long-time public schooleducator,DonahoholdsaBachelorofArts degree fromArizona StateUniversity and has a master’s inLiberal Studies/AdministrativeLeadership from the University ofOklahoma.

Seminole State College’sPoliceDepartmenthasbeenselectedtoreceivesomenewequipmentandspecialtrainingtohelpbetterequipagencies to fight crime. ThankstotheOklahomaLawEnforcement Exchange program(OKLEX),startedbytheOklahomaStateBureauofInvestigation(OSBI),approximately 260 agencies havebeenequippedwithanewpersonalcomputerandaccessories,andwillhaveaccesstoanewportalthatwillmake researching information andcommunications to other agencieseasier.` The OKLEX programstarted four years ago with anequipmentneedssurvey.AbouttwoyearsagoOSBIwasabletoprovidethose agencies with computers. Inadditiontothecomputers,agencieswerealsogivendigitalcamerasandphotographprintingstations.

Thenextstepwastoprovideagencies with access to a specialportal that connects various lawenforcement agencies in the stateto an index.This index is updatedperiodically to permit local lawenforcement agencies to searchfor people of interest or sites ofinterest from one specific location on the Internet—rather than goingto multiple Internet sites. Trainingfor use of the portal began in lateJanuary. The program has access tothefollowingstateagencies:1. Alcohol and Beverage LawEnforcement - licensing data onalcoholsales.2.DepartmentofCorrections-sexoffenderandcrimealertdata3. Department of Public Safety -impoundandcollisioninformation4.OklahomaBureauofInvestigation- criminal history, concealed

weaponsinformation,Stateincidentbased reporting system, vehicleregistration and other relatedinformation. Theprogram’sgoalistohavealllawenforcementtocommunicatewithoneanotherandstateagencieswithouthavingtomakeabunchofphonecallsandtobeabletoaccessinformation shared from otheragencies. SSC Campus PoliceDepartmentCoordinatorDanFactorattended the first training seminar heldontheuseoftheOKLEXportal.Factorexplainedthattheportalwillbehelpfultocampuspolice. “This new system is inaddition to the Oklahoma LawEnforcement TelecommunicationsSystem, (OLETS), which iscurrently used by all local LawEnforcement. The agencies withOKLEX will not have to use theOLETS terminal every time theyneed to do a background on asuspect.EXAMPLE:IftheyneedtodoanOSBIbackgroundonaperson,they will be able to go directly toOSBIthemselveswithouthavingtoinvolveanotheragencyandwithoutinvolving the OLETS Operator.Theportalprovidesaccesstoothersitesandmakesitsimpletoconnectwith other agencies. It really is atime saver and makes checkingsomeone’s background simple.‘We are very fortunate to be oneof the entities selected to receivethis equipment and training,” saidFactor. Any Oklahoma Sheriff’soffice or police department can havetheiremployeestrainedtouseOKLEX. It does not require youragencytohavereceivedanOKLEXPCtoparticipate.Eachindividual

fewweeksago,theCollegeinstalledanewsirenwarningsystemtohelpnotifythecampusintheeventofanemergency.Additionally,FactorsaidthattheSSCPoliceDepartmenthasbeenworkingcloselywithlocallawenforcement agencies and helpingthemtobefamiliarwithallfacilitiesatSSC,intheeventthattheywouldneed to come to the campus as

backupsupport. A few weeks ago, severalarea police officers did a campus walk-thoughwithFactor.“We have a great relationshipwith our surrounding enforcementagencies. We know that it isimportantthattheyareawareofthelayoutofourcampusandhavesomepointsofcontacthere, should theyneedtohelpusout,”saidFactor.
