When giving a seminar presentation it is important toorganize the information into a clear and logical order. We

have various options for structuring the presentation:

    in chronological sequence

from most important to least important from general to particular

Using familiar information structures like these helps to

    make a presentation listener-friendly.

One way of marking the talks sections and

subsections is to use what are called signposts.

As the name suggests, these are words andphrases that tell the listeners where you are in the

presentation, where you are taking them next and

where they have just been. Some examples are

    given below:

I intend to divide this talk into parts: a, b, c, and d. The way I am going to present my paper is bygrouping a and b together and then giving several

examples. I propose to present my paper in several stages:firstly, a review of a, then an attack on b, andfinally an analysis of c.

    GETTING CLARIFICATION

When using a foreign language, we have to get usedto dealing with situations where we do notunderstand, or only partly understand, what thespeaker has said. In a seminar, where time may beshort, it is important to make it clear to the speakerprecisely what your problem is. If you ask a very

general question you may find that the speakersimply produces a repetition of what they saidbefore.
