Working on my final project, which is a course syllabus, I discovered that it doesn’t only help the teacher to present an organized course to students, but it also helps students see what and how they are expected to perform in the course.

I learned that developing a syllabus can be difficult due to all the information, policies, assignments, exams, grading and many other things that need to be explained.

I learned that creating a course schedule is more than just putting all of the topics you plan to cover into a sequence; rather, it takes considerable planning to decide on appropriate order, segues, flow, the amount of time concepts will take, etc.

I learned that it might be hard to plan a course syllabus, but it’s harder to implement it; so we should remember to plan what we can actually teach or implement.

The most important thing I learned was that prepping a course can range from fairly little effort (e.g. slapping a syllabus together and hoping it all works out on the fly) to a lot (e.g., prepping each aspect- assignments, discussions, etc.- and being prepared to make rolling changes), and that a lot of initial effort is better in the long run, improving both teaching and learning and decreasing the time spent correcting mistakes later on.

I learned to write measurable student learning objectives as well as to keep the balance between the theory and practice in an English language methodology course.

The most important thing I learned was the importance of flow of information, setting class up in such a way that the learning and understanding grows as more knowledge is shared.

Course Planning

I have learned that planning a course is a very challenging task where every part is related to the other, specifically learning objectives and how to assess them and how to teach to achieve those goals.

When I started dividing the lectures (setting the schedule) I realized how the limitations can affect my plan for reaching my learning objectives.

I learned that there is a big difference between knowing better ways of doing things and actually putting that knowledge into practice.

I learned that some of the most important things in teaching are knowing my students very well, finding the right learning outcomes, time management, organizing and respecting my students, being fair, clear and firm.

Lessons are not always as clear and straightforward to the students as they are to the teacher; sometimes you have to teach more basic skills for the students to understand another concept.

Preparing materials for online learning requires thinking “outside the box” and putting yourself in your students’ situation to ensure that assignments are manageable and effective.

The one important thing I learned was how willing students were to volunteer to help a class improve and take responsibility on themselves, yet some students will not even do assignments; in fact all the volunteers did not necessarily have the best grades, nor did they ask for special treatment.

Every class we teach is mixed ability, interest, proficiency, and personality; we cannot direct the wind, but we can lead the sails by taking into account the benefits/advantages and getting familiar with strategies and techniques to deal with it productively and effectively.
