When I am asked, “What’s new?” at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, I usually respond, “Do you have an hour?” There are so many wonderful new classes, workshops and special events at our center each week, you can easily miss something. I would like to make sure that does not happen.
Highlights of this Winter-Spring Semester include: the return of the Mountainfilm on Tour Film Festival, the annual Art Takeover downtown and performances like Kenny Brawner in Ray Charles on My Mind, LaBoheme and Presidio Brass. Don’t miss the annual Artist Guild exhibition, the Community Chorus’ Music to Remember or the Community Theatre’s Shrek: The Musical.
The new year is the perfect time to consider taking a class, auditioning for a play, coming to an art exhibit opening, watching a performance, joining an arts group or becoming a volunteer at the center. Make a new year’s resolution now to be part of the arts in our community.
Sincerely,Tim Chapman, Superintendent of Arts
We would like to thank the following organizations for supportingthe Carrollton Center for the Arts throughout the year.
On the front coverBeloved artist, Tom Nielsen was born in Clinton, Iowa. He was a painter for five decades. Beginning with lessons and encouragement by his grandmother, he began working with pastels at an early age and was oil painting by 10. He is largely self-studied, devoting much attention to the disciplines and methods of artists he admires past and present. A realist at heart, his paintings reflect his love of marine and landscape paintings by artists from the golden age of traditional painting. Tom’s childhood was filled with adventure on the backwaters of the Mississippi River. Nielsen joined the Navy after high school. After serving in the Vietnam War, he returned to his home town where he established his first studio aboard a houseboat. He later moved to the Washington, D.C., area where he divided his time between graphic design and painting. Portraits dominated his career at first, but he longed to paint landscapes and seascapes as well and gradually found a balance between the two. Marine subjects, whether inland rivers, coastal marshes or thundering surf, have become the focus of his recent work. In 2004, his coastal paintings of the Marshes of Glynn were given by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to each of the world leaders attending the G8 Sea Island Summit. In 2012, he was elected as a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists. His painting, Into The Night - The USS Constitution, traveled nationally as part of the society’s 1812 Star-Spangled Nation exhibition. His harbor scene, North Shore, was juried into the society’s 16th Annual National Exhibition. His seascape, Atlantic Rhythm, won a place in the 35th Annual Mystic Seaport International Marine Art Exhibition. Recently, Mr. Nielsen passed away in Carrollton, and even though he will be missed, his legacy will live on and his memory and contributions to the art scene in Carrollton will never be forgotten.

The Recreational Track is for dancers who also enjoy dance as a leisure activity or that are being introduced to dance for the first time.

This training, rooted in Russian technique and the Vaganova Method of ballet, requires multiple sessions per week. Dancers are introduced and trained in specialty classes, such as: Pre-Pointe, Pointe and Character Dance. Evaluation by Artistic Director Jurijs Safonovs, is required to join the Academy Track.
