Agenda Items

1. Fresher’s Booklet – everyone needs to begin writing their short paragraph for the fresher’s booklet and choosing a picture – Will is going to be in touch with the Law School to find out when Fresher’s packs are going out and will be in contact with everyone with a deadline to get these in.

2. Ex President – Emma has spoken to an older President of LawSoc about some of the things his company can offer – these include city breaks and Ibiza

invasions – not hundred percent on whether he can actually provide everything he offers so this will be considered later.

3. Cricket Social – it has been decided the Staff/Student Cricket social will be held on 3rd June at Weetwood – Stu is going to get in contact with Geoff Boycott about possibly umpiring.

4. E-mails – new emails have now been paid for – Neil and Will have been dealing with these and we should all have our official committee emails in the next few days. These will then need to be used for all committee business. There will be a separate email address for the book sale and two remaining for first year reps when they are elected.

5. Business Cards – organize business cards for those attending sponsorship meetings.

6. Newquay – as well as the usual alcohol provided by LawSoc for Newquay, Cat has arranged an actual social in Newquay as well – this will include either a £1000 or £1500 bar tab. If everyone can be pushing Newquay through Facebook etc. to get more people signed on that would be useful.

7. Hoodies – in September everyone will receive a hoody and t-shirt. Laura will be ordering these in June and will be emailing everyone for sizes and name preferences nearer the time. Agreed on one colour for committee hoodies and a choice of two colours for the other hoodies – some discussion about colours, possibly blue for committee and grey and green for the normal hoodies – still need to confirm.

8. Budgets – Neil will be emailing people soon with a budget proposal form – these need to be filled out and returned to Neil so he knows how much people are going to need for the things they have planned – instructions will come with the form – any issues contact Neil.

9. Fresher’s Social – some discussion as to where to hold the Fresher’s Social – possibly keeping it at Chili Whites, also suggested the Faversham – Cat will check to see if there are any other possibilities and then decide where to hold it.

10. Book Sale – Neil has organized with the Law School a facility on the VLE to use for sorting books – third years will soon be able to bring their books in and fill out the online form to get those sold. Still need to organize a room for books to be stored.

11. Sports Tour – discussion of a possible sports tour abroad for in the Easter holdings. This would need some kind of sponsor (perhaps DLA – Harry is going to come up with a proposal for the DLA Piper sponsorship meeting on the 3rd June). This needs to be booked by December.

12. Sports Kits – Harry is dealing with team kits for male sports – anything spent by captains incorrectly will not be refunded by the society.

13. Law Ball – theme for Law Ball discussed – possible under water theme – venue possibly Town Hall.

Page 3: Semester 1 - Minutes

14. Amsterdam – Sophie is going to aim to book Amsterdam as soon as possible so it can be incorporated in the Fresher’s Booklet – (June/July).

Next Meeting

TBA – weekend before freshers – generally a get together for food to finalize fresher’s week arrangements – will be confirmed over summer. (Possibly Sunday

18th September).

• Proposal to compose a weekly newsletter to send through different platforms to ensure all LawSoc members are kept informed of events – this could be sent through Facebook, the LawSoc website and through emails.

Competition Showcase

• Unfortunately the competition showcase clashes with the sports trials on Wednesday 28th September – it has been arranged that the more pressing event is the sports trials. Harry and Jess has made those aware who want to attend both to attend the sports trials and that it will still be possible to see it (Will is going to record the showcase) the showcase and to sign up.

Page 6: Semester 1 - Minutes

• The showcase will start at 4:15 on Wednesday 28th. Equality

• Curry Night – provisional date Thursday 3rd November at Akmals in Hyde Park. Careers

• As many of the committee members as possible need to attend the careers events to ensure there is a good number at the events for our sponsors.

• All dates are publicized on Facebook. • Sean will go through the sponsorship which each firm has given at the meeting

prior to the careers events so members of the committee can be informed while talking to the law firms.

• Important dates: o Careers Dinner: Wednesday 9th November – Queens Hotel o Careers Fair – Monday 7th November – Tuesday 8th November –

Parkinson Building o DLA Piper Quiz: Monday 28th November – Chili Whites

Sports

• Sports Nights out – Wednesday 28th September – after the trials to Yates and O2.

• Open for everyone. Excursions

• Discussions around excursions for next year weren’t productive. • The viability of a Tour and Ibiza will be discussed at further committee meetings

and a decision will be made by October 17th. Bar Careers

• Two Inn’s of Court won’t be in contact until January. • Train tickets proven to be an issue last year, Iain suggesting possibly using some

of his budget to subsidise train fairs. • Potentially going to have a Judge to decide the Mooting final. • Potentially going to have Baroness Hale to Leeds for a talk. • Bar Careers needs to be promoted heavily this year.

Pro Bono

• Street Law Training on the same day as the careers dinner, this shouldn’t be a problem because the training will finish at 5 whereas the careers dinner isn’t going to be until 7.30.
