Happy 2012! Beginning a new year is a great time for reflection...for reviewing what happened during the previous year and for looking forward to what lies ahead. During 2011, we hat lots of interesting events to remember and to pull from as we interact with our clients/customers/students and with our peers and colleagues. As part of the May mini-conference, Heather Coleman-Voss and Ron Marshall gave us some fun, but important information on how we can use social media to network with others. We also benefitted from hearing how a panel made up of professionals including recruiters, independent contractors, faith-based initiative workers, tempo- rary agencies, and Michigan Works! Agencies use social media to find and retain employees and market their services/products. May also brought us a new Presi- dent-Elect (Elaine I. Neale) and Secretary (Nikki Pearson) and a revised bylaws and constitution. In August, Heather Coleman-Voss and Ron Marshall joined us for a hands on ses- sion on LinkedIn and we introduced online book studies. October brought with it Halloween and a fun, interactive session with Ron Marshall on Twitter. Most recently, we completed a well-received mini-conference on December 2. Kimberly Kassner gave an excellent keynote presentation on how to communicate more effectively with our clients/customers/students using questioning and active listening. Cathy McCafferty Smith followed up with an outstanding session on how to use a series of reflective questions to help our clients/customers/students with the process of self awareness, career exploration, decision making, and goal setting. Looking forward to 2012, we have some wonderful and exciting events and oppor- tunities to share resources in the preparation stages. Stay tuned because we will want to seek your input in order to provide you with information that will be most helpful to you. We will also see a number of changes in the upcoming year. My tenure as your president ended December 31. I have been honored to have had the opportunity to serve you and have enjoyed being able to meet and get to know a number of you over the past year. Elaine Neale will be stepping forward as your President for 2012 and Nikki Pearson will continue to serve as your Secretary. I am confident that they have a heart for and will do an outstanding job making sure the associa- tion moves forward true to its mission of providing professional development, re- sources, and networking opportunities for career development professionals. Best wishes for a wonderful 2012! PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSION

“TWITTER” THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27-WRAP-UP

By: Nikki T. Pearson

Hello All!

Due to popular demand, we co-

ordinated another hands-on

technology session with the al-

ways entertaining Heather Cole-

man-Voss and Ron Marshall of

the Ferndale Career Center to

explore the current phenomenon

called “Twitter.” This free pro-

fessional development session

offered 2.5 CEUs and great

“info-tainment” was had by all!

Though Heather was ill, Ron

Marshall held down the fort

and worked us through the

basics of Twitter. Along with

other items, we examined:

How to establish a Twitter

account.

What ways to use symbols

efficiently for the 140-

character limitation

Using Twitter to reach particu-

lar audiences.

In the spirit of Halloween, your

dedicated SEMCDFA board

members as well as an enthusi-

astic member, Laura Robb, did

dress up and added some

“spooktacular visuals to the

event. Overall, the Twitter ses-

sion was received well, the only

thing missing was YOU!

We ended the year on a

high note at the Fall/

Winter Conference on De-

cember 2, 2011. The

beautiful facility at the

Macomb Community Col-

lege Center Campus in

Clinton Township en-

hanced our holiday cele-

bration as we welcomed

two outstanding speakers.

Our keynote speaker,

Kimberly Kassner gave a

fun and interactive presen-

tation on “communicating

effectively with clients/

students using questions

and active listening.” We

all learned more about ef-

fective communication dur-

ing the bread and peanut

butter demonstration!

Cathy Smith gave us more

great information with her

presentation on quick infor-

mal assessments espe-

cially when we do not have

a lot of time.

We were even surprised at

our unexpected guest, a

deer that appeared right

outside the beautiful

make. Just like the snow-

flakes, we are no two alike

and our results are the

best when we unite. To-

gether we can make a dif-

ference!”

A membership meeting

was held before the confer-

ence and the board would

like to thank the few mem-

bers who did attend. We

are hoping to have greater

representation at future

memberships meetings.

This is your association

and we need your input!!!

windows to listen to these

awesome presentations.

A definite sign that Santa

was nearby too!

A delicious lunch was en-

joyed by all followed by a

gift box of homemade tof-

fee for all attendees.

SEMCDFA Members were

also given a special gift, a

beautiful snowflake note-

pad with a special

poem...One of a Kind...

“ As they float to the earth,

each unique tiny flake has

no idea the impact it will

“Quick, fun, informal as-

sessments (ie questions)-

she reframed what assess-

ments can be (insightful)”

“Enthusiasm, and

energy of speaker,

very knowledgeable.”

“The red stick is

something I can use

in communication. It

is easy to forget what

a symbol can be.”

“Love the energy of the

presenter. Great group

interaction, made it fun

and interesting.”

Audit Report November 30, 2011

Prepared by Denise Y. Thornton and Linda Flynn

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 2012 FISCAL YEAR The person who makes the deposits should be different from the person who writes the checks. Due to security concerns, do not make copies of checks. Receipts contain essential information. The person who writes the checks should not receive the statements. Per the constitution and bylaws, the treasurer presents a treasurer’s report at quarterly meetings and audit shall occur on an annual basis. If there is not a treasurer, however, it is recommended that a semi-annual audit take place. A check requisition should be prepared for each check written for expen-ditures. Investigate the issuance of a debit card.
